1 Introduction

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) is a novelist and short story writer, who has become one of the best-known American authors of his century. He is famous for his romantic and unique artistic style all over the wo rld. Most of Hemingway?s works come from his experiences and personality. Although the characters in his works are different in age, sex and profession, they have a common ground to some extent. That?s the image of the Code Hero, including anti-war soldiers, bullfighters, anti-fascist warriors and fisherman etc. This is the glamour and most outstanding feature of his works.

A Code Hero, according to Hemingway, must have grace under pressure, should drink excessively but not sloppily, and must not talk too much, especially about his accomplishments. He must have proper social skills, such as knowing when he is unwanted and not associating with the mediocre. The Hemingway Code Hero was a well-accepted concept in its time. Hemingway had successfully created the type of character of which the readers of the time dreamed. This creation was great, one that would be appreciated for generations.

Hemingway, the writer, never gave up. In fact, The Old Man and the Sea was written at a time when critics were slamming Hemingway as being washed up and burnt out as a writer. The Old Man and the Sea seems to be Hemingway's response to these critics. Like DiMaggio and Santiago, when the going got tough and the odds were against him, Hemingway stayed in the fight --- he wrote his book. And The Old Man and the Sea remains one of Ernest Hemingway's greatest achievements. It's a story about courage and fortitude and desire and accomplishment. It tells us all how to best live our lives so that we will, in the end, have no regrets.

2 The background information

The background information is very important to study Hemingway?s code hero. It influences his attitudes towards life and his “cold hero”.

This chapter will introduce the background information from two aspects: (1) Hemingway?s perso nal background; (2) the social and cultural background.

2.1 Hemingway’s life experience

Unlucky early life gave Hemingway not depression, but courage. He began understanding life in high degree. In the summer of 1920, Hemingway moved to Chicago. He met Hadley Richardson and married her in 1921.

Ernest and Hadley lived in Chicago for a short time and then sailed for Paris, where he worked as a correspondent covering wars and fighting for the Toronto Star, a Canadian newspaper and as an assistant for an American literary magazine. But his real purpose was to write his own stories. Paris became the best place for Hemingway to develop his literary skills.

In the summer of 1923, Hemingway visited Spain and saw his life?s first b ullfight. He was interested in the sport and returned to Spain in his life many times to see bullfight. Bullfight became the important topic of several stories and books. A number of short passages describing bull fights appeared in Hemingway?s first colle ction of short stories. That year in Spain, he published his first work: Three Stories and Ten Poems. Three years later, The Sun Also Rises was published. When The Sun Also Rises first began to appear, the public readily and enthusiastically accepted it. This was partly because Hemingway had created a new type of fictional character, which is commonly called the Hemingway Code Hero. A Farewell to Arms, which was finally published in 1929, A Farewell to Arms is about the war experience and the love affairs of an American youth in Italy during World War I. In the novel, Hemingway dealt with the unity of life and death, which became one of the main themes. After this novel was published, Hemingway gains some reputation.

In 1937, he went to Spain to cover the Spanish Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance. After a few months in Spain, Hemingway announced his plan to write a book with the Spanish Civil War as its background. The result was For Whom the Bell Tolls, which announced his discovery of a social responsibility. The novel was widely known by publicly as his masterpiece. Hemingway thus became a real master with a worldwide reputation.

2.2 The social and cultural background

During the aftermath of world I, many traditional religious beliefs lost their force. Order and divine direction no longer seemed to characterize the world. In a changed situation, the task of the artist was to discover new meaning and create new forms. Modernism is appeared at that time.

Modernism is the mainstream of the colorful trends. Modernist writers are fond of expressing the depression caused by the capitalist system, modern war and mechanized civilization, distorted figures. Modernism is a new artistic view different from traditional views.

Modernism in British and American literature, which not only has some direct and inevitable connection with the social change in the 20th century, but also the writers? revolting and reforming realization against the traditional culture. But modernism is not tied by traditional criterion or certain pattern, which expresses modern thoughts and modern experiences according to its own aesthetic principles. The modernism gave greet impact on Hemingway and other writers.

