Geor ge Max showed up in a well-maintained lorry. He brought some tools, such as something to light a fire with, a smoker, a long-handled brush, a metal hive(蜂箱)tool, and a hive. “Alright, it appears that we’ve got them all,” I looked hopefully in George’s direction. He pause d. “If you don’t mind, we’ll wait a bit longer,” he said. “They have sent out scout bees, and I want to be sure we don’t leave any behind.” So we waited. And, look! Scout bees returned.
If the hive is healthy, the population of bees will be on the increase. When the queen senses that it’s time for the hive to split, she will lose weight so she can fly, and then leave the hive with a large part of the bees. The bees left behind will hurry to hatch another queen and rebuild.
If some day you come across a swarm of bees in your backyard, call in a local beekeeper. Then sit back and enjoy the show. Get your camera, because you’ll want to share this amazing phenomenon with everyone you know, especially children. And if you’ve gone this far, you might as well buy a hive of your own. We did.

Running out of cooking oil or need some dressing for your salad? The solution may be bugs from your backyard! Scientists are turning insects into a source of eatable and healthy oil. Even though serving insects as dishes is common in some parts of the world, to many people, the thought of eating them is rather disgusting.
“In the Weste rn countries, there is no culture of eating entire insects. So when the idea is to use the protein in powder as an ingredient(配料), people might tend to receive this protein better, on condition that they cannot see it.” said researcher Daylan Tzompas-Sosa, Wageningen University, Netherland s. “There are many uses for the oil in general, but we are investigating the use of these oils for a food, as a food ingredient.”
The Mexican researcher, working in the Netherlands, said insects are a great source of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which can help treat anxiety disorder symptoms. Backing up the increased reliance on insects is the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. In a 2015 report, the UN agency approved the cultivation of bugs as a food source, saying it’s environm entally-friendly and could increase the world’s food production.
There are clear reasons that experts advise people to eat the insects. Experts say insects require little food to grow and that the backyard can be a good place to raise them. And there’s no shortage of protein-rich insects, which also contain fat, vitamins, fiber and minerals.
Researchers say different bugs provide unique tastes and textures. “This is very liquid and it has a different color, so this can be used as a dressing for example and it’s easy
to use and this can be used for example for pastry(油酥面团), because for pastry you need hard fats,” stated Tzompas-Sosa.
But not all insects produce good oil. Cockroaches (蟑螂) don’t. The bug oils must be tested to make s ure they are safe to consume. But getting over the “disgusting feeling” may be a bigger challenge.

Humans and many other mammals have unusually efficient internal temperature regulating systems that automatically maintain stable core（核心）body temperatures in cold winters and warm summers. In addition, people have developed cultural patterns and technologies that help them adjust to extremes of temperature and humidity（湿度）.
In very cold climates, there is a constant danger of developing hypothermia（低体温）, which is a life threatening drop in core body temperature to below normal levels. The normal temperature for humans is a bout 37.0°C. However, differences in persons and even the time of day can cause it to be as much as 6°C higher or lower in healthy individuals. It is also normal for core body temperature to be lower in elderly people. Hypothermia begins to occur when the core body temperature drops to 34.4°C. Below 29.4°C, the body cools more rapidly because its natural temperature regulating system usually fails. The rapid
decline in core body temperature is likely to result in death. However, there have been rare cases in which people have been saved after their temperatures had dropped to 13.9-15.6°C. This happened in 1999 to a Swedish woman who was trapped under an ice sheet in freezing water for 80 minutes. She was found unconscious, not breathing, and her heart had stopped beating, yet she was eventually saved despite the fact that her temperature had dropped to 13.7°C.
In extremely hot climates or as a result of uncontrollable infections, core body temperatures can rise to equally dangerous levels. This is hyperthermia. Life threatening hyperthermia typically starts in humans when their temperatures rise to 40.6-41.7°C. Only a few days at this extraordinarily high temperature level is likely to result in the worsening of internal organs and death.
