In the early part of the twentieth century, racism was widespread in the United States. Many African Americans were not given equal opportunities in education or employment. Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was an African American woman who gained fame as a concert singer in this climate of racism. She was born in Philadelphia and sang in church choirs during her childhood. When she applied for admission to a local music school in 1917, she was turned down because she was black. Unable to attend music school, she began her career as a singer for church gatherings. In 1929, she went to Europe to study voice and spent several years performing there. Her voice was widely praised throughout Europe. Then she returned to the US in 1935 and became a top concert singer after performing at Town Hall in New York City.

Racism again affected Anderson in 1939. When it was arranged for her to sing at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, the Daughters of the American Revolution opposed it because of her color. She sang instead at the Lincoln Memorial for over 75 000 people. In 1955, Anderson became the first black soloist to win the Metropolitan Opera of New York City. The famous conductor Toscanini praised her voice as “heard only once in a hundred years”. She was a US delegate to the United Nations in 1958 and won the UN peace prize in 1977. Anderson eventually triumphed over racism.

25. According to this passage, what did Marian Anderson do between 1917 and 1929?

A. She studied at a music school.

B. She sang for religious activities.

C. She sang at Town Hall in New York.

D. She studied voice in Europe.

28. This passage shows that Anderson finally defeated racism in the US by .

A. protesting to the government

B. appealing to the United Nations

C. demonstrating in the streets

D. working hard to perfect her art

C

Rae and Bruce Hostetler not only work very hard, they also relax just as well. Numerous vacations help the couple to maintain their health and emotional well-being and it's no surprise to health care professionals.

"Rest, relaxation, and stress reduction are very important for people's well-being and health. This can be accomplished through daily activities, such as exercise and meditation, but vacation is an important part of this as well," said primary care physician Natasha Withers from One Medical Group in New York. Withers lists a decreased risk of heart disease and improved reaction time as some of the benefits from taking some time off. "We also know that the mind is very powerful and can help with healing, so a rested, relaxed mind is able to help the body heal better," said Withers.

Psychologists confirm the value of vacations for the mind. " The impact that taking a vacation has on one's mental health is great," said Francine Lederer, a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who specializes in stress and relationship management. " Most people have better life perspective and are

more motivated to achieve their goals after a vacation, even if it is a 24-hour time-out. " The trips could be good for their health, good for their family and good for their businesses.

The online travel agency Expedia conducted a survey about vacation time in 2010, and according to their data the average American earned 18 vacation days-but only used 14 of them. France topped the list, with the average worker earning 37 vacation days and using all but two of them. Americans' responses may not be surprising in a culture where long hours on the job often are valued, but that's not always good for the individual, the family or the employer.

Psychologists have also found that people who don't take enough time to relax may find it harder to relax in the future. "Without time and opportunity to do this, the nerve connections that produce feelings of calm and peacefulness become weaker, making it actually more difficult to shift into less-stressed states," Mulhern said.

29. How did the author introduce the topic of the text?

A. By making comparisons.

B. By giving an example.

C. By raising questions.

D. By providing data.

30. According to Natasha Withers, vacations can______ .

A. weaken reaction system

B. cure serious diseases

C. reduce the level of well-being

D. decrease the risk of heart disease

31. Expedia's survey shows that Amencans_______.

A. dislike family gatherings

B. have the shortest vacation

C. enjoy as many vacations as the French

D. think much of spending long hours on the job

32. What is mainly talked about in the text?

A. Ways to relax in one's free time.

B. The benefits of taking time off.

C. Different opinions on holidays.

D. The Hostetlers always on the go.

范文

Sometimes I dream about the life in the future. What will it be like?I think two words can summarize my imagination.

The first word is “advanced”. With the development of science and technology, some people will go to the moon for a holiday or even live on the moon. In the future maybe each family will have a robot. Every day we can tell the robot what to do---shopping, housework and so on.

The second word is “convenient”. We can have a medical examination or do some shopping without leaving our homes, which makes the life much easier. And I'm sure there'll be more educational programmes on TV or the Internet, so perhaps some children won't need to go to school every day. They'll study at home.

I believe the dream will come true some day.

A On a Saturday night at home while relaxing with friends, a dog showed up at the house. In an attempt to find the legal owner and return the dog, we knocked on the door of the legal owner and an old man opened the door. This was the start of an interesting week. The old man sat down, made himself at home, and gifted us the dog. After a brief visit, he left, and we were now the proud owners of this dog. It takes experience and knowledge to know that our lifestyle can’t satisfy the needs of this dog; the owner that gifted us the dog was mismatched for him as well. Three attempts to return the dog to his old owner failed. (I think he was avoiding us.) Because our lifestyle didn’t allow us to give this poor dog the attention he needed, he disturbed the neighbors. They got involved. After we shared the story, they gained a new perspective and wisely stepped in to help us find a solution. One week later it was decided that dog would be picked up from us by the old neighbor. He would then return it to the previous owner who was more equipped to care for it. When faced with unexpected challenges in life, it helps to see everyo ne’s perspective. We have to look at one another’s perspective to solve a problem with honesty, experience and knowledge. That’s the sign of a leader. Although the old neighbor typically has little to do with leadership, it did bring a neighborhood together to understand one another and work as a team to solve a problem. 1. Why was the dog taken to the author’s home? A. To find food to eat. B. To seek a proper owner. C. The author was friendly to him. D. The old man couldn’t feed him. 2. What did the author find after he was gifted with the dog?

A “I am not an American,” mark twain (1835-1910) once said, “I am the American.” He had good reason to say so. A Nobel winner in literature, US playwright Eugene O’ Neill called him “the father of American literature”. Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media often praise him. But when you actually take the time to read the adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was first published 140 years ago, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever have imagined. The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure. More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses Tom to make fun of religion and its old traditions. “Often, the less there is to justify a traditional custom, the ha rder it is to get rid of it,” he writes in one chapter. Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US –he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn’t like US wars abroad. In 1900, after the US invaded the Philippines, Twain wrote in a newspaper article: “We do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines… We have gone there to conquer.” He also believed strongly in wo men’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
