第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)

It is reported that the Ebola virus has returned to Africa. The virus causes a disease called Ebola hemorrhagic (出血的) fever. The Ebola virus affects animals and people. It killed more than 200 people in the former Zaire in 1995. This year, the Ebola virus has killed more than 150 people in Uganda.

The Ebola virus kills so quickly that the body’s defense system has no time to act against it. The disease kills fifty to ninety percent of the people it infects (感染). The disease begins with high body temperature, severe headache and muscle hurting. Then it causes severe bleeding and organ failure. Then the victim dies. Doctors say a person with the Ebola virus usually dies within three weeks after becoming infected. The disease spreads by people touching the body fluids of an infected person.

No medicine or treatment now exists for the disease. Recently, however, American researchers announced progress in developing a medicine to prevent Ebola hemorrhagic fever in monkeys. The scientists gave eight monkeys a small but deadly amount of the Ebola virus. They gave an experimental vaccine (疫苗) to only four of them. The monkeys that did not receive the vaccine died within a week. The vaccine prevented the disease from developing in the four monkeys that received it. All the four monkeys were healthy six months later.

The researchers said this was the first time a vaccine had protected animals similar to humans from the deadly Ebola virus. They will continue to test the vaccine on animals by giving them increasingly strong amounts of the virus.

56. The first symptom of Ebola hemorrhagic fever is ______.

A. high body temperature

B. serious bleeding

C. severe body hurting

D. organ failure

57. The Ebola virus can cause death quickly mainly because _________.

58. From the passage we can learn that _________.

A. the Ebola virus was originally found in Africa

B. progress in finding a vaccine to prevent the Ebola virus has been made

59. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Monkeys are similar to humans in how a vaccine affects them.

B. The researchers directly tested the vaccine on people.

C. Half of all moneys injected with the vaccine died six months later.

D. The researchers gave the monkeys a large amount of the Ebola virus.

Sweden is a nation full of newspaper and magazine readers. Nearly 90 percent of the nine million adults in the country read at least one newspaper a day, putting Sweden near the top of worldwide print media consumption (消费). Metro, the largest and fastest growing international newspaper in the world, was launched in Sweden in 1995.

From being just famous in Stockholm, the free daily newspaper, Metro, has exported its concept internationally. There are now 55 daily editions of Metroavailable around the world in nearly 70 cities across Europe, North and South America and Asia.

Metrois available in 15 languages: Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Spanish, and Swedish.

The papers are available on weekdays, mainly to commuters (上下班往返的人) in busy areas such as public transport stations.

Metroeditions are full of short articles, so that the newspaper can be read in 20 minutes.

In Sweden, the newspaper has 1.1 million readers. This makes Metro’s readership nearly twice that of the second biggest selling newspaper in the country!

The newspaper has managed to attract a young, well-educated audience in the cities where it is published, and the majority of its readers are under the age of 45.

For advertisers who want to communicate with this target group, an ad in Metrocosts them a lot of money. Many have moved their accounts from the traditional daily press to this free paper.

Metrorelies almost only on the money it takes from advertising to fund its operations around the globe.

Reduce, reuse, and recycle. This familiar environmentalist slogan tells us how to reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfills and waterways. The concept is being used to deal with one possibly dangerous form of waste —electronic junk (电子垃圾), such as old computers, cellphones, and televisions. But this process for managing e-waste may be used in an unscrupulous way more often than not used, a recent report suggests.

“A lot of these materials are being sent to developing nations under the excuse of reuse — to bridge the digital divide,” said Richard Gutierrez, a policy researcher.

One of the problems is that no one proves whether these old machines work before they hit the seaways. Because of this, the report says, e-waste is a growing problem in Lagos, Nigeria, and elsewhere in the developing world. Much of the waste ends up being thrown away along rivers and roads. Often i t’s picked apart by poor people, who may face dangerous exposure to poisonous chemicals in the equipment.

Businessmen also pay workers a little money to get back materials such as gold and copper. This low-tech recovery process could expose workers and the local environment to many dangerous materials used to build electronics. According to Gutierrez, this shadow economy exists because the excuse of recycling and reusing electronics gives businessmen “a green passport” to ship waste around the globe. “D eveloping nations must take upon some of the responsibility themselves,” Gutierrez said. But, he added, “A greater portion of this responsibility should fall on the exporting state.”

China, for example, has become a dumping place for large amounts of e-waste. The nation is beginning to take action to stop the flow of dangerous materials across its borders. The Chinese government, after many years of denial (否认), is finally beginning to take the lead.

64. The passage mainly tells us that _______.

Recent studies of some of nature’s environmental “records” show that global warming can penetrate deep into the ocean faster than scientists have realized.

The record keepers are foraminifera —“forams” for short — creatures so small that several could sit together on a pinhead. Their shells reflect the environmental conditions under which they grow. The foram record includes a global warming event that provides a warning for our own times. Although it occurred 55 million years ago, scientists consider it useful for studying the causes and results of our own global warming.

