五、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

If you are planning to study in the United States, you need to consider several factors. Everyone has different opinions about where is the best place to live in. Also, the best places to live in are not always home to the best schools. Finally, many schools specialize in different areas of study. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院),for example, is a great school for computer science and technology-related fields of study. However, if you want to study oceanography(海洋学),your interests may be better served by attending school in a place that is on a coastline or near the ocean.

Now I am sure that you know which schools are considered the best in the country. So I will tell you about which states I believe are the best to live in.

California is a nice state. Northern California specifically has very good weather. Los Angeles in Southern California is another story though. Life in Los Angeles is full of excitement and fast, and sometimes dangerous. As for me, I enjoy the time I spent in Massachusetts, Virginia and Maryland and these states have a lot of history and culture. The weather is not as perfect as Northern California, but it is still quite nice. My favorite area of America is the Mid-west. Middle America, I think, is home to the true American sense of values. In addition, there are many good universities there.

Also, you need to think about your likes and dislikes and then research the various states. You like sunshine and hate snow? Then you probably won't like the Midwest or even the Northeast. Open space, nature and peace and quiet? Then you probably should stay away from America's large cities. Are you interested in government? Then Washington D.C. is the only place for you. Whatever you decide, put some thought into it. The place you live in could be the difference between a great study-abroad experience and a state of great suffering on earth.

51.From the first paragraph we can conclude that in the USA _____.

A. all colleges and universities lie in big cities

B. all colleges and universities lie in beautiful places

C. famous colleges and universities lie in nice places

D. famous colleges and universities may not lie in nice places

52. What, according to the writer, should be considered first if you want to study in the USA?

A. The climate.

B. The scenery.

C. The study condition

D. The living condition.

53.From the third paragraph we can find that _____.

A. California is the best place to live in

B. California is the worst place to live in

C. California is a state with different climates

D. California is a small state in the USA

54.If you study in Middle America, you can probably _____.

A.find the best universities

B. feel the real character of the nation

C.meet the most famous professors there

D. face more difficulties

55.From the last paragraph of this passage we can get to know that _____ .

A. Washington is the largest city in the USA

B. Washington D.

C. is the political centre of the USA

C. you can't find sunshine in the Midwest

D. you can't find any universities out of big cities in the USA

All parents know that one of their most important tasks is to prepare their children for an independent life, but any parent can tell you that it’s hard to let go of your children. That balance between keeping your children safe and allowing them to learn from their own mistakes can be heartbreaking. Years of experience means that parents often do know best, but on the other hand, the young, being less bound by tradition, are often more creative, more able to find new solutions to old problems. Revolutions are led by the young.

Good teachers make the growth of critical thinking easier in their students, only to find that this can lead to a questioning of the teachers’ basic beliefs. Schools encourage parents to become involved, but are often embarrassed when parents have reservations about some of the educational methods being used. Governments encourage unimportant groups to empower(授权)themselves in order to participate fully in the development process. And they are often surprised when the new leaders of these groups turn around and attack the policies of that same government. The rebellious (叛逆的)young and the newly unimportant groups are important in social development. They are not necessarily representatives of those they want to represent or not realistic in their demands, but their voices must be heard.

Good parents know that just forbidding particular behaviors does not prevent their children from finding ways to engage in these forbidden activities. Indeed, sometimes the forbidden fruit is more inviting, just because it is not accepted by authority. Parents must work with their children to educate them on the facts, know as much as possible about the lives of their children, provide a good example, encourage more wholesome activities but also support their children when they don’t follow what is expected of them. But the most important point is that they also need to learn how to let go.

56.By saying ―Revolutions are led by the young‖, the author indicates that young people are more .

A.conventional B.realistic C.creative D.heartbreaking 57.From the second paragraph we know .

A.teachers’ basic beliefs should be questioned by students

B.schools encourage parents to question their education methods

C.movement is satisfied with the new leaders’ attack on the policies

D.the voice of the rebellious young should be heard by the government

58.In order to educate children well, parents should .

A.forbid particular behaviors in their daily life

B.know them well and set a good example to them

C.educate them with facts and expect much of them

D.know as much as possible as their children

59.From the passage we can learn that the author prefers .

A.free parenting B.traditional parenting

C.critical parenting D.smart parenting

60.What is the best title of the passage?

A.Letting Go –for Children’s Independent Life

B.Parents’ Tasks –in Children’s Development

C.Way of Growth – for the Young Groups

D.Teaching Methods – for Teachers and Schools

Today, bicycles are elegantly simple machines that are common around the world. Many people ride bicycles for recreation, whereas others use them as a means of transportation. The first bicycle was invented in Germany in 1818. Because it was made of wood, it wasn’t very strong nor did it have pedals .Riders moved it by pushing their feet against the ground.

In 1839, Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a Scottish blacksmith, invented a much better bicycle. Macmillan’s machine had iron-covered wheels to keep them from getting worn down. He also used foot-operated levers, similar to pedals, so his bicycle could be ridden at a quick pace. It di dn’t look much like the modern bicycle, though, because its back wheel was substantially larger than its front wheel. Although Macmillan’s bicycles could be ridden easily, they were never produced in large numbers.

In 1861, Frenchman Pierre Michaux and his brother Ernest invented a bicycle with an improved pedal mechanism. They called their bicycle a velocipede, but most people called it a ―bone shaker‖ because of the effect of the wood and iron frame. Despite the impolite nickname, the velocipede was a hit. After a few years, the Michaux family was making hundreds of the machines annually, mostly for fun-seeking young people.

