17. With the upgrading of a heated online debate sparked by an essay entitled Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior, published in the Wall Street Journal about the virtues of strict Chinese parenting, written by Amy Chua, a professor at Yale Law School, parenting and education will never be the same for both Chinese and Westerners. The following are opinions from both sides. Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should:

(1) summarize briefly the opinions from both sides;

(2) give your comment

Chinese

A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too.

There are tons of studies showing marked and quantifiable differences between Chinese and Westerners when it comes to parenting. In one study of 50 American mothers and 48 Chinese mothers, almost 70% of the Western mothers

said that "stressing academic success is not good for children" or "parents need to foster the idea that learning is fun". By contrast, roughly none of the Chinese mothers felt the same way. Instead, the vast majority of the Chinese mothers said that they believe their children can be "the best" students, that "academic achievement reflects successful parenting" and that if children did not excel at school then there was "a problem" and parents "were not doing their jobs." Other studies indicate that compared to Western parents, Chinese parents spend approximately 10 times as long every day drilling academic activities with their children. By contrast, Western kids are more likely to participate in sports teams.

What Chinese parents advocate is that nothing is fun until you're good at it. To get good at anything you have to work, and children on their own never want to work, which is why it is crucial to override their preferences. This often requires fortitude on the part of the parents because the children will resist; the things are always the hardest at the beginning, which is where Western parents tend to give up.

Westerners

A recent manifesto by Chinese-American mother Amy Chua, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, chides American parents for shrinking from the pitiless discipline she argues is necessary to turn out great students.;

There has been wide criticism of Chua's book in the U.S. "It is kind of extreme," Jeffrey Seinfeld, a professor at New York University, told the Los.Angles Times. "...standards of parenting need to be realistic and tailored to each child. Children

need parents who can guide them, not force them to do things they are probably not interested in. "

“In Asia, it's about long hours--long hours in school, long hours after school. In Finland, the school day is shorter than it is in the U.S. It's a more appealing model,” says Andreas Schleicber, who directs the PISA program at the OECD.

There's less homework, too. “An hour a day is good enough to be a successful student,”says Katja Tuori, who is in charge of student counseling at Kallahti Comprehensive, which educates kids up to age 16. "These kids have a life."

Finland has a number of smart ideas about how to teach kids while letting them be kids. For instance, one teacher ideally stays with a class from first grade through sixth grade. The teacher has many years to learn the quirks of a particular group and tailor the teaching approach accordingly.

Is Chinese Parenting Superior to Western Parenting?

With the release of “Tiger Mom Cat Dad”, strict Chinese parenting has been a hot topic in our society. "Tiger mother" represents a very strict Chinese mother who pushes her children to be best at school, sport, music, etc—no matter how much does it cost. Most of Chinese children are very familiar with the studying experience. Many Chinese parents set high standards for their kids even if they cannot achieve them, aiming at ensuring their children's success in the future competition. The reason why this topic has become so heated is that "Tiger mother" represents a strict Chinese education mode. Here westerners and Chinese parents hold contrary

opinions.

Western parents believe that stressing academic success is not good for children and what parents should do is respecting their children's personalities, encouraging them to pursue true passions and providing them with a nurturing environment.On the contrary, the Chinese believe that only good school grades can guarantee their children a promising future, especially in this increasing fiercing competitive world. They also want their children to have a happy childhood, but it worries them their children would have a hard time when they grow up.

As far as I am concerned, both education modes are not perfect. The healthy development of children requires not only general knowledge, but also moral and physical education. The most important is that everyone should have a special field in which he or she is skilled so that he can make contribution to the society. Therefore, it is unwise to judge whether a education system is scientific or not. We should combine the strengths of both parties with their children's special conditions so that they can enjoy the process of learning.

18. Nowadays, schools in China are placing too much emphasis on English, which has caused “destructive” damage to China's overall education according to some education experts. Is English crippling Chinese education? Experts and English teachers have totally different views. The following are opinions from both sides. Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should:

(1) summerize briefly the opinions from both sides;

(2) give your comment.

Experts

Mr. Hu: I have long been an opponent to the importance of the English language in the Chinese classroom. The importance of English is overestimated. It is unnecessary to impose English-language studies on students who will pursue professions that do not require a foreign language. All Chinese children, from infancy, have to lumber with this difficulty--to comprehend an alien language. Yet maybe just 0.001% of them will ever get the need to use this over-hyped "useful" language in their life. Does it make any sense to cause this unnecessary emotional and intellectual hardship on our children, aside from the massive money wasted, which could be better if spent on Chinese language teaching staff for the schools?

Ms. Yang: English is just a sort of language, which is not supposed to be added to our curriculums. In China, we are imposed or enforced to study it as a pretty important subject in primary and high school, as well as in college. That's somewhat wrong. It turns out to be compulsory and coercive. And this is against the fundamental law of language learning, which can be a fun. But to

most Chinese students, it has come to be a suffering.

English teachers

Ms. Li : If there is a crisis in Chinese education, it is the education system that focuses on exams and rote learning that should be blamed instead of the subject of English. Moreover, I want you to understand that a child's learning capabilities vastly depend on the environment it is fostered in. Opening up your mind to other cultures enriches you, broadens your horizon, and improves your creative thinking. Therefore, learning a foreign language is certainly not a waste of time. Personally, I will take good care that my child masters at least 5 languages before the age of 20, and I'd advise everyone to do the same.

Mr. Wang: Actually, language is not the problem--the education system is. Chinese students are not more stupid than European ones--if you give them a good environment, they will easily excel at studying and develop themselves much better. The meaning of college is not only let its students be skillful or specialized in some areas but also expose them to some great minds and ideas all around the world. Knowing a second language can undoubtedly help students have a global thinking as well as draw inspiration from the world, which can help them go further.

Mr. Zhao: Although the advantages of learning a foreign language now outweigh the overall disadvantages, it is hard and takes a lot of general awareness and good policies to ensure this in the long run, especially English--since it has been a near monopoly in the world. It seems that there is a
