四。阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

A

Japanese students work very hard but many of them are unhappy. They feel great pressure from their parents to do well in school or in college. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a successful future. Although this may be good advice for those students who are very bright, it can cause very bad results for many students who are not good enough at studying. Unfortunately, a number of students actually kill themselves. Others seek comfort in using drugs. Some students, however, do bad things with groups of bad people and turn to crime. Many of them have tried very hard at school but, in spite of their effort, have failed some examinations and disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important than everyone else they meet and leave school before they have finished their study.

It is surprising that although most Japanese parents are anxious for their children to do well at school, they don’t help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are unable to help their children with their lessons and that it is their teachers’ job to help their children.

To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku-cram schools. These schools are open during the evening and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams. They don’t try to educate students in any real sense of the word. It thus shouldn’t come as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior high school population attend these cram schools.

Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the length of students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psychologist now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that such students are not given guidance nor training in becoming good citizens.

56. According to the passage, a lot of Japanese students are unhappy in school because they ___.

A. work too hard

B. find they cannot do well in school

D. are under too much pressure

57. Because of their failure at school, some students _________.

A. go to cram school for better education

B.leave school without finishing their study

C.are against the school rules

D.have quarrels with their parents

58. In the third paragraph, cram school probably means the schools in which ____.

A.you can be taken good care of by the teachers

B.teachers are responsible

C.you learn as much as possible in a short time before taking the exam

D.students have their classes in the evening

59. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.A lot of parents in Japan help their children with their studies.

B. Cram schools cannot provide a good education for their children.

C. A lot of parents in Japan encourage their children to study hard.

D.Many students become criminals because of their failure.

Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday of November each year. The holiday tradition is eating turkey. Some of the birds will be fried in oil or barbecued over hot coals. Most will be cooked in the oven.

Most farm-raised turkeys grow quickly. In fourteen weeks, a female turkey weighs seven kilograms and is ready for market. Hens are usually sold as whole birds. Male turkeys, or toms, are usually grown for eighteen weeks. They weigh more than fourteen kilograms. Toms are processed for meat products.

Some farms have started to raise what are called heritage turkeys. These more traditional birds take longer to raise and require more care. Some can be ordered over the Internet. The meat is at least four times the cost of other turkey. Often, heritage turkeys are raised on organic farms, where no chemicals are used.

Under the federal law, turkeys and other poultry cannot be given hormones to increase growth. But they may receive antibiotic(抗生素)drugs to fight infection and improve weight gain.

Turkeys once were served mainly during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now people have a wide choice of products served all year.

Over the years, growers have developed turkeys that have more meat on their chest. These farm-raised birds are very different from their wild relatives. They cannot even reproduce without assistance. They are fertilized through the artificial insemination(人工授精)process.

America is growing older. Fifty-eight years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in

the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways --- education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying America has made us a very different society --- one in which people have quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行为)is suitable(合适)at various ages.

A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, “I’m much younger than my mother --- or my father--- was at my age.”No one says “Act your age”any more. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

65. It can be learnt from the text that the aging of population in America ________

A.has made people feel younger

B.has changed people’s social position

C.has changed people’s understanding of age

D.has slowed down the country’s social development

66. The underlined word “one” refers to _______

A. a society

B. America

C. a place

D. population

67. “Act your age” means people should _______.

A. be active when they are old

B. do the right thing at the right age

C. show respect for their parents young or old

D. take more exercise suitable to their age

D

I was telling my son Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise. At the end I said, “ Son, remember: being slow and steady(平稳的,坚定的)wins the race. Don’t you think there is something to learn from the tortoise?” He opened his eyes wide, “ Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Bill and Tony and Sandy all fall asleep half-way?”I was greatly surprised. “But the tortoise didn’t wish the hare would fall asleep.”

“ He must have wished that.” Sonny said, “ Or how could he be so stupid as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than himself did.”

“ He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted, “ He won the race by perseverance(毅力)by pushing on steadily.”

Sonny thought for a while. “That’s a lie,”he said, “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They are just “hopeless”.

68. Bill, Tony and Sandy must be the boys _______.

A. Sonny was afraid of

B. Sonny had run races with before

C. who were unknown to Sonny’s father

D. Sonny didn’t expect to race with

69. When the writer says, “I gave up” at the end of the story he means _______.

A.he gave up the belief in the moral lesson(寓意)of the story

B.he gave up arguing with his son

C.he gave up Sonny as a hopeless child

D. he gave up believing the tortoise was the winner of the race

70.. Which of the following is right according to the passage? _______.

A.Today’s children are really stupid and hopeless

B.Sonny’s father was sorry that he couldn’t make himself understood

C.The writer thought the new generation was hard to understand lessons

D.Sonny believed that hare should win the race by his own effort

五.任务型读写(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

I n business settings, it’s really easy to forget to take the time to say Thank You, yet it’s an Important part of communication with others, It’s important that people feel important and respected. Just as saying sorry matters, so does remembering to thank those who help you move forward. Here are some tips and ideas:

Email is nice; a personal card is better. It’s really easy to send email. I just sent a thank-you letter that way, and that’s what attracted me to post this. And yet, looking back, I think i t’s much nicer to send along a physical card. A personal note written by your own hand inside matters far more than a few lines of type into a window that’s so easily available at your fingertips. It shows you care enough to take an extra step.

Write s pecifically. We’ve all done it: we get a gilt from someone around the holidays or our birthday but we forget who sent what, so we send out that general “ Tha nks very much for the gift.” People know. They feel a little less specia l when you’ve sent a genera l reply. I find that people respond really well to targeted responses.”Thanks for the copy of IMPROV WISDOM. I really look forward to reading it, and look forward to discussing it with you when we talk next.” T hat’s simple, brief, and targeted.

Use nic e cards and a nice pen. If you’re going to go this route, put in the extra few minutes to purchase nice note-cards and use a pen that gives you decent flow. You don’t have to break the bank to give a professional and yet personal presence via the thank-you note you select and the ink you use to sign it. And, just like attractive-looking people don’t always have a great voice for radio, an expensive pen isn’t always the best flowing pen.

In person. Make sure you say thank you to people face to face when you have the opportunity. The same “content” applies. Be brief, be specific, and be warm about it. Say so in an unhurried way, l ooking into the person’s eyes. It is not enough to just say the words, or at least it won’t have the same effect. D o n’t make it into a miniseries TV moment, but do try to make sure the person senses how important their contribution to your life really was.

Be generous in your thanks, and the results will always he favorable.

We students have different opinions about it. Those who are for it hold the belief that there are some disadvantages to choose “three-good ” students. First, the students are labeled as good or weak ones prematurely. Second, it will produce students’ vanity. Third, it will hurt the feelings of those who are not chosen as “three-good ” students, which is unfair for them. However, those who are against it hold the view that students can benefit from it. First of all, it can set other students a good example. Second, good students need praise and should be praised. Moreover, it can direct and stimulate the slower students to learn from the good ones. As far as I’m concerned, we should not only focus on the students ’ academic records
