One afternoon many years ago, I got out and had a walk in the park near my home. Later, I sat down on a beach and ____46___. I watched a little boy, about 2 years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a ____47_____ distance. The boy would fall to the grass, get up and ____48____ looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could as if __49___ happened. When kids fall down, they don’t think of the fall as a failure. But they think of it as a learning experience, they try and try until they succeed. I was touched by the way he ran.

Each time he got up, he looked so 50 and natural. His only aim was to run as freely as he could. He was just being a child-just being 51 -being fully in the moment. He was not worrying about whether someone was watching or not. He only wanted to run and to 52 feel the joy of the running.

I learned a lot from the boy on that afternoon. I understand what kind of 53 I should have towards my future. And I have successfully brought that lesson with me in my life.

PART III Reading and Writing

A.

In the United States, it is important to be on time a class, a meeting, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian(巴西的) university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 A.M. and end at 12 A.M. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10 A.M. Several arrived after 10:30. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students’ behavior.

The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation. If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American students defined lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian students felt the friend was late after 33 minutes.

In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. In contrast, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00; many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.

Henley was a painter. He was going to hold an art exhibition, but he was never a confident person. He was happy to leave all the arrangements for the exhibition to his agent, a young man called Green, who had good ability in organization. Green went to Henley’s studio (画室) and, with the help of Henley’s wife, chose the pictures for the exhibition. He hired (租用)a hall and watched the workers hanging up all the pictures chosen. Most important of all, he checked carefully that all the invitations went to the right people: critics(评论家), reporters and of course people with money to spend on the paintings.

“There’s nothing to worry about.” Green said to Henley during the exhibition, “Everything is going well.” Henley was pleased, but still felt too shy to meet his public.

Soon Green came to him again. “One picture especially attracted attention.” Green told him. He looked up his list. “Number thirty-seven. It did not have a name, so your wife and I decided to call it ‘Midnight’ because all the colours are very dark.”

Henley was confused by Green’s description and couldn’t remember which picture he was talking about, but he said nothing. When everyone had left, he went out to see by himself the painting which had attracted so much attention. He laughed so much that Green came over to see what was the matter. At last Henley stopped laughing and told him that one of his son’s paintings had been hung up by mistake.

Good health is the best treasure a person can possess. Good health enables us to enjoy our life and achieve what you hope for in our career. On the other hand, poor in health, we can not achieve much though we are well-educated. Therefore, health is very important to us.

How can we keep healthy? First, we should keep a balanced diet. As the saying goes "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". We should eat more vegetables and fruits but less meat. In addition, getting enough

sleep is also important. Without enough sleep, we feel tired and irritable. Finally, regular exercise is essential for a healthy mind and body. If we are in good health, we can enjoy our life better.

A Every one of us has been hurt by others – either by their words or actions. In those moments, you may feel so much anger that you want to hurt the other person too. But we all know that revenge(报复) doesn’t get us anywhere. So, in order to live a happy life, the best way to deal with the problem is, perhaps, as the old saying goes, to “forgive and forget”. The wisdom of this saying has even been proven in scientific studies. “It is well established that learning to forgive others can have positive benefits for one’s physical and mental Health,”Saima Noreen, a scientist at the University of St Andrews, Uk, told the Huffington Post. And now, Noreen and her research team may have found one more reason that you should stick to this principle – forgiving somebody who has hurt you makes it easier for you to forget the unhappy memory, according to their new study. In the study, researchers asked volunteers to read descriptions of 40 different situations that contained bad actions such as stealing, lying and cheating.

Module 1 When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a path. In the east, the sky was becoming light. I knew it was there, but there was nothing to see. After about a mile, a stranger appeared in front of me. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied. “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it. Suddenly, the clouds cleared and the rain stopped. The sun rose behind me and beyond the rocks. I saw that the ground fell away and down to a river, far below me. I was looking across the Grand Canyon, one of the wonders of the natural world. I looked down to the Colorado River, from here a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of the each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still wouldn’t reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. How far is it? It’s about fifteen miles, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away, about 277 miles long. The Grand Canyon is not just big. It’s huge! I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder anywhere in the natural world?” I certainly know the answer. But what do you think? Module 2 Thanksgiving is an American festival. People give thanks for their food. It’s celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and it’s a time for a special dinner among family and friends. We’ve celebrated the festival since the first pioneers from England arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter. The local people, the Native Americans, taught the pioneers how to grow corn, catch fish and keep cows, sheep and hens. The following year they celebrated together by eating a dinner of the new food. We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is the most crowded room in our house because we all help to prepare the food there. We lay the table, then before we begin dinner, my father gives praise for the food, so we remember where the festival comes from. We usually eat too much, but it’s only once a year! We often listen to speeches and tell stories after dinner as well. When it’s all over everyone helps wash the dishes.
