四:阅读理解(共16小题,每小题2分;满分32分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Too often we accuse others of not listening, pretending that we ourselves are faultless, yet in our hearts we know that many of the mistakes we make come about because we haven’t listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we haven’t listened carefully enough.W e get things wrong because we haven’t quite understood what someone meant when they were talking to us.Anyone who has ever taken the minutes of a long meeting will know how hard it is to remember---despite the benefit of notes---exactly what everyone said. But success depends on getting things right---and that means listening.

Listening is not the same thing as hearing; it is not an effort actively. It demands attention and concentration. It may mean quizzing the speaker for additional information or for clarification---it is always better to ask than to continue regardless and get things wrong. However, if you allow your mind to wander onto something else, even for a few minutes, you’ll miss what the speaker is saying---probably at the very moment when he or she is saying something critical. And not having heard, you won’t know you’ve missed anything until it’s too late.

The most common bad habit we have is to start thinking of what we are going to say about the subject long before the other speaker has finished. We then stop listening.Even worse, this often adds rudeness to inattentiveness, as once you have decided what to say there is a fair chance you will interrupt to say it.Good listeners don’t interrupt. In fact it is often worth explaining the main idea of what you have just been told before going on to make your own points.Nobody is offended by this and it shows that you have listened well.

Above all be patient and accept that many people are not very good communicators. It’s helpful to remember that the way s people move and position themselves while they are speaking can reveal a great deal about what they are saying.Equally important you should put yourself in the other person’s place, both intellectually and emotionally; it will help you to understand what they are getting at and form a response. But don’t be too clever.Faced with a know-all, many people keep quiet because they see no point in continuing.41.Which is the best title for this passage?

A.Don’t be too clever B.Be a good listener.

C.Don’t miss anything critical D.Think of the speaker

42.In the last paragraph, ―… what they are getting at …‖ means ______.

A.what they imply B.what they like

C.what they attack D.what they achieve

43.What is the writer’s opinion?

A.If you want to be a good listener, you should be very clever and emotional.

B.Speakers won’t continue talking when their listeners explain what they’ve hear D.

C.If you don’t want to get things wrong, it’s important to be a good listener.

D.It’s hard to be a good listener because li stening tests you on your intelligence.

44.What is the lesson we can learn from this passage?

A.Don’t accuse others of not listening while talking with them.

B.Don’t get anything wrong if you miss what the speaker is saying.

C.Listening inattentively may cost you the loss of your success.

D.Think carefully of what you’re going to say before the speaker finishes.

B

There are many ways of defining success. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own concept of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that

we must define success broadly.

For some people, simply being able to live their life with a minimum of misery and suffering is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his frugal (简朴的) life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of and accepted by him and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own goals of success. Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-confidence it would be unfortunate to set one’s goa ls at too low a level of achievement.

A wise counselor once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration with his own professional success: ―You do not hav e to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park, or riding the subway downtown,‖ The counselor added, ―You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for su ccess until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort.‖

45. In the first paragraph, the author implies that ________are essential in achieving success .

A. ability and goals

B. goals and determination

C. ability and environment

D. goals and environment

46.Some rich people consider themselves unsuccessful because .

A. their life is miserable

B. they do not live in peace

C. their goals are too low

D. they are not rich enough by their own standards

47.The last paragraph implies that__________.

A. we should have high goals

B. success means achieving great goals

C. success means taking a walk in the park

D. success means trying one’s best at what one really likes

48.This passage mainly talks about__________ .

A. the definition of success

B. how to achieve success

C. how to set goals

D. the importance of goals

C

When she was a girl of sixteen and before she began to work in the store, Alice had dated a young man. The young man, named Ned Currie, was older than Alice. He was employed on the local newspaper and for a long time he went to see Alice almost every evening. Together the two walked under the trees through the streets of the town and talked of what they would do with their lives. Alice was then a very pretty girl and one night Ned took her into his arms and kissed her. He became excited and said things he did not intend to say and Alice, betrayed by her desire to have something beautiful come into her narrow life, also grew excited. She also talked. The outer crust(壳) of her life, all of her natural shyness and reserve, was torn away and she gave herself over to the emotions of love.

When, late in the fall, Ned went away to Cleveland to try to get a place on a city newspaper and rise in the world, she wanted to go with him. With a trembling voice she told him what was in her mind. ― I will work and you can work,‖ she said. ― I don’t w ant to tie you to a needless expense that will stop you making progress. Don’t marry me now. We’ll get along without that and we can be together. Even though we live in the same house, no one will say anything. In the city we’ll be unknown and people will pay no attention to us.‖Ned was puzzled by his sweetheart’s determination and was also deeply touched. He h ad wanted a girlfriend just to relieve the boredom of his life but had changed his mind. He now wanted to protect her and care for her. ―You don’t know what you’re talk ing about,‖ he said sharply, ― I’ll let you do no such thing. As soon as I get a good job, I’ll come back. For the present you’ll have to stay here. It’s the only thing we can do.

On the evening before he left Winesburg, Ned went to call on Alice. They walked about through the streets for an hour and then went for a drive in the country. The moon came up and they found themselves unable to talk. They stopped at a place where a long meadow ran down to the bank of Wine Creek and there in the dim light he kissed her and promised he would love her forever. When they returned to town, it did not seem to them that anything in the future could blot (拭去)out the wonder and beauty of that evening. ― Now we will have to stick to each other; whatever happens, we will have to do that,‖ Ned said as he left the girl at her father’s door.

He did not succeed in getting a place on a Cleveland newspaper and went west to Chicago. For a time he was lonely and wrote to Alice almost every day. Then he was caught up by the life of the city; he began to make friends and found new interests in life. In Chicago he boarded at a house where there were several women. One of them attracted his attention and he forgot Alice in Winesburg. At the end of a year he had stopped writing letters, and only once in a long time, when he was lonely or when he went into one of the city parks and saw the moon shining on the grass as it had shone that night on the meadow by Wine Creek, did he think of her at all.

Possible version:

Boys and girls:

We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can rid of them correctly and wisely.

First, some of us are upset about their body styles and looks. It’s unnecessary and it’s not important at all. We needn’t car e about it. It is one’s inner beauty that matters. Besides of that, we sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers, parents and cl assmates. Facing this, we can find a proper time to have a heart—to—heart talk with them, trying to remove the misunderstanding. Some of us have fewer friends. I think being open—minded and friendly will do you good. Third, we may fall behind others, which makes us stressed. Actually we can encourage ourselves to work efficiently, full of determination.

That’s all. Thank you.