3 Hemingway’s Code Hero

This chapter is going to discuss the process that Hemingway makes the image of the code hero and analyze Hemingway?s code hero?s features, and Hemingway?masterpiece the old man and the sea.The code hero teaches us to be a strong-willed man. The code hero shows human?s courage to challenge enemy and great spirits to defeat the enemy.

3.1 Hemingway's life reflected in his writing

Hemingway's personality and his experiences are his creation source. Most of Hemingway's fiction is based on his own personal experience. Whether the subject was bullfighting, big-game hunting, or battle, Hemingway was actually writing about himself. He was born in a middle-class suburb of Chicago called Oak Park. Hemingway was taught by his father to fish and hunt along the shores and in the forests when he was a little boy. When he was ten years old, he was sent a hunting gun. As a boy of fourteen, he was encouraged to practice boxing. The parts of his early life are reflected in several of the stories about young Nick Adams. The experience during World War I has been reflected in A Farewell to Arms. Then his service and own experiences as a war correspondent during Spanish Civil War produced For Whom the Bell Tolls. Hemingway also created Santiago, the perfect image of the Code Hero, which came from his experiences of fishing. This novel shows Santiago?s “undefeated” spirit. We find that fishing played an important part in Hemingway?s works. We should conduct

ourselves just like the old fisherman, Santiago, the perfect Code Hero, not be pessimistic and disappointed but to keep on struggling until we get what we want. That is, undefeated spirit is the most important.

3.2 Code heroes appeared in Hemingway’s works

Nick, the hero of In Our Time, is the one of Hemingway?s code hero. Nick is honest, when he grows up; he takes part in the war and returns home with wounds and great disappointment. Therefore, we can say that Nick lays a good foundation for the birth of Jack Barnes, who is the hero of Hemingway?s first novel--- The Sun Also Rises.Barnes loses the ability of sexual in the war so that he can?t marry his girlfriend whom he loves deeply. The more he loves her, the more pain he has. He throws himself into work actively, goes to enjoy beautiful scenery and watches bullfighting. In the end, he finds the true meaning of life. Following these two code heroes another character of antiwar and war-weariness comes into being. It is Henry; the hero of A Farewell to Arms Hemingway made considerable success on Henry. In the course of the novel Lt. Frederic Henry is wounded in World War I. The wounds reveal the nature and the ruthlessness of the war. Furthermore, it shows the bravery of Henry. However, on seeing a lot of innocent people become to die and the result of the war will not benefit any participants, Henry has every reason to put down his arms, say goodbye to the war and take his own way. So he does not fight for his country, or any other, any more and escapes to Switzerland with his lover, Catherine Barkley, to seek peace. Obviously, Henry is perfect. Henry takes action and escapes after he realizes the war is no value. But in a whole, the Code Hero at the early stage lacks the aim of life. They have the qualities of a hero; however, they are far away from heroism.

The masterpiece is For Whom the Bell Tolls; the Code Hero is Robert Jordan, who is fighting as an American volunteer in the Spanish Civil War. From this novel we can conclude that Hemingway has a leap in the process of his cognition. He has come to see the wisdom of such a sacrifice, and the book ends without bitterness. The Code Hero?s attitude of facing death is that life is worth living and that there are causes worth dying for.

Hemingway creates the perfect image of the Code Hero, Santiago, and the hero of The Old Man and the Sea, which regained significantly in reputation and won for him the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. This novel tells about an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago. This story not only praises the fight among human, nature and fate but also indicates tha t Hemingway?s Code Hero gets to its summit. We should appreciate the perfect image of the Code Hero in the last and most important works of Hemingway.

3.3 Code hero reflected in The Old Man and the Sea

For eighty-four days old Santiago has not caught a single fish. This is a long time for a fisherman to catch no fish. The old man has nothing in his humble shack to eat but still he refuses to borrow or beg or even acknowledge this humiliating fact. Here is the Code Hero's honor in action in spite of dire necessity.

