The region has been seriously polluted by harmful smog, which proves to be the cause of many illnesses and for the climbing death rate. As a result, people have started to move out of the area.

In response to the problem, the local government has decided to fight against air pollution. It has closed down several factories, which were considered to be the major cause of the pollution. Many power plants have been modernized to give off less pollution and also moved further away from people’s homes so as to decrease the damage. At the same time, the local government has decided to plant trees in and around the region because trees can absorb some of the pollution.

People welcome all the measures taken by the government. Consequently, more and more people have begun to move back to the region to take part in this battle for a clean environment.

Chinese Students Are Doing Better in Their Studies

It is reported that Chinese students are doing far better than American students in their studies. What are the reasons?

That Chinese have strong belief in hard work is the first of the two main factors contributing to Chinese students’ outstanding performance. Chinese students believe that through hard work and effort, people can perfect themselves and gain a better future for themselves. And they have also set higher standards for themselves. The second factor is that Chinese students have a strong duty to their families. They work hard not just for themselves but for the honor of their families. They have a high sense of responsibility. They believe that they do not deserve the support of their parents unless they do well in their studies.

The two important factors are the major causes why Chinese students do so well in their studies.

There are some key steps in career planning. The first one is to study yourself. Understanding what you are like, what you value, and what you become is the foundation for career planning. In studying yourself, you examine your strengths, your weaknesses and your goals. The second step is to write your career goals down. Write something down may lead to new ideas and may help you see your possibilities. Another step is to review your plans and progress periodically. This may help you see how you have done so far and help you realize what steps to take next. Planning further steps can help you face new changes. Taking with your friends helps you improve your career plans and make them work.

What should we do in order to become successful learners? The following are some suggestions.

Concentrating. Good learners allow no interruptions in their study time. Once they set to study, they don't answer phone calls, watch TV, or read newspapers.

Studying everywhere. Good learners are good at studying everywhere. For example, they practice speaking English to themselves when waiting for a meeting to start or for the bus to come. Some of them stick a vocabulary list on their bathroom wall and learn a new word every day while brushing their teeth.

Taking notes. Good learners divide a page into two page into two parts: Write notes on the right and put down the main ideas on the left. At the end of each class, they write a few sentences about the lesson's main points.

Section B

I.

1. The title is actually a question. By using a question as a title, the writer tries to attract the readers' attention. Obviously, it's about the possibility or legality of human cloning. The writer will give us a thorough analysis as to who might take advantage of human cloning.

2. The language is formal and serious. Besides, it is emotional. The evidence for this is the repeated employment of rhetorical questions.

3. Altogether, there are seven questions, including the one in the title. Of the seven, four are rhetorical questions. They appear respectively at the end of Paragraph 2, Paragraph 3, Paragraph 4, and at the beginning of Paragraph 6.

4. Rhetorical questions are mainly intended to stir up the readers’ emotions, to put them off guard, making them ready to accept the writer’s opinion. Rhetorically, this is called emotional appeal. By using rhetorical questions four times, the writer of this text is appealing to the readers to accept the idea “Don’t just say no to human cloning”. With all the above in view, we can see that the text is persuasive.

As an important part of the American culture value system, "individualism" is admired by most American people. Americans view the family as a group whose primary purpose is to advance the happiness of individual members. In contrast to many other cultures, the primary responsibility of the American family member is not to advance the family as a group, either socially or economically. What would be best for the family is not usually considered to be as important as what would be best for the individual. With freedom comes the responsibility to care for oneself, for it is the freedom of choice that carries with it the responsibility: to accept the consequences of the choices. Many Americans give their children a lot of freedom because they want them to be independent and self-reliant. Along with the American emphasis on individual freedom, the belief in equality between parents and children also has had a strong effect on the family. Filial piety is the basic code of ethics in ancient Chinese society. Chinese people consider filial piety as the essence of a person's integrity, family harmony, and the nation's well-being. With filial piety being the core of Confucian ethics, it has been the moral standard for the Chinese society to maintain the family relationship for thousands of years. It's undoubtedly a traditional Chinese virtue. The culture of filial piety is a complex concept, rich in content and wide in range. It includes not only cultural ideas but also institutional etiquettes. Generally speaking, it refers to the obligation of children to their parents required by the society, including respect, care, support for the elderly and so forth. Filial piety is fundamental to the ancient "Oriental civilization".
