Money

Back in 2009, Norwegian Kristoffer Koch invested (投资) 150 kroner (about $27) in 5,000 bitcoins (比特币). He forgot about them until an article in the newspaper in April 2013 helped him remember them. Got a project? Need some finance for it? How about a bit of crowdfunding?

Growdfunding is a way of raising money through online networking. Y ou can use crowdfunding to finance just about anything: a film, a book, an album, a business idea, a tour, your university fee…

It‘s easy to do too. Simply post information about your project (项目) on a crowdfunding site and explain why you want the money. Then, friends, relatives or people you don‘t know can pay money for it.

One of the largest crowdfunding platforms is Kickstarter. Since its beginning in 2009, more than five million people have given money to over 50,000 creative projects. One of the features (特征) of Kickstarter is the all-or-nothing funding policy. As part of this, projects have to receive all their wanted finance or they get nothing. For example, if you want to raise $5,000 and you‘ve got 20 days to do it, but only manage to get $4,000 at the end of this period of time, you won‘t receive anything.

As the website says, it‘s less risk for everyone. ―If you need $5,000, it‘s difficulty having $1,000 and a bunch of people expecting you to complete a $5,000 project. Also, it‘s motivating. Projects either make their goal or find little support. There‘s little in-between. T o date, an surprising 44% of projects have reached their funding goals,‖ they explain.

So, the big question is, why do people back these projects? There are several reasons. A lot are supporting their friends‘ideas. Some are supporting people they‘ve long admired. Others are inspired by a new idea. And some are interested in a project‘s rewards. This could include a copy of what‘s being made, a limited edition CD or an invitation to the premiere of the film.

As they say on the website, backing a project is more than just giving someone money, it‘s about supporting a dream and being part of that dream.

On April 12, 1912, the Titanic left Europe on its first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Two days later, the Titanic hit an iceberg. Seven hundred people, mostly women and children, were able to get into lifeboats and escape, but1,523 people died when the Titanic sank. Ruth Becker Blanchard was a twelve-year-old passenger on the Titanic when it hit the iceberg. She was eighty-seven when the following interview was conducted.

When did you first realize that something had happened?

―My mother and I both woke up at midnigh t, and she was a little bit frighten ed because we couldn‘t hear the engines. On a big ship like that you can always hear the terrible sound of the engines, and since we were not supposed to land anywhere between London and New Y ork, she said, ?Something‘s the matter –we‘ve stopped moving. ‘‖

Were you frightened?

Manaus, a city in the middle of the jungle (丛林) of Brazil, got a chance when it was selected as the only Amazonian (亚马逊河的) site to be a host city for the World Cup soccer tournament. After busy preparations here, people living here are hoping their city of nearly 2 million can take the chance and pull off the event while making full use of the global spotlight.

But Manaus' special problems also appeared. It gained unwanted attention late last year when British media and the England football team manager questioned the wisdom of holding games here. England manager Roy Hodgson said he would like to avoid playing in Manaus because of the heat and wet weather. The Daily Mirror complained of the cost and difficulty of getting to the city, more than 700 miles inland from the Atlantic. The proud Amazonian citizens were angry, and Mayor Arthur Virgilio said England was not welcome.

Since there are no highways to the city, those who aren't willing to spend days traveling up the Amazon by boat will rely on Brazil's air transportation system, taking a four-hour flight that costs about $400 from Rio de Janeiro. One recent trip by air from Manaus to the coastal city of Natal, another World Cup city, requires three stops and takes more than 10 hours.

But development based on manufacturing (制造业)has helped to protect the natural environment around the city, since it provides jobs that don't cut down forests — for wood, agriculture or meat production — as happens in most of the jungle regions (地区) in Brazil where roads have arrived, said Alex Rivas, a professor at the Federal University of Amazonas.

During t he recent meeting of the American Medical Association in Chicago, the organization‘s delegates (代表) voted for the first time to say that obesity is a disease. How should the rest of us respond? When we meet obese people, should we cast them a knowing glance of concern and ask how they are doing? Y et many sensible (明智的) people know that declaring obesity a disease is a mistake. Simply put, obesity is not a disease. T o be sure, it is a risk factor for some diseases. I have known slim people who took care of themselves throughout their lives yet fell ill and died young. Others who showed no particular interest in their health and did not watch their weight lived to a ripe old age. In most cases, we simply cannot tell from a person‘s weight what lies ahead for them in life.

In many cultures throughout history and even today, plump (丰满的) has been preferred to thin. In a community full of people who struggle to get enough to eat, being well-fed and having a well-fed family is often a sign of success. A hearty appetite (食欲) generally suggests health and may even show that a person knows how to enjoy life.

This reminds me of a story about Herman W ells, the long-time president of Indiana University. W ells was obese from childhood throughout his adult life. In preparation for a small operation, his doctor once advised him to lose 20 pounds. ―That‘s easy,‖ W ells replied. ―I have done that many times.‖ He felt no shame for it. In fact, he could even laugh about it, and he did so throughout all 97 years of his full life.

Is obesity bad for people? For some, especially patients who are extremely overweight, the answer is almost certainly yes. W ould many overweight people benefit from exercising more and eating less? Again, the answer is likely yes. But this does not make obesity a disease. Many people are not harmed by carrying extra pounds and some may actually benefit from it. For these reasons, we should think twice before labeling obese people diseased.