Another factor, which illustrates fully the essence of the Code Hero, is Santiago?s supreme courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Courage itself is a relative value. This is a value that grows out of man's essential being, out of his inner nature. Santiago, for example, has long years of practical knowledge about fishing and about the sea and he has practiced self-discipline for many years. He can depend on no one but himself when he is fat out, battling marlin. He does not panic when he has no food; he renews his strength by eating the raw repugnant tuna. Nor does he panic when his hand cramps; he curses it and uses it as best he can. It seems that that Santiago's courage increases as he is tested by the fish and by the liabilities of his old age. With his strength gone and his mental powers diminishing with old age, the old man?s fight with the great fish assumes the role of a supreme test of his greatness. His courage is echoed in his simple words: “Fish…I?ll stay with you until I am dead.” He has hooked the biggest fish he has ever seen or heard of; consequently, it was to be the greatest test of his skill. This naturally involves a great deal of suffering on the part of the code hero and the great pain that that Santiago endures serves to emphasize the strength of his character. He endures his suffering without complaint, and he does not even “admit the suffering at all,” as he tells himself that “pain does not matter to a man ” and that he will show the fish “what a man can do and what a man endures”. This endurance under pain is one of the characteristics that make Santiago stand out as a noble heroic character.

Santiago maintains his dignity in his action and displays heroism as a code hero with his undefeated spirit when he lost in the fight. Yet his friendship with Manolin exposes much of the warmth in his personality. His faithfulness and passion can always be expressed through actions. When he is alone out in the sea he frequently talks of the little boy Manolin, and we know that he is in need of help and friendship. However Santiago?s character is not without its flaws. For example, he allows the conversation on the non-existent rice and the caster to go on between the little boy and him. And such illusionary talking exposes his irrationality.

Santiago?s life is simple but not wretched. He is humble but not low. In his action there is always dignity and self-respect. In Santiago Hemingway places his understanding and confidence in humanity. No matter what kind of plight one is in and no ma tter how high one?s social position, what is most important is to maintain one?s

dignity as a human being. And such dignity should not fluctuate with changes in wealth and turnings of luck, as it is a necessary part of humanity. Young pointed out it is the height that Hemingway himself could reach and is therefore the very success of his story: The knowledge that a simple man is capable of the decency, dignity, and even heroism that Santiago possesses and that his battle can be seen in heroic terms is itself perhaps the greatest victory that Hemingway won.

4 Conclusion

From what we have discussed above, we can safely come to a conclusion that, Hemingway?s own personality and rich life experiences make him create these immortal works. He expresses what to love and what to hate through the Code Hero, who shows human?s courage to challenge the situation and Great Spirit to defeat the …enemy?.

He?s a good writer, Hemingway. He writes as he is. He?s a big, powerful peasant, as strong as a buffalo, a sportsman, and ready to live the life he writes about. He would never have it if his body had not allowed him to live it. But giants of his sort are truly modest; there is much more behind Hemingway?s form than people know.

The pressure throughout Hemingway?s life was very great. It was so great that he himself even could not afford it. So he shot himself to end his life. However, during his lifetime, especially the time he met troubles, he never gave up easily. Hemingway was proud of his manhood, his capacity for drink, and his talents as a fisherman. He believed in art, in sport and in nature. All these gave Hemingway courage. For him, life itself was nothing more than an unpredictable feast of the senses. His philosophy is both stoic and existential: one should not complain.

In the general situation of his novel, life is full of tension and battles; the world is in chaos; man is always fighting desperately a losing battle. However, though life is but a losing battle, it is a struggle man can dominate in such a way that loss becomes dignity; man can be physically destroyed but never defeated spiritually. Hemingway?s end was not a happy one, but the end of a person?s life does not judge a writer. Hemingway?s life was filled with death and violence, which gave Hemingway deep pain both physically and mentally, though in some aspects, they benefited him by teaching him priceless philosophies. However, Hemingway gained a worldwide reputation and great success, which was mostly due to his talent and his courage.

