DINNER

It was the night before the composition was due. As I looked at the list of topics (题目) , "The Art of Eating Spaghetti (意大利面条) " caught my eye. The word "spaghetti" brought back the 36 memory of an evening

at Uncle Alien' s in Belleville 37when all of us were seated around the table and Aunt Pat 38served spaghetti for supper. Spaghetti was an exotic treat in 39 those days. Never had I eaten spaghetti, and 40none of the grown-ups had enough experience to be 41 good at it. What laughing 42arguments we had about the 43 socially respectable method for moving spaghetti from plate to mouth. 44Suddenly, I wanted to write about that, but I wanted to 45 put it down simply for my own 46 joy , not for Mr. Fleagle, my composition teacher. 47 As for him, I would write something else.

When I finished it the night was half gone and there was no 48time left to write a proper composition for Mr. Fleagle. There was no choice next morning but to 49 hand in my work. Two days passed before Mr. Fleagle returned the 50 graded papers. He said, "Now, class, I want to read you a composition, "The Art of Eating Spaghetti'. "My words! He was reading my words out 51 loud to the whole class. 52 Somebody laughed, then the whole class was laughing with open-hearted enjoyment.

I did my best not to show 53 pleasure, but what I was feeling was pure happiness, 54for my words had the power to make people 55 laugh .

36 A. memory B. thought C. knowledge

50 A. written B. graded C. collected

51 A. loud B. fast C. publicly D. calmly

52 A. People B. Nobody C. Somebody

D. I

53 A. shock B. wonder C. worry D. pleasure

54 A. if B. for C. while D. although

55 A. excited B. satisfied C. think D. laugh 36. C。

37. A。When 在句子中引导定语从句,修饰the memory of an evening中的evening。

同时我们只能说in the p ast / last days,所以B和C不能选。

这里的him显然指的是上文提到的the comp osition teacher。

48. C。从When 引导的时间状语从句the night was ha lf gone可知这里指的是时间不多了。

49. C。从前所提到的write a proper composition fo r Mr. Fleagle 和there was no choice next morning,说明指的是作者明天早晨得交作文。

52. A。 又根据后文的“I did my best not to show …”

My words! He was reading my words out loud,可知作者此时的心情是愉快的。

Don't Take the Fun Out of Youth Sports

When I joined a private football league a few years ago, the sport meant everything to me. My coach said that I had lots of potential (潜力),, and I became captain of my 36 team. That was before all the fun was taken out of 37 playing.

At first, everyone on the team got 38equal playing time. Then the team moved up to the top division after winning all its games, and the 39pressure started. Some parents, who had paid the coach extra money so their daughters could have 40private one-on-one training, got angry when she didn't give them more playing time in our 41 matches. The coach was replaced.

The new coach, however, took all the fun out of the game: All we did during practice was 42run. I always wished to God that it would rain so we would not have the 43training. Of course, all teams run drills; they are 44necessary. But we ran so much that, afterwards, we had trouble 45breathing. Y ounger people shouldn't be doing exercises 46intended for 18-year-olds.

I was very thin 47 before I started football, but as a member of this team I wouldn't eat much, because I was afraid of being too 48full to run. I feared making mistakes, and the added pressure caused me to make more than my usual 49share .

Is all this pressure necessary ? I 50ended up leaving the football team. Four other girls did the same, and two of them stopped playing football completely.

That's 51sad, because they had so much potential. They were just burned-out with all the pressure they

52felt from the coach or their parents.

I continued playing football at school and

53rediscovered my love for it. I joined a private team coached by my school coach. When I started playing 54 for him, he told me I needed to relax because I looked nervous. After I 55calmed down, I played better. When you enjoy something, it's a lot easier to do it well.

36.A.class B.club C.team D.board

37.A.playing B.living C.learning D.working

答案 A

38.A.great B.equal C.right D.extra

解析注意第一句的At first和第二句中的Then。

39.A.business B.struggle C.attempt D.pressure

40.A.free B.private C.good D.basic

41.A.matches B.courses

C.lessons

D.programmes

答案 A

42A.jump B.play C.run D.shoot

43A.duty B.meeting C.operation D.training

44A.necessary B.boring C.scientific D.practical

答案 A

45A.speaking B.moving C.sleeping D.breathing

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/5317787532.html,ed B.intended C.made D.described

47A.till B.since C.before D.because

48A.full B.tired https://www.wendangku.net/doc/5317787532.html,zy D.big

答案 A

49A.size B.share C.space D.state 解析size 大小;share(属于某人应该做的)一份;space空间、太空;state状态。

50A.gave B.kept C.ended D.picked

end up doing sth.

