Today we all join together. You can send an e-mail message to a friend, and your friend can send it to one of his or her friends, and that friend can do the same, keeping the chain going. At last, your e-mail message c an get to anyone in the world, and it might take only five to seven e-mails for the message to get there.

Scientists tested(测试) the idea in a study of about 24,000 people. The participants(参与者) had to try to send a message to one of 18 target(目标) people. Each participant started by sending one e-mail to someone they knew. After this person got the e-mail, he or she could send it once to someone they knew, and so on.

The target people lived in 13 countries, including police officers, doctors and teachers.

Of 24,000 people, only 384 reached their target. The others failed usually because one of the receivers(接收者) was too busy to send it or thought it was junk message.

The most successful chains depended on people e-mailing their common(普通的) friends but not their best friends. That’s because your close friends only know each other, but your common friends know people you don’t know.
