(A)

When you leave home to go and live somewhere else, you naturally take your own personality and cultural ways with you. When you arrive in a new country with a different culture you can experience a wide variety of feelings and reactions. For example, you may feel confused and nervous, and like to depend on others.

If you do experience these things, then you are probably experiencing culture shock. For example, coming to Australia from another country certainly gives you a chance to face many new things: the buildings look different, and the food is not what you are used to. You may not be able to speak with other people confidently.

Learning to function effectively in a new culture is not easy. Meanings in cross-cultural situations are often unclear. This can be stressful because you are not sure what others expect of you or what you can expect of them. In these situations it is natural to feel anxious and frustrated(挫折). If you recognize that these feelings are a normal part of the experience of living away from “home”, you may be able to deal with them more efficiently(高效地). Your sense of humor and openness will also help. As you gain greater understanding of the new culture, you can expect the stress to disappear.

Coping with culture shock needs a special effort, but it is the most important to remember that you are not alone in your feelings of distress. Most people in their first weeks and months in a new country experience similar reactions.

1. This passage mainly tells us__________ .

A. how to adapt to a new environment

B. how to live in Australia happily

C. how to study in a new environment

D. how to avoid being nervous

2. Why do people have many kinds of feelings in a new country?

A. Because they are surprised at everything they see.

B. Because buildings are very beautiful.

C. Because culture shock does have a great effect on them.

D. Because they have to learn something quickly.

3. The stress may disappear slowly as you_________ .

A. have the ability to get along well with others

B. can know more about the new culture

C. can consider the stress to be normal

D. are humorous and have a good mood

4. Which of the following is the most important thing in dealing with

culture shock?

A. Your efforts.

B. Your attitude.

C. Your feelings.

D. Your humor.

5. The underlined word “coping with” in the last paragraph has the same

meaning as_________ .

A. meeting with

B. mixing with

C. helping with

D. dealing with

Hey there,

So you’re about to spend four years of your life and tens of dollars of your parents’ money, and all you really know about college is that all of your friends are g oing. Do you ever stop to wonder why you’re going?

Relax. You’re making the right decision. First of all, you’ll discover what interests you by taking courses in many subjects. For example, it’s hard to decide if you want to be a painter if you’ve never p ainted any pictures; once you’re in a drawing-room on campus, you’ll know one way or the other. College is also a lot of fun —after you graduate, you’ll be working every weekday for 50 or so years. And remember that college graduate earn about twice the income of those who never attended college.

Finding the right college can be difficult. Fortunately, Johnson Review is here to help you every step of the way.

* Researching Schools. To us, the most important decision you’ll make is to choose the school that really fits you best — not the once that is the most competitive or has the best-equipped rooms.

* Applying to School. On https://www.wendangku.net/doc/2e15430900.html,, you’ll find hundreds of actual college application and links to many more.

* Raising Your Scores. American College Test is one of the most difficult parts of the admission course. It’s not the most important, though, and not everyone needs to prepare for the best. But, if you can do better, find the right course for better scores.

*Paying for School. Most families need financial aid for the high cost of college. The problem is that financial aid seems difficult to get and many families get caught up in the price of college rather than learning the ways to get financial aid. If you really do your research, you’ll l earn that you can afford to attend any college, no matter the cost.

Here are a few tips we’ve put together to help you learn English well.

Speak, speak, speak! Practise speaking as often as you can—even speaking to yourself is good practice. Try recording yourself whenever you can. Compare your pronunciation with the master version, see how you can do better and have another try. If you do this several times, you will find that each version is better than the last.

Why not learn with someone else? It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade a friend or family member to study with you, it will make you keep working. Arrange times to meet and set goals for the week, and test each other regularly.

Don’t get stuck (卡住)by a word you do n’t know. Practise improvising (即兴的) ways of getting your meaning across while speaking spontaneously (本能), even if you don’t know the exact words or phrases. Think of things you might want to say whenever you have spare time. A basic example is the use of tenses. If you don’t know the past tense but want to talk about yesterday, use the verb in the present tense and use the word for “yesterday”. Use facial expressions, hand movements, anything to get your meaning across.

