One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote, “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?”

I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn’t have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically.

The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawing on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon-in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.

Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company(陪伴). But why did he never look at me?

“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought, “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, w hen we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.

“It’s your turn,” he said.

After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.

Maybe I gave David something. But 1 also leaned that one, without any words, can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an car that listens.

41. When he first met the author, David ________.

C. looked a little nervous

D. showed up with his teacher

42. As a psychologist, the author ________.

A. was ready to listen to David

43. David enjoyed being with the author because he ________.

A. wanted to ask the author for advice

B. needed to share sorrow with the author

C. liked the children’s drawings in the office

D. beat the author many times in the chess game

44. What can be inferred about David?

A. He recovered after months of treatment.

B. He liked biking before he lost his family.

C. He went into university soon after starting to talk.

D. He got friends in school before he met the author.

45. What made David change?

A. His teacher’s help.

B. The author’s friendship.

C. His exchange of letters with the author.

D. The author's silent communication with him.

A team of scientists in the United States has created a new type of mouse that has an immune system similar to that of humans. The scientists hope their research with these mice will speed up development of a vaccine to prevent human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV.

Scientists from the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard are carrying out the new research.

Earlier research has shown that certain individuals with HIV have immune systems that do better at controlling the AIDS virus. These individuals are commonly known as “elite controllers.” They often live longer with the virus and have fewer problems early on.

Todd Allen is one of the lead writers of the new study, which was published in Science Translational Medicine.

TODD ALLEN: “Some people are able to control HIV very well, to very low copies. And what we know is that they express a certain type of host genetics that dictate that they target very critical regions of the virus.”

By using the new experimental mice, the researchers hope to learn what it is about the immune systems of these “elite controllers” that causes them to deal with the HIV virus better than others.

The “humanized” mice were created using stem cells and tissues from human donors. Some of this tissue was taken from liver and thymus tissue. The thymus is a large gland at the bottom of the throat. It trains T-lymphocytes, or T-cells to attack unwelcome microbes, thereby protecting the body from infection.

When the scientists infected the so-called “humanized” mice with the HIV virus, the T-cell reaction in the mice was the exact same as that of humans.

Earlier research using rhesus monkeys helped scientists understand how the virus attacks cells. These monkeys were seen as good replacements for humans because they could be easily infected with a primate version of HIV, known as SIV.

However, genetic differences in the two versions of the virus and the immune systems suggested that the monkeys were not the best candidates for HIV research.

Todd Allen says the experiments with the new “humanized” mouse more correctly reflected what happens in humans with the AIDs virus.

TODD ALLEN: “So it allows us to take all the discoveries we’ve had in studying individuals infected with HIV in the different immune responses and host genetics that correlate with a better outcome, and translate that now into an animal model where we can actually further manipulate that to understand exactly how these individuals are doing that.”

Mr. Allen and the other researchers hope further studies with the “humanized” mouse will lead to an HIV vaccine.

46. Why were the “humanized” mice developed?

A. To help learn the nature of mice.

B. To cure the AIDS.

C. To wipe out mice.

D. To make the vaccine develop faster.

47. What can be learned about “elite controllers”?

A. They are easily infected the AIDS.

B. Their immune system are different in structure.

C. They have a longer living span with the AIDS.

D. They are not good at controlling the AIDS.

48. It can be inferred from the passage that

A. The researchers know what makes elite controller more able.

B. The humanized mice are same as ordinary ones.

C. The thymus plays an important role in protecting the body from infection.

D. The T-cell reaction in the mice is the same as that of humans.

49. Why the scientists prefer the mouse to the monkey?

A. The mouse is more related to the human genes.

B. the mouse can better show what goes on in human with the AIDS.

C. The mouse can easily be dealt with in the controlling experiment.

D. The monkey can’t be easily infected with HIV.

50. What is the best title?

A. New research hopes to speed up development of HIV vaccine.

B. The humanized mice

C. Todd Allen and his experiment.

D. Researchers hopes to learn about elite controllers.

D

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.

Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed—no examination is perfect — but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher.

Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them--- a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he or she is suitable for the job, while the lack of certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school’s reputation, unable to compete with the child from the favored school.

The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form

of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.

51.

The word “favouritism”in paragraph 3 is used to describe the phenomenon that_____.

A. bright children also need certificates go get satisfying jobs.

B. children from well—respected schools tend to have good jobs

C. poor children with certificates are favoured in job markets

D. children attending ordinary schools achieve great success

52.

What would happen if examinations were taken away according to the author?

A. Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.

B. There would be more opportunities and excellence.

C. Children from poor families would be able to change their schools.

D.

Children’s job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation.

53. The opponents of the examination system will agree that _________.

A. jobs should not be assigned by systematic selection

B. computers should be selected to take over many jobs

C. special classed are necessary to keep the school standards

D. schools with academic subjects should be done away with

54. The passage mainly focuses on ___________.

A. schools and certificates

B. examination and equality

C. opportunity and employment

D. standards and reputation

55. The underlined word “reputation” means___.

A. successful achievement

B. good title

C. strict management

D. fame

第Ⅱ卷 ( 非选择题 )

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

My father was found to have developed hepatic(肝的) cancer in November, 2014. My older brother, Jared, suggested donating part of his liver to save our father’s life. Many people don’t realize that, unlike other organs, the liver can grow back to full size within six months. Dad was grateful but very cautious. He’s a doctor, and although he was aware of the success rate of these operations, it was hard for him to accept such an offer from his children.

When one adult donates to another adult, they have to give a larger portion of their liver than if donating to a child, so the risks are greater. But Dad has a rare blood group, and the chances of a donation from a dead body were low. Jared and I had tests and found that, against all odds, we were both compatible(兼容的). After that, we didn’t give him any choice.

Lat er it was found that 66% of Jared’s liver would be needed. At between 60% and 70%, the risk to the donor increases sharply; the surgeons were unwilling to consider hi m. I stepped forward straight away. I had the tests and discovered they’d only have to take 56% of my liver.

Once I was cleared to have the operation, a date came through very quickly--- just a fortnight later. Dad and I arrived at the hospital the night before. I remember the very nervous conversation we had, with him thanking me over and over.

The operation went very well. Both Dad and I recovered quickly. Six months on, other than the scar on my chest, I am almost back to my old self and planning an assault on Kilimanjaro to raise money for the British Liver Trust. Dad still has hepatitis(肝炎),but with his healthy new liver, we have been told he can live at least another five years --- we are confident he will last a lot longer.

I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor.

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
