If you ask Japanese middle school students about fashion at school, most would say their school uniforms are always in fashion. They wear their uniforms even at parties or going shopping.

Many girl characters in popular Japanese cartoons wear sailor style clothes like school uniforms too.

Girls’ uniforms for Japanese middle schools were borrowed from 1920s British navy(海军) uniforms. Boys’ u niforms are from Russian army dress(军服). They are usually black, grey or dark blue, and make students look clean and smart.

Students never get bored with adding something special to their uniforms to show a little bit more individuality(个性). Girls may wear big socks to match their pleated skirts(褶裙) or take off their bows(蝴蝶结) on the top(上衣).

Sometimes boys don’t do up the buttons on their dress shirts. Some girls even shorten their skirts or don’t wear their neckties(领带).

School is expensive for many African children. Lots of families can’t afford school u niforms or exercise books even though they don’t have to pay for school.

For those lucky enou gh to go to school, they have a lot to learn. Some take two languages classes: English or French, and their first language. There is also math, science, history, social studies and geography. Chores take up much of children’s time after school. They have to get water and firewood for the family every day.

Also there’s cleaning, washing and cooking.
