Passage Two

Questions 26 t0 30 are based on the following passage.

What can parents do if their son or daughter is obviously in a poor sehool but that is all there is available?

This is a fairly standard problem, but there is no standard answer to it.The first thing to say is that parents should be very sure of their ground before

concluding that all their prob lems are located in the sch001.For example, poor marks for a student with good ability do not necessarily denote a f poor sch001.All they really say is that the pupil is not responding to his teachers and that the teachers have said so in the marks they have given him, which is what would be expected in a standard school situation. The trouble may be anywhere the home, the maturity of the student, his health, his program,or in one or more of the teachers. If it were centered entirely in the school,it might even be hard to detect, for a poor school may give good marks tO all students, good and bad.

But assuming that parents are sure of themselves the first step is to see what can be done in the sch001 itself. It is rare that a school is all bad and if some bright spots be located then there is the possibility of improvement particularly if the community will support it.Beyond this community approach, parents themselves might undertake to supply the needed extra instruction. If they can’t do this systematically, they can at least be sure that the student has all the home can provide him in the way of study materials, reference works and books to read, and they can encourage him to teach himself.Still another method would be to take corres口ondence courses, which in nearly all states are available through one of the state universities or colleges. There are also the courses nOW being offered on television.

Private tutoring is another possibility. In other words, the parents can and must improve the situation and should not just sit back and moan over the sch001.The student can still study if he wants t0,and the results will show up in his interest and prepa ration even if they don’t show up in his marks.

26.What does the“poor school”mean in the passage? ( )

A.The sch001 which is short of teachers.

B.The school has ittle money.

D.The school needs help.

B.correspondence course

C.reference works

C.It is OD the part of the teacher that accounts for.

D.There is not a simple straightforward answer.

29.If there is some problem about the quality of the school, you may_____as the author suggested. ( )

A.shift your son tO a better sch001

B.ask the community for help

C.encourage your son to stay home and teach himself

In l 979.Almost l5 million Americans held passports. Most of these passports were obtained to travel outside the country because, except for a few Western nations, passports are required to enter every country. And if you travel abroad, you must have a valid passport to reenter the country.

When traveling abroad, you will need a passport for identi fication when

exchanging d01lars for francs or marks or other foreign currency. You may also need your passport to use a credit card, buy an airplane ticket or check into a hotel. As a passport is an official U.S.document,it is valuable as identification in any emergency cases, such as floods, fires,or war.

Don’t confuse pa ssports and visas.Whereas a passport is issued by a country to its citizens,a visa is official permission to visit a country granted by the government of that country. For some years, many countries were dropping their visa require ments but that trend has reversed.Argentina,Brazil, and Venezuela now require visas from U.S.citizens.They may be obtained from the embassy of the country you wish to visit.

Passport applications are available at passport agency offices in large cities like Boston,New York,or Chica90.In smaller cities, applications are available at post offices and at federal courts. To get your first passport, you must submit the applieation in person, along with a birth certificate and two pictures.31.The main purpose of this passage is to_____. Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.

