The afternoon sun shone brightly on the white sands of the beach. A father and his young son running happily across the sand.

My father died a month ago. He?d been as healthy as anyone could see a 38-year-old man to be. He?d gone to sleep one night and just never got up in the morning.

My father always had a ready smile and a kind word. When I was little, he?d take me fishing or to the park. We were close then. I wanted to grow up to be just like Dad. Then things began to change. I could never find time to do things with him any more. We used to argue a lot and I know it was I who usually started it.

Dad tried to talk to me, but it was hard on both of us. I was embarrassed by him he had never learned to read and dropped out of school to take a job in a car mending shop. Then he started to act strangely. He?d stay up late at nigh t, and when I saw him the next morning there would be dark circles around his eyes. One night I found out why.

It was cold, so I decided to get another blanket(毛毯) to warm up my bed. The kitchen light was still on and I went to turn it off. Looking around the corner, I saw my father at the kitchen table, with a book in front of him and a pen in his hand. He was talking slowly and quietly. After a while I recognized (认出) the words as Dr. Seuss?s “ Cat in the Hat.” I bought the book when I was little and had asked my father to read it to me. I remember how his face turned red as he handed it back to me and said, “Sorry, son.” Now, as I heard the words coming from him, I was surprised.

I never said my discovery but I began to have more respect(尊敬) for my father. I often asked him for advice and spent more time with him. The three words were on the tip of my tongue, but I still could not tell him I loved him.

At his funeral( 葬礼), I didn?t cry. Later I cried for hours, alone. As I stood on the beach where we once played, a heavy sadness hung in my heart. I wondered if his life would have been happier, if I had said those three words to tell him--- I loved him.

1) DIY, which means Do It Yourself, is quite popular in UK. Lots of

stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programmes show people how

to DIY.

2) English people like DIY. There is a saying in UK----“As Englishman?s home is his castle”. Huge number of people spend their holidays making their homes beautiful “castles”. If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people have discovered the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. With the economic downturn at present, many people can not afford a big house. They are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.

3) DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture which people need to get together themselves with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can?t understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are simple and clear, but the furniture itself is difficult to build. One thing is for sure, though most DIY projects are started with the best intentions. Many of them may not get finished. DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical should be done by a professional worker. Unluckily, many people don?t care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year over 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in UK, including 41,000 who fell off ladders.

WHETHER you like it or not, your parents are responsible (负责任

are stressing you out with their love? Do you often fight with them?

Hu Muqing, 16, of Shenyang, complains that his parents are only

concerned about his grades and not his other needs. He and his parents fight

the most about the time he spends watching TV and on the Internet. The

Shenyang teenager said, “They think because I?m in middle school I should

concentrate on my work. However, I need to be able to relax. Most of my friends can watch TV and surf the Web a lot. Sometimes it?s hard to talk to them.”

After some negotiations (商谈), Hu has been allowed to watch TV for 15 to 20 minutes every night, but has been told to keep away from the computer.

Shen Ying, 17, Jianyang, Sichuan Province. Since she feels she?s grown up now, she wants more respect from her parents. “My father shouted at me when he?s in a bad mood. On Mother?s Day or Father?s Day, say …Thank you? to your parents or give them a small gift with a lett er so they can get inside your head a little,” he advised. Sun also believes that teenagers have to work to earn trust and respect from their parents. “You need to make sure they know that you?re not going to screw up (搞砸) your exams or let them down. During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape.

When I traveled across to the other side of the island, I could see the

other islands, and I said to myself, “Perhaps I can get there with a boat.

Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”

So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and

then began to make a long hole(洞) in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe(独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How foolish I was! Why didn?t I think before I began working? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn?t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn?t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.

That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I didn?t try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison(监狱), and I was just happy to be alive.

A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island, I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.

My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.

I kept food and tools(工具) at both my houses, and also wild goats(山羊). There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats?milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn(玉米) fields. And so many years went by.

Why are so many people afraid to fail? Quite simply because

we forget that failure is part of the human life. Every person can

fight failure and finally succeed if they regard failure as challenges.

But most parents try hard to prevent their children from

knowing that they have failed. One way is to lower standards(标准).

When a child finishes making a table, its mother describes it as

“Fantastic”, though the table isn?t good at all. Another way is to

blame(责备) others. If John fails science, mother will say his

teacher is unfair or foolish.

There?s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared (措手不及)for life in the real world. Young children need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time—and that it?s possible to enjoy a game even when you don?t win. A child often feels terrible, of course, when he is not invited to a birthday party, or is not chosen into a football team. But parents should not say “It doesn?t matter” quickly. The young children should be allowed to experience disappointment —and be helped to come out of it.

Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both children and their parents. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. You must learn to ask “Why did I fail?”. Don?t blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don?t be shy about asking them. Success just repeats what has been done. It is not as good a teacher as failure. You can learn how to give a good party from an unsuccessful one.

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save you life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.

From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.

The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.

Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗) into the room.

On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥) might end in injury. Bushes(灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall.