51A.sad B.shameful C.silly D.serious

答案 A

52A.received B.suffered C.brought D.felt

53A.reconsidered B.rediscovered C.reformed D.replaced

54A.at B.by C.for D.around

55A.fell B.stepped C.slowed D.calmed 解析因为作者开始看上去紧张,教练告诉她放松,放松后,她踢得更好了。

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make you life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr.Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

SYDNEY: As they sat sharing sweets beside a swimming pool in 1999 , Shane Gould and Jessicah Schipper were simply getting along well , chatting about sport , life and " anything else that came up . "

Yet in Sydney next month , they will meet again by the pool , and for a short time the friends will race against each other in the 50-meter butterfly(蝶泳)in the Australian championships at Homebush Bay .

Gould , now a 47-year-old mother of four , has announced she will be making a return to elite competition (顶级赛事)to swim the one event , having set a qualifying (合格的)time of 30.32 seconds in winning gold at last year's United States Masters championships . Her comeback comes 32 years after she won three golds at the Munich Olympics .

Schipper , now a 17-year-old from Brisbane with a bright future of going to Athens for her first Olympics , yesterday recalled(回忆)her time with Gould five years ago .

" I was at a national youth camp on the Gold Coast and Shane had come along to talk to us and watch us train , " Schipper explained . " It seemed as if we had long been good friends . I don't know why . We just started talking and it went from there . "

" She had a lot to share with all of us at that camp . She told us stories about what it was like at big meets like the Olympics and what it's like to be on an Australian team . It was really interesting . "

Next time , things will be more serious . " I will still be swimming in the 50m butterfly at the nationals , so there is a chance that I could actually be competing against Shane Gould , " said Schipper , who burst onto the scene at last year's national championships with second places in the 100m and 200m butterfly .

The Westborough High School golf team had taken the official photos with the state prize. The other teams, disappointed, were on the bus heading home. And then Westborough instructor Greg Rota noticed something wrong with one of the score cards. A 9 had been recorded as a 7. They were not the state prize winner; Wobum High had won. "No one would have known," said Wobum's instructor, Bob Doran. For Rota, it wasn't a difficult decision: "The prize wasn't ours to take."

Most great inventors in the capitalist society meet with much opposition to their inventions from the people who place their own interests before those of the people. Big monopolies try to buy inventions and turn them to their own profits. When they fail, they resort to other tricks. Inventors have to overcome thousands of difficulties put in their path before they can see their dreams realized.

When George Stephenson was experimenting with the stream engine, there was much opposition from the Parliament, the newspaper, and landlords. They claimed that the noise and the smoke would kill cows, horses and sheep, that the engine would burst or that hot coals from it would set fire to their houses.

So it was a very difficult matter for George Stephenson to persuade the people that trains could go on smooth rails, could pull carriages and wagons full of people and goods, and that there was no great danger of accidents.

However, he was able to do it, and the first train driven by Stephenson himself showed that the newly invented steam engine was a complete success.

As a young girl, Elizabeth Barrett (Browning英国作家勃朗宁) ruptured a blood vessel on the lungs which did not

heal. The physician consigned her to a milder climate for the winter and she went Devonshire for restoration. Among the members of her family who accompanied her to those healing shores was her eldest brother. For a whole year they lived side by side in affectionate companionship, she all the while being greatly benefited by mild sea breezes of Torquay.

One summer morning her brother went board a small sailboat with two friends for a trip of several hours around the coast. Just as the vessel came in sight of the window where Miss Barrett sat watching, the boat struck a sunken reef; and all who were in it went down and perished in the sea, before assistant could be rendered. None of the bodies were ever found although the whole village, full of sympathy, assembled in search. This was the tragedy which utterly prostrated for some years afterwards the health and soul of Elizabeth Barrett. Somehow she felt that she herself had in some measure been the cause of all this horror, and she suffered accordingly. Her whole being seemed shattered, and a year longer elapsed before, she was able to be more to London. This fatal event, which so saddened her youth gave also a still deeper devotional feeling to hue of sorrow so apparent in many of her earlier pieces.

Television ,the modern wonder of electronics, brings the world into your own home in sight and sound,1. And the word "television" means "seeing far".

Television works in much the same way as radio. In radio, sound is changed into electromagnetic (invisible light) waves which are sent through the air. Experiments leading to modern television took place more than a hundred years ago. By the 1920s inventors and researchers had turned the early theories into working models.Yet it took another thirty years for TV to become an industry.

The influence of TV on the life of people is incalculable: it can influence their thoughts and their way of life. It can also add to their store of knowledge. Educational TV stations offer teaching in various subjects. Some hospitals use TV for medical students to get close-up views of operations. At first television programs were broadcast in black-and -white. With the development of science and technology, the problem of how to telecast them in full color was solved and by the middle 1960s the national networks were broadcasting most of their programs in color.

