Dear Linda

In your e-mail you say you are not sure whether …

To begin with, our hometown is badly in need of talents specialized in environmental protection with the development of economy. Waste water here needs treating in a better way, as is the rubbish. So to attract talents like you, many preferential policies are adopted here. If you start a business, it will be easier for you to get loans and you don't have to pay so much tax. In addition, old people prefer living in an environment they are familiar with. When working back home, you will be able to keep your parents company, helping them to enjoy their old age.

Of course, you have a lot to do now to begin well here. For example, you have to master advanced technology. It is also necessary for you to gain enough working experience. What’s more, you will have to make an informed decision of what you will be devoted to.

I hope what I have written here can be of some help to you . All the best!

Yours,

Mary

Good morning, everyone! I would like to begin my speech with my view on the policy itself.

Personally, I applaud for this policy. As we all know, many college graduates can’t find a job upon their graduation. Starting a business, particularly before graduating, is a good way to ease the tension. Moreover, college students are the most energetic group, so encouraging them to be engaged in business early will benefit our nation with more innovation.

Nevertheless, beneficial as the policy is, not all the students have a preference for doing business, me included. Money is the first problem to a poor student. It’s impossible to run a business without fund. Secondly, lack of social experience will surely make my business end in failure if started. Most importantly, I am not keen on business at all. A stable job and easy life is my biggest ambition.

To sum up, I wholeheartedly approve of the new regulation but won’t choose to establish my own business at college.

Despite the fact that the Chinese generally read more books compared with the previous years, the past year witnessed a significant decline in the number of books read by those under age 17, especially the middle school students.

Quite a few things give rise to the problem. Due to the fierce competition, the load of study for middle school students gets heavier and heavier as their grade advances, leaving little time for reading. What's worse, the rapid development of electronic devices and various forms of entertainment have taken up much of their spare time.

Reading enriches our mind and broadens our horizons. (Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.) To deal with the problem, we ourselves should know the significance of reading for our growth and develop a good reading habit. For me, I will try to take part in various reading activities to enhance my enthusiasm in reading. Moreover, I will make plans for reading on the monthly basis. Only in this way can I read and enjoy more books.

Nowadays piracy(剽窃)has become a more and more serious problem. As is shown in the picture, a man is carrying a large packet, selling pirated CDs and DVDs in the street at a very low price. However, the boys refuse to buy them.

We should praise the action of the boys. Companies and individuals spend time, effort and money in creating and producing their products. Therefore, they deserve to be paid for their work and their intellectual property should be protected. But unfortunately, some companies and people try to make money by producing fake or pirated goods.

To deal with this situation, I think measures must be taken to protect intellectual property. On one hand, relevant laws should be passed and those who produce pirated products should be severely punished. On the other hand, we should raise people’s awareness of protecting intellectual property. As consumers, we should not buy pirated products or download music and films illegally.

Recently our class has held a heated discussion about whether it’s good for teenagers to surf the Internet through mobile phones. Opinions are divided on this matter.

About 60% of the students support it. They think by surfing the Internet through mobile phones, they can know about the latest information anytime and anywhere they like, which will broaden their views. Moreover, i t’s convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and friends. At the same time, it provides many functions, thus making them relaxed.

However, about 40% of the students hold the opposite opinion, arguing that it’s a waste of time and money to play games and chat online through mobile phones. Worse still, there is a lot of harmful information online, which surely has a bad influence on teenagers. Being addicted to online games does great harm to their life as well as their studies.

In my opinion, teenagers can surf the Internet through mobile phones on condition that they can make good use of it. Besides, our government should take measures to ensure a safer online environment for teenagers.

Nowadays, human beings are faced with an embarrassing situation.

As can be seen from the cartoon, we see a man talking to a paper bird kept in his cage and beside him is a vast desert dotted with (密布着)endless tree roots. Obviously, birds have lost their homes as people have cut down all the trees. As a result, humans have lost their animal friends.

The scene may seem ridiculous and unbelievable to us, but it may become a reality in the future if we go on developing economy regardless of the damage caused to the environment. Now in some places, trees have been cut down without limits. Some scientists say that there will be no vast forests in 20 or 30 years and many species will die out. It is really a terrible thing.

As far as I am concerned, we should realize the importance of environmental protection and live in harmony with our animal friends. …

At present, Internet Slang, such as “GG, MM, Xia Mi”,has become popular among the teenagers.

There are different opinions on Internet Slang. Some students think Internet Slang is vivid, fashionable and full of humor and intelligence. Besides, it makes chatting on the Internet quicker. However, some other students think Internet Slang lacks depth of thought and has spoiled the purity of our language and culture. Also, it is hard to understand and not accepted by most people. The words sometimes might make people confused, even resulting in misunderstanding.

Every coin has two sides. In my opinion, living in the Information Age, if we don’t know the Internet Slang, we seem to fall behind the times. It will be OK as long as these terms are used correctly in proper situations.

There are many TV programs on Chinese cuisines, but few are like A Bite of China. The latest seven-part documentary offers insights into the geographical, historical and cultural dimensions of what the Chinese eat.

China’s long history, vast territor y and extensive contact with many other cultures have given birth to the distinctive Chinese culinary(烹饪的)art. With several thousand years of creative efforts, the intelligent and hardworking Chinese people have been able to employ an endless variety of natural ingredients and cooking methods in making Chinese food, which may well account for the universal popularity of Chinese restaurants and Chinese delicacies(佳肴)overseas. A meal in China often consists of main food –typically rice or noodles –and accompanying dishes, such as vegetables, meat, and fish. As for the cooking methods the Chinese people usually use, frying, stewing(煮)and simmering(炖)are among the very common. As a saying goes, “Y ou are what you eat.” In my opinion, food is always conn ected with people, reflecting their different living situations and attitudes. Besides, many Chinese people value the time when the families or friends can get together – cases in which food serves as reminders of happy times.

Since the Copenhagen Climate Conference, carrying out low carbon common & living a low carbon life has been a hot topic. Recently our class had a heated discussion about it.

Through the discussion, we are fully aware of the necessity of carrying out a low carbon economy in our country. Fossil fuels have been mainly used for power for quite a long time, thus producing large quantities of greenhouse gases and causing serious pollution. People have paid more attention to economic growth than the environmental protection. / People have given priority to economic growth over the environmental protection. If the situation continues, China will die of its own development.

During the discussion, my classmates put forward the following suggestions about how to take a green development path. First, more trees should be planted to expand forest coverage. Second, clean energy and renewable energy should be developed. Third, many things that people throw away should be recycled and reused.

We all think it everyone’s duty to live a low carbon life. We should try to save every bit of water and electricity. We should use public transportation as much as possible. Besides, we should call on people around us to make contributions to creating a green homeland.

People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. There exist two reasons, which may account for this subtle difference. First, conservative Chinese parents are never accustomed to conveying directly how much they are proud of their kids. This tendency to conceal feelings hardly helps children develop a strong sense of self-confidence. Second, the current educational system excessively emphasizes the value of academic performance, thus forcing children to extensively believe that only by achieving excellent scores can they make their parents proud. This bias unfairly undermines the significance of talents