Decoding the young brain There was a funny experiment to see how a young child would answer a specific question compared to an adult. After the adult had spent some time speaking with the child, he asked the child, “What do you think about me?” The child answered, “You talk too much.” When the adult performed the same experiment with another adult, the reply to the same question was, “I think you're a very interesting person.” Even if the adult f elt the same way as the child, his brain allowed him to take a moment, consider the question, and come up with an answer. He could have been annoyed, but his answer didn't reflect it because he was being polite. The secret lies in the science of the developing brain. The child's honest answer was reflected in the fact that his brain wasn't equipped to filter(过滤) information before answering the question. As a result, he was honest, but he said something that may have been hurtful. However, the child did not intentionally hurt the adult; it's just the way his brain works. As a child grows into adolescence and then into adulthood, that changes. The human brain is made up of billions of neurons(神经元). In order for our body to execute a command, like getting up from a chair and walking to the other room, the neurons in the brain have to communicate with each other. They also help us employ our senses like taste and touch and help us remember things. When the neurons send messages, perhaps one sensation(感觉) the person feels is excitement about eating a cookie because it is so delicious. Later, if that person smells a cookie or hears someone talking about a cookie, it can spark the electrical signals that call up the memory of eating the delicious cookie. In an adult, he or she may remember that eating too many cookies can have consequences, like weight gain. But because the younger brain is more impulsive(冲动的), the desire to feel the pleasure of the sweet treat outweighs the consequences. That is becau se when a child is young, his brain is “wired” in such a way that he seeks pleasure and is more willing to take risks than an adult. This affects his decision-making process and it is why younger people tend to be more impulsive. Sometimes parents have to tell their children over and over again before the child remembers that something is dangerous or risky. How many times have we heard a parent say, “I tell her this all the time, but she never listens!” To conclude, what we know about the young brain is that children are more likely than adults to be impulsive. It isn't always necessarily because they are being naughty; it may very well be because of their brains. So the next time you ask a child what he really thinks of you, be prepared for any kind of answer.

At this busiest gift-giving time of the year, many of us wonder what to do with the unwanted presents we get. Is it all right to re-gift—to give the unwanted present to someone else? A gift is a symbol of what a relationship means to us. The best gifts should be a necessity for the receiver. A gift should be about pleasing the other person, not showing off the taste, wealth or power of the giver. We should give with the other person, not ourselves in mind. Still, a friend, colleague or family member who knows us well might now and then buy us something that is the last thing we’d buy for ourselves. People in long-term relationships can be surprised at the choices in clothes, music or gadgets(小玩意) made by their friends or relatives. Re-gifting creates a dilemma(窘境)because we don’t want to hurt the feelings of the gift-giver, but we also feel it’s wasteful not to use something that might benefit someone else. Re-gifting avoids waste and pays back a debt of gratitude we owe to someone else, but it presents the risk that the original giver will be hurt if she or he discovers what we did. Following are a few guidelines for re-gifting. ?Don’t use the gift. ?Re-gift soon, so you don’t risk re-gifting to the original giver. ?Make sure that the new receiver doesn’t know the original giver or is unlikely to run into him or her. If there’s a possibility that original giver could learn about the re-gift or if he or she expects to see you wearing the gift, consider asking for permission. Let him or her know how much you appreciate the thought behind the gift. A person who understands that a gift is intended to be pleasing will understand. As long as the person who gave the unwelcome gift doesn’t mind or won’t find out, you can re-gift with a clear conscience. Besides, you can be sure that at least one of the gifts you’ve received was given originally to someone else. Scratchy throats, stuffy noses and body aches all result in discomfort, but being able to tell if the cause is a cold or flu may make a difference in how long the discomfort lasts, because the

一般疑问句由Yes 或 No 来回答,而特殊疑问句由疑问词what,who,where,why,when,which 和how 引出,回答时需完成疑问词所指的对象。 比如“Is he a teacher or a student? ”答案是“He is a teacher.”或“ He is a student.”

(1) White-collar workers going to great lengths for stress relief A soldier of the South Korean special attack corps paints his eyes during a friendly Taekwondo match at a South Korean Army Base in Pochon, north of Seoul. Stressed out white-collar workers are scaling(攀登)skyscrapers, camping out on rooftops, smashing up restaurants, pretending to be children and even visiting cemeteries in a bid to relieve the pressure of modern life. As the country's economy continues to steam ahead, once popular forms of entertainment, such as karaoke, card games and even boxing bars, appear to be losing their appeal. Consider the members of Shanghai's Cat Rain club. By day, this group of young women works executive jobs, but by night they climb buildings so they can spend the night on the roof. "It's a good way to release our pressure. You feel relaxed when you're sitting on the roof, looking up to the sky and chatting with intimate(亲密的)friends," said Gong Ying, 25. The stress of work is not just limited to people in Shanghai. A recently opened restaurant in Beijing encourages customers to smash plates - as long as they are willing to pay to replace them. Though there has been some debate about the extravagance(奢侈)of such services, some psychologists say the activity reflects the desire of some white-collar workers to vent their angst. Some workers even appear eager to return to their childhoods. This May, hundreds of people took part in a festival in which adults pretended to be children. It was an adults-only event, and participants could read comics and eat sweets all day. Scenic places such as parks and rivers can also help people relax and put things in perspective. But a cemetery? Cemetery companies in Shanghai organized visits to local graveyards for stressed-out workers in March. The participants were taken to quiet spots in the cemetery where they could contemplate(考虑、打算)life and their futures. Roof-camper Chen Bin, an IT marketing professional, said she had camped out on a rooftop about 30 times. When she's not sleeping out under the stars, she also has several other adrenalin-fueled interests, such as downhill racing and paragliding. "Pressure may bring us distress, but it doesn't mean we can't find ways out," Chen says. "Life should be imaginative."