“the way+从句”结构的意义及用法

“theway+从句”结构的意义及用法 首先让我们来看下面这个句子: Read the followingpassageand talkabout it wi th your classmates.Try totell whatyou think of Tom and ofthe way the childrentreated him. This is thewayhowithappened. This is the way how he always treats me. 2. 由此我们得到theway后接定语从句时的三种模式:1) the way+that-从句2)the way +in which-从句3) the way +从句 例如:The way(in which ,that) thesecomrade slookatproblems is wrong.

Theway(that ,in which)you’re doingit is comple tely crazy. Weadmired him for theway inwhich he facesdifficulties. Wallace and Darwingreed on the way inwhi ch different forms of life had begun. This is the way(that) hedid it. I likedthe way(that) sheorganized the meeting. 3.theway(that)有时可以与how(作“如何”解)通用。 That’s the way(that) shespoke. = That’s how shespoke.

way 用法

Do it (in) your own way. Please do not talk (in) that way. It’s the best way of studying [to study] English. There are different ways to do [of doing] it. I don’t like the way he spoke. 正:I don’t like the way that he spoke. 正:I don’t like the way in which he spoke. 误:I don’t like the way how he spoke. 4. That’s the way (=how) he spoke. Nobody else loves you the way(=as) I do. The way (=According as) you are studying now, you won’tmake much progress. 2007年陕西省高考英语中有这样一道单项填空题: ——I think he is taking an active part insocial work. ——I agree with you_____. A、in a way B、on the way C、by the way D、in the way 此题答案选A。 In a way he was right. 注:in a way也可说成in one way。 二、on the way的用法 1、表示:即将来(去),就要来(去)。如: Spring is on the way. I'd better be on my way soon. Radio forecasts said a sixth-grade wind was on the way. He stopped for breakfast on the way. We had some good laughs on the way. She has two children with another one on the way. She's got five children, and another one is on the way. 三、by the way的用法

In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted. No one knows the way he invented the machine. He did not do the experiment the way his teacher told him. the way 的意思相当于as。在In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted.这句话中,the way也是as的含义。 1. the way+ in which +从句 I like the way in which she smiles. 2. the way+ that +从句 I like the way that she smiles. 3. the way + 从句(省略了in which或that) I like the way she smiles. 1. There were several theories about the way in which the fire started. 2. There were several theories about the way that the fire started.

way 的用法

way 的用法 【语境展示】 1. Now I’ll show you how to do the experiment in a different way. 下面我来演示如何用一种不同的方法做这个实验。 2. I don’t know the way (that / in which) he helped her out. 我不知道他用什么方法帮助她摆脱困境的。 5. The way (that / which) he talked about to solve the problem was difficult to understand. 他所谈到的解决这个问题的方法难以理解。 6. I don’t like the way that / which is being widely used for saving water. 我不喜欢这种正在被广泛使用的节水方法。 7. They did not do it the way we do now. 他们以前的做法和我们现在不一样。 【归纳总结】 ●way作“方法,方式”讲时,如表示“以……方式”,前面常加介词in。如例1; ●way作“方法,方式”讲时,其后可接不定式to do sth.,也可接of doing sth. 作定语,表示做某事的方法。如例2,例3;

“the-way+从句”结构的意义及用法知识讲解

“the way+从句”结构的意义及用法 首先让我们来看下面这个句子: Read the following passage and talk about it with your classmates. Try to tell what you think of Tom and of the way the children treated him. This is the way how it happened. This is the way how he always treats me. 2. 由此我们得到the way后接定语从句时的三种模式:1) the way +that-从句2) the way +in which-从句3) the way +从句 例如:The way(in which ,that) these comrades look at problems is wrong.

The way(that ,in which)you’re doing it is completely crazy. We admired him for the way in which he faces difficulties. Wallace and Darwin greed on the way in which different forms of life had begun. This is the way (that) he did it. I liked the way (that) she organized the meeting. 3.the way(that)有时可以与how(作“如何”解)通用。 That’s the way (that) she spoke. = That’s how she spoke. I should like to know the way/how you learned to master the fundamental technique within so short a time.