The key finding is that the earth is a system that can change very rapidly. The climate change at that time involved a large rise in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane (甲烷). Although there was no human input, this is another example of the important role such gases play in climate change.

There also seems to have been a large release of methane from the seabed when frozen methane stored there were thawed out by the warming. This is a danger in our own times.

“What this tells us is that the changes that we make to th e earth today could lead to big changes to our planet,” Nunes, a scientist, explained in NATURE.

Meanwhile, David Field, another researcher has found evidence that global warming is beginning to penetrate the ocean today. Field and his group looked at foram records off southern California for the past 1,400 years. Those records show great climate changes, decade by decade. Nevertheless, the 20th century stands out. They record great changes in small animal and plant species with cold-loving forms giving way to warmer-water types. “These results show that the 20th-century warming has already affected lower tropic levels of the California Current,” they reported.

69. Scientists study the life of “forams” in the sea because _______.

A. they are the smallest living things in the sea

B. they have been living for almost 55 million years

C. they can reveal environmental problems

D. they can make global warming more serious

70. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to ____.

A. encourage people to find solutions to all the problems of the earth

B. introduce the present conditions of the sea

C. blame people for their activities that cause global warming

D. warn people against the serious effect of global warming

71. From the passage we can infer that _______.

A. a large amount of methane has been frozen and stored in the seabed

B. the rise of greenhouse gases is the result of human activities

C. scientists have found out the causes and results of global warming

D. people don’t believe that the earth is a sys tem that changes very quickly

72. What is the best title of the passage?

A. The earth can warm up fast.

B. The earth will move around the sun faster.

C. The earth will cool in the future.

D. The earth could break up into pieces.

I was born when my father and mother were on their way to Nash, a lonely place where they were to meet with hardships and difficulties. They both liked this area very much, which might explain why they moved from Missouri to such a town in western Kansas. They did most of their shopping in Nash, but before Nash was built, they shopped at the little town of Moran, where there was a small grocery store.

I remember when the railroad came to Nash, when the first telephones came, and the first cars. We lived six miles from the town so we missed out on meeting the trains. My mother was sick when I was young, so I did a lot of household chores, even doing the laundry, as I was the oldest, but I never worked outside with my five brothers. I remember going to school with my brothers. When we played basketball, we played outside, and the girls wore skirts and bloomers, and got along fine. I liked spelling matches, and we competed with other schools once or twice a month.

I married Herm Messenger, a farmer in 1971. Eleven children were born to us, four boys and seven girls; four were dead at birth. There was one pair of twins, Paul and Pauline, however, Pauline died when she was nineteen months old. My first washing machine was operated by hand by pushing the handle back and forth. Later, I got a machine with an electric motor. My first machine with a wringer (压汁机) was a joke, as Herm took it to the church, and put it on the Christmas tree for me. That might not be exciting to a housewife today, but I thought it was!

73. From the passage we can learn that the writer’s parents _________.

A. had the first child unexpectedly

B. liked Missouri very much

C. had a hard time in Nash

D. had to shop a great deal

74. From Paragraph 2 we can learn that the author _____.

A. saw for herself the first trains, the first telephones and the first cars

B. played, worked and went to school with her brothers

C. did a lot of household chores when she was young

D. often won the spelling matches when at school

75. In the last paragraph the author suggests that ______.

A. the way her husband put the wringer on a tree was funny

B. she was excited when she received the wringer from her husband

C. her husband was fond of playing jokes on her

D. her first washing machine was electrically run

Text10

Kelsey Ryan managed to do something that most 9-year-old kids don’t usually do: she helped change a state law.

She has a serious disease that could kill her, so she carries a large medical device everywhere. The device has a needle that she can use to inject herself. A lot of schools don’t allow children to carry such large medical devices, but because of Kelsey, that’s about to change. “I feel good and excited tha t the device won’t be taken away from me.” The governor in Florida made it a law. It lets children who suffer from that kind of disease carry special medical devices at school.

“I am greatly moved. This beautiful girl, this precious girl, came and show ed me how she injected herself to save her life. And now that will be available not only in her school and her district, but across the state.” After the governor signed the new law this year, Kelsey sent some of her photos to him. It’s estimated that 100,000 children in Florida will benefit from this new law, which will take effect at the beginning of next year.

Dear Liu Li,

I’m very glad to have received your email and I’m sorry to have heard of your problem.

You said that you felt guilty about your secret that your English teacher gave you another ten extra marks by mistake and you didn’t tell him. I understand you. But we must be honest and frank to ourselves. So you’d better tell your teacher and face the mistake. I think your teacher will be able to put himself in your shoes.

That is the first thing you should do. The more important thing is to achieve real success. Not only should you make good use of your class time and spare time, but also you should be strict with yourself and never give up. Don’t you think so? Such are my suggestions. I hope they are helpful.

Yours,