Ten years later, James Starley, an English inventor, made several innovations that revolutionized bicycle design. He made the front wheel many times larger than the back wheel, put a gear on the pedals to make the bicycle more efficient, and lightened the wheels by using wire spokes(车轮上幅条). Although this bicycle was much lighter and less tiring to ride, it was still clumsy, extremely top-heavy, and ridden mostly for entertainment.

It wasn’t until 1874 that the first truly modern bicycle appeared on the scene. Invented by another Englishman, H. J. Lawson, the safety bicycle would look familiar to today’s cyclists. The safety bicycle had equal-sized wheels, which made it easier to ride. Lawson also attached a chain to the pedals to drive the back wheel. By 1893,the safety bicycle had been further improved with air-filled rubber tires, a diamond-shaped frame, and easy braking. With the improvements provided by Lawson bicycles became extremely popular and useful for transportation. Today, they are built, used, and enjoyed all over the world.

In the kitchen of my mother's houses there has always been a wooden stand with a small notepad and a hole for a pencil.

I'm looking for paper on which to note down the name of a book I am recommending to my mother. Over forty years since my earliest memories of the kitchen pad and pencil, five houses later, the current paper and pencil look the same as they always did. Surely it can't be the same pencil. The pad is more modern, but the wooden stand is definitely the original one.

"I'm just amazed you still have the same stand for holding the pad and pencil after all these years." I say to her, walking back into the living-room with a sheet of paper and the pencil. "You still use a pencil. Can't you afford a pen?"

My mother replies a little sharply, "It works perfectly well. I've always kept the stand in the kitchen. I never knew when I might want to note down an idea, and I was always in the kitchen in these days.‖

Immediately I can picture her, hair wild, blue housecoat covered in flour, a wooden spoon in one hand, the pencil in the other, her mouth moving silently. My mother smiles and says, "One day I was cooking and watching baby Pauline, and I had a brilliant thought, but the stand was empty. One of the children must have taken the paper. So I just picked up the breadboard and wrote it all

down on the back. It turned out to be a real breakthrough for solving the mathematical problem I was working on."

This story, which happened before I was born, reminds me how extraordinary my mother was, and is also a gifted mathematician. I feel embarrassed that I complain about not having enough child-free time to work. Later, when my mother is in the bathroom, I go into her kitchen and turn over the breadboards. Sure enough, on the back of the smallest one, are some penciled marks I recognize as mathematics. Those symbols have traveled unaffected through fifty years, rooted in the soil of a cheap wooden breadboard, invisible exhibits at every meal.

A. blaming her mother wrongly

B. giving her mother a lot of trouble

七、写作(满分25分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Today I’d like to talk about a great film I recently saw called The Time Machine. It really made a deep impression.

The film is about a young inventor called Dr. Alexander who spends four years of his life building a time travelling machine so he can go back in time and save his murdered sweetheart, Emma.

That film really fired my imagination and made me think about where I would go if

I could travel back through time. At first I thought I would travel to the time of the dinosaurs to see the T-Rex and all those other huge and savage beasts. But perhaps that would be a little too dangerous. I don’t just want to go back in time ,I want to return safely too. Then I thought about a really great moment in history that I would love to experience. The time I’d like to travel to is 1936 and the place I’d like to go to is Germany. I’d love to be a part of the audience at the Berlin Olympics hel d that year and see the great American athlete Jessie Owens win four gold medals in front of the evil German leader Adolf Hitler. That was one of the greatest ever sporting performances and it was even more important because it showed the world how wrong H itler’s ideas were. Then I would try to meet Mr. Owens and tell him how famous he would become in the future. Maybe I could even have a photo taken with him as proof.

读写任务Version one:

The author introduces the film "The Time Machine", in which the hero invents a time travelling machine. He also imagines where he would go if he could travel through time.

(Or: In the film "The Time Machine", the main character invents a time machine, which interests the author who describes where he would go if he could travel through time.) After reading about this film, I imagined where I would go if I could travel through time.

Personally, I would travel to Tiananmen Square in Beijing on Oct. lst, 1949. It would be exciting to witness the historic moment when the People's Republic of China was founded. If I were lucky enough to have the opportunity, I would interview Chairman Mao and other revolutionary pioneers, telling them how brilliant they were and showing them our gratitude for the new life they brought us. I would also take pictures to record how people lived at that time.

After I returned, I would show those photos to people I know, reminding them of the hardship in the past, so that they would cherish what they possess now and be more positive toward life. Hopefully, what I brought back would inspire people today to follow the example set by those pioneers and contribute more to developing our society and building a better world.

Version two:

The writer dreams about time travelling after he watches the movie the Time Machine, a story about an inventor who builds a time machine to save his sweetheart's life.

If I were fortunate enough to be able to travel back to the past, I would like to visit Chang An City during the Tang Dynasty. This is because the Tang Dynasty is a shining pearl in Chinese history. Many people believe it was during this period that China reached its cultural peak, with outstanding literature, the invention of new technology, expanding foreign trade and the development of new religions. As a Chinese student, how I wish I could witness the life at that time, the peaceful, beautiful and joyful life there.

Leading such a life appeals me. It would be a challenge to discover if I could survive in ancient times, to find out what skills I possessed and how I could use them to earn a living. I also hope I would discover some of the ancient values such as respect and morality, which I fear have become less important in our modern world.