The programs that people watch are not only local and national ones. Since the launching of the first communications satellite, more and more programs are telecast "live" from all over the world. People in San

Francisco were able to watch the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. And live telecasts now come from outer space. In 1969, the first astronauts to land on the moon televised their historic "moon walk" to viewers on the earth. Since then, astronauts have regularly sent telecast to the earth.

The seriously depressed person sees himself in a very negative way. He is sure that he is alone and hopeless. He often blames himself for ordinary faults and shortcomings which he exaggerates. He is very discouraged about himself, the world, and his future. He becomes less interested in what is going on around him and doesn't get satisfaction from things he used to enjoy. Fatigue and early morning sleeplessness are quite common. The depressed person may want to sleep more than usual. He may lose his appetite and lose weight, or eat more than normally and gain weight. Another particular sign, seen in women, is crying spells. Many of these spells are short and common.

Depressives share the feeling that they have lost something very important to them, though often this is not really the case. From a feeling of loss, the depressed person progresses to false ideas that he is a loser and will always be a loser, that he must be worthless and perhaps not fit to live. He may even attempt suicide.

So many very depressed people attempt suicide that depressive illness may be considered the only fatal mental illness. Not all those suffering from depressive illness do attempt suicide. But the relationship is striking. It is estimated that as many as 75 percent of those who attempt suicide are seriously depressed. Other studies show that the person hospitalized for depression is about 36 times more likely to commit suicide than is the non-depressed person. The greatest risk occurs during or immediately after hospitalization. After age 40, the possibility of suicide increases in very depressed person. Almost twice as many women as men suffer from depressive illness. Almost twice as many women as men attempt suicide, but three times more men than women succeed.

It was not yet eleven o'clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger who had obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pocket for money, the ferryman lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger's figure.

He was a young man of barely eighteen years, evidently country bred, and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to town. He was wearing a tough gray coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this one.

The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs; his stockings of blue yarn must have been the work of a mother or sister, and on his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had perhaps sheltered the grayer head of the lad's father.

In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so abundantly stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair, well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature's gifts, and worth all that art could have done for his adornment.

The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little metropolis of a New England colony.

It seems that some people go out of their way to get into trouble. That's more or less what happened the night that Nashville Police Officer Floyd Hyde was on duty.

"I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville. As I got onto Highway 40, blue lights and sirens going, I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway. The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me. He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder. "

"Just about that time, "Hyde says, "I saw fire coming out from under that car, with blue smoke and oil going everywhere. He'd blown his engine. Now he had to stop. "

"After I arrested him, I asked him why he was running. He told me he didn't have a driver's license(执照). "

That accident cost the driver of the Firebird plenty-a thousand dollars for the new engine-not to mention the charges for driving without a license, attempting to run away, and dangerous driving.

My hometown lies in eastern Inner Mongolia. It is a beautiful small town.Because of the reforms and open door policy,it is getting richer and richer.I like it more and more all the time. But some years ago,the town was a poor and dirty place. It had row upon row of small old dingy brick houses, and

grass and trees were few and far between.People's clothes looked bad, always black and blue. There were garbage dumps which created a terrible smell everywhere in town. The roads were poorly built. When a truck passed by it raised a cloud of dust. You can imagine how bad the environment was!

Outline: 1. The seriousness of the present competition

2. The advantages of competition

3. The disadvantages of competition Competition is the method or practice of trying to do better than other people to win or become successful in a specific skill. As a camp, I believe competition is a way of nurturing one's ability and talent in such a way that the person is encouraged to excel more than other skilled person. In some cases and situation, competition may mean a struggle between two or more different competitors.

In the workplace, competition has received some bad press in recent years. Greed and layoffs are the two most frequently touted sins of competition. These two sins, however, can always be minimized with new rules (if the appropriate governing bodies are willing to live up to this responsibility of making such new rules) such as increased taxes on the greedy and work replacement/ training/ length-of-workweek rules for employees.

Concerned people have made some progress in environmental protection. Governments of many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop environmental pollution.