Language learning is also about intuition (直觉). Guesswork is important in learning a new language. When listening to recorded material, you aren’t expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time. Learn to make maximum use of all the clues you can pick up. For example, what do the speakers sound like? Happy? Angry? Calm? Etc.

Build up your vocabulary. A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but don’t try to learn too much at once. It’s best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take a maximum of six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, then come back to them later. Much of the vocabulary in the course is presented by topic.

And above all, have fun!

1. Why should one have himself recorded when practicing speaking?

A. To encourage others to start.

B. To record his own progress.

C. To improve his speaking.

D. To compare himself with others.

Today, more and more schools are reaching out to involve parents, community members and businesses (工商企业) to help shape a child's future.

Parents need to be involved in their children's education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft (手工艺) or coaching a child's sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child's education. And don't forget to communicate with teachers —they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together. It's important to stay in touch with your child's education all through his or her school career.

Communities can help children create and achieve new goals.

Help with homework, read to a child, coach a children's team, or provide emotional (情感上的) support. Help solve problems and build self-esteem (自尊心). Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.

Businesses can also help shape our children's future. Invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing

a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what

goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how to use a computer; how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, teacher, nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands.

It really does take an entire village to raise a child. So share the responsibility(职责) -- and the joy -- of bringing a child to his or her full potential(潜能).

a child." is that ______.

IV任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分)

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stre ss as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

Try physical activity.

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.

Take care of yourself.

You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.

Make time for yourself.

Schedule time for both w ork and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as important to you over-all well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

Make a list of the things you need to do.

Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that there’s so much to do, and not enough time. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time. Set out to do the most important tasks first. Check off each task as it is completed. Array

A While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who, and different relationships between their classmates, I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports. When I was young, my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with the title of boyfriend. It's indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex(异性). In my opinion, even though some high school relationship might continue after graduation, the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim (微小的) that there really is not a point to it. Firstly you have to think about such a question----whether it is possible to hurt both of you, or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date(约会) if you hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic (浪漫的). While these are nice to have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives. The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly advise we should deal with it in a proper way and follow our teachers’ advice if necessary. 21. The author writes this passage probably for_ to read. A. high school students B. school teachers C. parents and teachers D. married couples 22. Between the opposite sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be__ than that of being boy/girl friends. A. weaker B. safer C. slimmer D. stronger 23. How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students? A. Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic. B. Studying is far more important than dating in school C. In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage D. Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family 24. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph might refer to_ . A. the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school B. advice given by both teachers and parents C. the pressure from school lessons and sports D. the relationship between students of opposite sexes B “Let’s go Dutch, shall we?” Jim said after a dinner to his friends in a restaurant. What does Jim mean? Long ago, there was a kind of dinner called Dutch treat. At a Dutch treat, the invited guests were expected to pay for their own share of the food and drink. Now, Dutch treat means when friends go out to have fun, each person pays his or her own share. There are many other expressions related with “Dutch” in American English. However, most of them were first used in England in the 17th century. At that time, the British and the Dutch were war enemies. So when British people talked about something wrong or bad, they would like to use the word “Dutch”. A common expression heard a few years ago was in Dutch. A friend may tell you, “You are in Dutch. The teacher is angry with you. Be careful!” When a soldier took Dutch leave, he left the army without permission. Dutch courage is the false courage produced by the effects of drinking wine. When someone has just said something you do n’t believe is true, you can say “I am a Dutch-man.” There is one expression that did come from the Dutch. That is to talk like a Dutch uncle. The Dutch were known for the strict and serious way they educated their children. 25. What did people mean by sa ying “Let’s go Dutch”? A. The guests should leave first. B. Each person should pay his or her own bill C. The food should be better next time. D. People should go to another restaurant. 26. According to the passage, the British in the 17th century ______. A. first used the word "Dutch" B. were mistaken for Dutch people C. got along well with the Dutch people D. used the word "Dutch" for something bad
