It was the first snow of winter — an exciting day for every child but not for

“Get your hands off me, I have been stolen, ” the laptop, a portable computer, shouted. That is a new solution to laptop computer theft: a program that lets owners give their property a voice whe n it has bee n take n.

The program allows users to display alerts on the missing computer ' s screen

and eve n to set a spoke n message. Track ing software for stole n laptops has bee n on the market for some time, but this is thought to be the first that allows owners to give the thief a piece of their mind.

Owners must report their laptop miss ing by visit ing a website, which sends a message to the model: a red and yellow “lost or stolen ” sign appears on its screen when it is started. Under the latest version (版本)of the software, users can also send a spoke n message.

The message can be set to reappear every 30 sec on ds, no matter how many times the thief closes it. ” One customer sent a message saying, ' You are being tracked. I am right at your

door' , ” said Carrie Hafeman, chief executive of the company which produces the program, Retriever.

In the latest vers ion, people can add a spoke n message. For example, the laptop ' s speakers will say: “Help, this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, report me now. ”

The Retriever software package, which costs $ but has a free trial period, has

the functions of many security software programs .Owners can remotely switch to an alter native password if they fear that the thief has also got hold of the access details.

If a thief accesses the internet with the stolen laptop, Retriever will collect information on the internet service provider in use, so that the police can be alerted to its locati on.

Thousands of laptops are stolen every year form homes and offices, but with the use of laptops in creas ing, the nu mber stole n while their owners are out and about has bee n rising sharply.

Other security software allows users to erase data remotely or lock dow n the computer.

The latest research suggests that the key factor separat ing geni uses (天才)from the merely accomplished is not ., a gen erally bad predictor of success. In stead, it ' s purposeful practice. Top performers spend more hours practising their craft. If you wan ted to picture how a typical genius might develop, you' d take a girl who possessed a slightly above average Ianguage ability. It wouldn' t have to be a big

tale nt, just eno ugh so that she might gain some sense of disti nction. Then you would want her to meet, say, a novelist, who coincidentally shared some similar qualities. Maybe the writer was from the same tow n, had the same family backgro und, or shared the same birthday.

This con tact would give the girl a visio n of her future self. It would give her some idea of a fascinating circle who might someday join. It would also help if one of her pare nts died when she was 12, givi ng her a strong sense of in security and fuelli ng a desperate n eed for success. Armed with this ambiti on, she would read novels and life stories of writers without end. This would give her a primary knowledge of her field. She' s be able to see new writing in deeper ways and quickly

un dersta nd its inner work in gs.

Then she would practise writing. Her practice would be slow, painstaking and error-focused. By practising in this way, she delays the automatizing process. Her mind wants to turn con scious, n ewly lear ned skills in to uncon scious. Automatically performed skills. By practising slowly, by breaking skills down into tiny parts and repeating, she forces the brain to internalize a better pattern of performanee. Then she would find an adviser who would provide a con sta nt stream of feedback, view ing

her performa nee form the outside, correct ing the smallest errors, push ing her to take on tougher challenges. By now she is redoing problems —how do I get characters into a room —doze ns and doze ns of times. She is establish ing habits of thought she can call upon in order to un dersta nd or solve future problems.

The primary quality our young writer possesses is not some mysterious geni us.

It ' s the ability to develop a purposeful, laborious and boring practice routine; the latest research takes some of the magic out of great achievement. But it underlines a fact that is often neglected.

Public discussion is affected by genetics

and what we ' re “hard -wired ” to do. And it ' s true that genes play a role in our capabilities. But the brain is also very plastic. We con struct ourselves through behaviour. Ks5u

There is a com mon belief among pare nts that schools are no Ion ger in terested in spelli ng. No school I have taught in has ever con sidered spell ing uni mporta nt as a basic skill. There are, however, quite differe nt ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority (优先)it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelling.

If spelling becomes the only point of his teacher ' s interest, clearly a bright

child will be likely to “ play safe ” . He will write only words within his spelling range (范围).That ' s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay atte nti on to content rather tha n tech ni cal ability.

I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a pers onal experie nee: “ This work is terrible! There are far too many spelli ng

mistakes. ” It may have been a sharp criticism(扌比评)of the pupils technical

abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had omitted (略过)to read the compositi on, which contained some beautiful expressi ons of the child ' s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw atten tion to the mistakes,

but if his priority had centered on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappo in tme nt with the prese ntati on would have give n the pupil more hope to seek improveme nt.
