Saving your hard-earned money can be difficult. As most of us enjoy spending rather than saving, I certainly had a tough time holding on to my money every payday. When I got my first few paychecks, right away I spend the cold hard cash I'd earned by hard work. But I quickly realized that this sort of spending wouldn't really help me get the things I wanted. So I made a pact with myself. I promise that before I did anything with the money, I would deposit at least 50% of the money into my savings account. That way, I eliminated the temptation to spend that money. After I got used to saving my money, it was much easier for me not to be tempted to buy things when I saw them. When I saw a CD, or vedio game that looked appealing,I learn to ask myself,"Do I really need this?"Asking this question helped me appreciate my money, and not let it slip out of my wallet quite so fast.

Believe or not, 43,000,000 Americans are gardening. That is about one in six. Gardeners, of course, come in many varieties. Not surprisingly, most of them are people who live in the suburbs, and enjoy planting flowers, or maybe a small vegetable garden.

The average age of gardeners in America is about 45 years old; they usually fall somewhere in the middle class. But the fastest growing groups are city dwellers. Urban residents are finding ways of gardening even in their crowded areas. Many go to large public gardens, as a place designed by the city for garden, and you can actually ranch your own plot.

Still other people use their balconies or roof tops, wherever they can find the space to plant small patches of green.

当然,提问的方式很多,常见的疑问词有who, whose, why, when, where, how many/much/long/often等。 Peter Brown is _______.(06年徐州) A. an old farmer B. a young farmer C. an old doctor Script: My name is Peter Brown. I live on a farm with my children and my grandchildren. Our farmhouse isn’t large, but it is very nice. We keep some cows in a building, and that building is more modern than our own house. We also have a simple chicken house. We have about twenty hens and ducks, so we a ways hart enough eggs for tile family. And we have large fields over there. We grow wheat and corn. I often ride horses across the hills behind the farm. We like to farm. Farming is a healthy life. One day Zhang Liang was talking a walk when he saw an old man sitting on a bridge. The old man saw Zhang Liang coming. He threw one of his shoes into the water and said, “Young man, get my shoe up.”…(06年济南市)听了以上材料后,我们不难发现第一句便是文章的主旨句,文章接下来的内容都是围绕Zhang Liang与an old man展开的。

Part III Listening Comprehension Section B Passage 1 Since I started working part-time at a grocery store, I have learned that a customer is more than someone who buy something. To me, a customer is a person whose memory fails entirely once he or she starts to push a shopping card. One of the first things customers forget is how to count. There is no other way to explain how so many people get in their express line, which is clearly marked 15 items or less, with 20, 25 or even a cart load of items. Customers also forget why they came to the store in the first place. Just as I finish ringing up an order, a customer will say, “Oops, I forgot to pick up a fresh loaf of bread. I hope you don’t mind waiting while I go get it。” Five minutes later, he’s back with the bread, a bottle of milk, and three rolls of paper towels. Strange is that seems customers also seem to forget that they have to pay for their groceries. Instead of writing a check or looking for a credit card while I am ringing up the groceries, my customers will wait until I announce the total. Then, in surprise, she says, “Oh no, what did I do with my check book?” After 5 minutes of digging through her purse, she borrows my pen because she’s forgotten her s. But I have to be tolerant of customers because they pay my salary, and that’s something I can’t afford to forget。 Q26. What does the speaker say about customers’ entering the grocery A scientific team is studying the thinking ability of eleven and half month old children. The test is a simple one. The baby watches a sort of show on a small stage. In Act One of the show, a yellow cube is lifted from a blue box, and moved across the stage. Then it is returned to the box. This is repeated 6 times. Act Two is similar except that the yellow cube is smaller. Baby boys do not react at all to the difference and the size of the cube. But girls immediately become excited.

Passage 1 A team of Australian chemistry students have strengthened the chemical bonds of insulin to make it stable even at warm temperatures-a breakthrough that could simplify diabetes management. The finding could shed light on how insulin works, and eventually lead to insulin pills, rather than injections or pumps. Insulin needs to be kept cold because it is made of weak chemical bonds that degrade at temperature above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, making it inactive. But using a series of chemical reactions, the research team, comprised of students from Monash University inAustralia, replaced the unstable bonds with stronger,carbon-based ones. The stronger bonds stabilize the insulin’s two protein chains without interfering with its natural activity, according to a story about the findings at SciGuru. The so called “dicarba ” insulins were stable at room temperature for several years, SciGuru says. Even more promising is that the findings provide insight into how insulin works. People with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes do not produce enough insulin, whether it' s the result of an auto-immune disorder that stops producing it entirely (Type 1) or a condition brought on by other factors like obesity, in which the body can no longer use it properly (Type 2) . Insulin is the mechanism that delivers glucose from the blood to the cells,so diabetics must take a synthetic form of the hormone. When insulin unlocks cells to allow sugar to be taken up from the blood , the hormone ' s shape changes-but no one is sure what the shape looks like. If researchers knew that shape, they could design smaller, less-complex versions of insulin that don’t use proteins. Then it could be administered in pill form rather than directly into the bloodstream. Understanding the

11.Where to Spend the Last Day What is the best choice of a dying person who is sinking fast, to stay in a hospital or at home? The choice is hard to make and it depends critically on specific situations. Some people insist that if there is still a ray of hope for the sick, it is better for him to stay in a hospital. Along with advanced equipment, there are qualified doctors and nurses, who are eager to offer the best service, though it will cost some money. Who knows whether doctors will not work wonders at a critical moment? At least they can alleviate the patient’s pain. However, a luck star is not always shining over the head of every incurable patient. In most cases, no miracle emerges. Otherwise, he is not a dying person at all. That being the case, some people prefer that the sick person should stay at home with his folks, who love and care about him. No place is like home. Since there is nothing doctors can do to save him, why should he spend a large sum of money staying in a hospital at the end of his life, lonely and sadly? In my opinion, both choices are good according to different situations. If possible, it is better for the patient to make his final choice at his free will because nobody has the right to do it for him. 判断 1) Where to spend the last day depends critically on specific situations. ( ) 2) It is better for a patient to stay in the hospital because the hospital will offer the best service to alleviate the patient’s pain. ( ) 3) The disadvantage of staying in a hospital is the cost of much money. ( ) 4) The author prefers to staying in a hospital, because the hospital may work wonders at a critically moment. ( ) 5)If possible , it is better for the family members to make decisions because the patient will hesitate at the critical moment. 填空 Some people insist that if there is still a _________________ of hope for the sick, it is better for him to stay in a hospital. Along with _________________ equipment, there are ____________ doctors and nurses, who are _________________ to offer the best service, though it will cost some money. Who knows whether doctors will not work ___________ at a ___________ moment? At least they can ________________ the patient’s pain. 12. The Best Age to Be Each age has its pleasure, and its pains. The happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets. Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. A child finds pleasure in doing almost anything. But a child has his pains: he is not free as he wishes, as he thinks people are. A young man becomes free from the discipline of school and parents, when he starts to earn his own living; but at the same time ha is forced to accept responsibilities. He has to work hard if he wants to live comfortably. If he breaks the laws of the society as he used break the laws of his parents, he may be put into prison. If he work hard, he may have a happiness of seeing his own success. Old age has always been thought of as the worst age to be, but the old can have the joy of