2011.11.05 Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions :There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A ,B ,C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: The reflective towers of New York City ,which is on the Atlantic migrating (迁徙的)route ,can be deadly for birds. “We live in an age of glass,” said https://www.wendangku.net/doc/5317787532.html,urel ,an architect.(76)“ It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights ,and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is.” About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into building in the city each year. Often ,they strike the lower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat (栖息地)loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year. (77)As glass office and apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standard for new building in July. The United States Green Building Council , a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings , will introduce a bird-safety credit this as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes , however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviolet (紫外线的)signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and net are the main options available. Often , only one section of a building needs to be changed. “ You don‘ t necessarily have to treat every window ,” https://www.wendangku.net/doc/5317787532.html,urel said. “ It would be too expensive to do the whole building. ” The Jacob Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations , is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns. 1. What is the main idea of the passage? A. New York is a city of glass towers. B. Glass tower are dangerous for migrating birds. C. New York adopted new safety standards for buildings. D. Glass towers are a new trend in the United States. 2. What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds? A. Climate change B. Habitat loss C. Lack of food D. Crashing into buildings. 3. What does the word “fixes” in the third paragraph probably mean ? A. Choices B. Explanations C. Solutions D. Developments 4. ___ are used in the alteration of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. A. Dot patterns B. Shades C. Nets D. Covers 5. Which of the fowling statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. In many cases, the whole building needs to be altered to prevent bird crashes. B. The Jacob K.Javits Convention Center is the first building to deal with the problem of bird crashes. C. About 90 , 000 birds are killed due to habitat loss in New York City each year. D. Unfortunately , glass designs that use ultraviolet signals are still in their early stages. Passage 2 Question 6 to 10 are based on the fowling passage: Today‘s students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F.D.R. , and they live in a world where amazing innovations (革新)are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford;Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital (数字的), they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship (企业家才能)education , in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them. A report published last year by the Kauffman Foundation , which finances programs to promote innovation on campuses, noted that more than 50, 000 entrepreneurship programs are offered on two-and four-year campuses—up from just 250 courses in 1985. Lesa Mitchell , a Kauffman vice president, says that the foundation is extending the reach of its academic influence , which used to be found only in business schools. Now , the concept of entrepreneurship is blooming in engineering programs and medical school , and even in the liberal arts. “Our interest is the programs ,” she says. “ We need to spread out from the business school.” Either as class projects or on their own , students in a variety of majors are coming up with ideas, writing business plans and seeing them through to prototype and , often, market. In their spare time , students in agricultural economics at Purdue invent new uses for bean ;industrial design majors at Syracuse, in special laboratory , create wearable technologies. (78)The entrepreneurship movement has its critics , especially among those who see college as a time for extensive academic exploration. “I just don ‘t think that entrepreneurship ranks so high in terms of national need ,” says Daniel S.Greenberg, author of Science for sale:The perils, Rewards and Delusions of Campus Capitalism. Leonard A.Schlesinger , Babson College‘s president, says that the question of whether innovation can really be taught is “ an age-old argument” 6. When Google and Facebook were established , the founders were still ____ . A. in high school B. in the army C. in primary school D. at college 7. According to the passage, what is the main purpose of entrepreneurship education ? A. To prepare students for future academic life

学位英考试试题-1 Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Archaeology, like many academic words, comes from Greek and means, more or less, “the study of old things”. So, it is really a part of the study of history. However, most historians use paper evidence, such as letters, paintings and photographs, but archaeologists (考古学家) learn from the objects left behind by the humans of long ago. Normally, these are the hard materials that don't break down or disappear very quickly—things like human bones and objects made from stone and metal. It is very unusual to find anything more than the hard evidence of history--normally, the bacteria (细菌) in the air eat away at soft materials, like bodies, clothes and things made of wood. Occasionally, things are different. In 1984, two men made an amazing discovery while working in a bog called Lindow Moss, in the north of England. A bog is a very wet area of earth, with a lot of plants growing in it. It can be like a very big and very thick vegetable soup—walk in the wrong place and you can sink and disappear forever. The men were working when one of them saw something sticking out—a human foot! Naturally, the men called the police, who then found the rest of the body. Was it a case of murder? Possibly--but it was a death nearly two thousand years old. The two men had found a body from the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. Despite being so old, this body had skin, muscles, hair and internal organs—the scientists who examined him were able to look inside the man's stomach and find the food that he had eaten for his last meal! Why was this man so well preserved? (76) It was because he was in a very watery environment, safe fi:om the bacteria that need oxygen to live. Also, the water in the bog was very acidic. The acid preserved the man's skin in the way that animal skin is preserved for leather coats and shoes. How did he die? Understandably, archaeologists and other scientists wanted to know more about the person that they called,“Lindow Man”. (77) His hands and fingernails suggested that he hadn't done heavy manual work in his life—he could have been a rich man. They found that he hadn't died by accident. The archaeologists believe that he was sacrificed to three different gods. 1. Which language does the word “archaeology”come from? A. French. B. Greek. C. Roman. D. German. 2. The word “these” in the first paragraph refers to_______. A. letters B. photographs C. paintings D. objects 3. Which of the following helped to preserve“Lindow Man”? A. Ice and Iow temperature. B. Bacteria and oxygen. C. Soil and energy. D. Acid and water. 4. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