(10 points) Facebook has been 1 with fire and has got its fingers burned, again. On November 29th America’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it had reached a 2 settlement with the giant social network over 3 that it had misled people about its use of their personal data. The details of the settlement make clear that Facebook, which 4 over 800m users, betrayed its users’ trust. It is also notable because it appears to be part of a broader 5 by the FTC to craft a new privacy framework to deal with the rapid 6 of social networks in America. The regulator’s findin gs come at a 7 moment for Facebook, which is said to be preparing for an initial public offering next year that could value it at around $100 billion. To 8 the way for its listing, the firm first needs to resolve its privacy 9 with regulators in America and Europe. 10 its willingness to negotiate the settlement 11 this week. Announcing the agreement, the FTC said it had found a number of cases where Facebook had made claims that were “unfair and deceptive, and 12 federal law”. For instance, it 13 personally identifiable information to advertisers, and it failed to keep a promise to make photos and videos on deleted accounts 14 . The settlement does not 15 an admission by Facebook that it has broken the law, but it deeply 16 the company nonetheless. In a blog post published the same day, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s boss, tried to17 the impact of the deal. First he claimed that “a small number of high-profile mistakes” were 18 the social network’s “good history” on privac y. The FTC is not relying on Facebook to police itself. Among other things, the company will now have to seek consumers’ approval before it changes the way it shares their data. And it has agreed to an independent privacy audit every two years for the next 20 years. There is a clear pattern here. In separate cases over the past couple of years the FTC has insisted that Twitter and Google accept regular 19 audits, too, after each firm was accused of violating its customers’ privacy. The intent seems to be to create a regulatory regime that is tighter than the status quo, 20 one that still gives social networks plenty of room to innovate. 1. A black hole in the universe is not a solid object, like a planet, but it is shaped like a sphere. Astronomers think that at the center of a black hole there is a single point in space with infinite density. This single point is called a singularity. If the singularity theory is correct, it means that when a massive star collapses, all the material in it disappears into the singularity. The center of a black hole would not really be a hole at all, but an infinitely dense point. Anything that crosses the black hole is pulled in by its great gravity. Although black holes do exist, they are difficult to observe. These are the reasons. ● No light or anything else comes out of black holes. As a result, they are invisible to a telescope. ● In astronomical terms, black holes are truly. For example, a black hole formed by the collapse of a giant star would have an event horizon only 18 miles across. ● The nearest black holes would be dozens of light years away from Earth. One light year is about 6 trillion miles. Even the most powerful telescopes could not pick out an object so small at such a great distance. In 1994 the Hubble Space Telescope provided evidence that black holes exist. There are still answers to be found, however, so black holes remain one of the mysteries of the universe. 1. Black holes are part of space. A. True B. False C. Not Given 2. Black holes exist but are difficult to observe. A. True B. False C. Not Given 3. Music can also reduce stress, make depression more bearable and help you relax. All the benefits of music can only be got if the listener enjoys the music he is listening to. If the listener dislikes the music or finds it boring,it will have a negative effect on him instead of a positive one. Now let's examine what most of us do when it

comes to listening to music. We usually just listen to a play list and allow a program to randomly(任意的)select the songs we are going to listen to. This is where the program lies. What if you liked the first song but found the second one boring? What if the third one was a motivating song while the fourth didn’t suit your emotions? What do you think the result will be? What you'll have is an emotional mess! The first song will lift your mood a little. The second will make you a little bored. The third will motivate you and then the fourth will put you down. In the end you’ll end up feeling worse than before. I strongly recommend dividing your play list into different small lists. For example, a list for relaxation, a list for motivation and so on. Another very important thing you must do is to get rid of all of the old music that you are bored of. Besides, don't listen to songs with negative words or messages. The music you listen to can delay your recovery from breakups(分手)by months and months!

The first hundred years after Christopher Columbus’s journey of discovery in 1492 did not produce any settlement on the North America continent but rather some Spanish trading posts further south, a great interest in gold and adventure and some colorful crimes in which the English had their part. John Cabot, originally from Genoa but a citizen of Venice was established as a trader in Bristol, England, when he made a journey in 1497. But his ship, the Matthew, with its crew of eighteen, did no more than see an island(probably off the New England coast) and return home. He and his son made further voyages across the north Atlantic which enabled the English crown to claim a "legal" title to North America. But for a long time afterwards the Europeans’interest in America was mainly corffined to the Spanish activities further south.

The first commercial (商业的) cell phone system was developed by the Japanese in 1979. But cell phones have changed a lot since that time. The early cell phones were big and heavy but they have been developed into small and light palm-sized models. There have been huge developments in their functions, too. We have had cell forwarding, text messaging, answering services and hands-free use for years, but now there are countless new uses, such as instant access to the internet and receiving and sending photos. Cell phones have become very common in our lives; recent statistics suggest as many as one in three people on the planet now have a cell phone, and most of them say they can’t live without one. Cell phones are used in every area of our lives and have become a necessary tool, used for essential arrangements, social contact and business. They have made it easier to call for help on the highway. They have made it possible to keep in touch with people” on the move” when people are traveling. Cell phones have made communication easier and have reduced the need for family arguments. We can use cell phones to let our family know we’ll be late or if there’s a change of plan or an emergency(紧急情况)。Cell phones have eased the worries of millions of parents when their teenagers are out late, and they can now contact their children at any time. This does not mean that cell phones are all good news. They have brought with them a number of new headaches for their owners: it costs a lot to replace stolen phones, something that is becoming a frequent occurrence, and have you ever seen such huge phone bills? More serious, however, is the potential health problem they bring: there are fears that radiation from the phones may cause brain tumor (肿瘤)。This may be a time bomb waiting to happen to younger people who have grown up with cell phones that they simply can’t live without. 1. American researchers set up the first commercial cell phone system in 1979. A .True B. False C. Not given 2. The modern cell phone is smaller and lighter than the early ones. A .True B. False C. Not given 3. People can use the cell phones to access to the internet. A .True B. False C. Not given
