Notes:

1. The pronunciation of ‘contrary’ in the popular nursery rhyme is still with 2nd syllable stress, however this word seems to have been already long Englished by the time of Johnson who records it with 1st syllable stress only. Thus the 2nd syllable stress is likely to be understood as satirical that is to say an ‘iambic’ pronunciation in an overall ‘trochaic’ structure.

Breakdown

How many of the US forms have standard or alternative sounds that differ from the characteristic stressed ‘ary’ ending? A count up shows that currently 17 out of a total of 30 words have such an alternative. Thus in the context of the ongoing trend to shorter forms we have to be careful about simply saying that in general the US forms have this stressed‘ary’ ending which so sets it apart from the typical British English pronunciation in which the ‘a’ of the ‘ary’ ending has long been dead in standard speech. So, although only ‘anniversary’, ‘boundary’, ‘primary’, ‘salary’, & ‘summary’, are usually heard as in British English, the trend towards the shorter form for others is clear.
