The Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. This festival is to commemorate the death of QU Yuan, an upright and honest poet and statesman who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.

The most important activity of this festival is the Dragon Boat races. It symbolizes people's attempts to rescue Qu Yuan. In the current period, these races also demonstrate the virtues of cooperation and teamwork.

Besides, the festival has also been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice). Zong zi is made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. People who mourned the death of Qu threw Zong zi into the river to feed his ghost every year.

With the changes of the times, the memorial turns to be a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of year. People will hang healthy herbs on the front door to clear the bad luck of the house. Although the significance of the festival might be different with the past, it still gives the observer an opportunity to glimpse a part of the rich Chinese cultural heritage.

Should private car owners be taxed for pollution?

With the development of society, many people can afford a car. As the number of the cars is rising, we are facing some problems. One big problem is the pollution caused by the use of cars. In order to solve this problem, government agencies in some big cities recently suggest that a “pollution tax”should be put on private cars in order to control the number of cars and reduce pollution in the city. For my part, I agree to this viewpoint, and my reasons are as follows:

To begin with, cars contribute to the environmental pollution. For example, a lot of big cities in China are now plagued by serious air pollution. Then it is the responsibility of these private car owners to pay for the pollution and they should be taxed. The purpose of collecting environmental pollution tax is to raise the fund, and then utilize the tax revenue lever to protect our environment.

Secondly, it is a good way to raise people's environmental awareness by putting a pollution tax on private cars. If people suffer from the financial loss when making a decision, they will think more about their decision. Then they will consider more when deciding to buy a private car. Consequently, the increase rate of the number of the private cars can be controlled.

In a word, it is a very good and necessary attempt to use the means of taxation to treat the pollution. Of course, it must be kept in mind that all people, including the private car owners, should try their best to protect the environment.

Should College Students Hire Cleaners?

According to a recent report, six university students hired cleaners to clean their dorm and do their laundry every week. Although we have no right to tell them what to do with their money, as a

university student myself, I find this practice absurd.

For a start, away from our parents, it is in university that we learn to be independent adults. Cleaning the room and doing one’s laundry are the most basic living skills. If we always depend on others to take care of us, how can we survive when there is no one to help us? How can we take on any responsibility when we step into society?

For another, the practice reflects their flippant attitude towards money. The money they paid for the cleaners probably comes from their parents, who must be very depressed once they know the truth. It also sets a very bad precedent on campus. Other students may follow suit to show the wealth of their families; or worse, they tend to think money can buy them anything in this world, which obviously is wrong.

All in all, I think we must do away with this practice. Otherwise, we may never appreciate the good value of money and an independent way of life. The better and sooner we can take care of ourselves, the more proud our parents will be.

Will Tourism Bring Harm to the Environment?

In recent years, tourism has developed rapidly in China. Many people believe that tourism produce positive effects on economic growth and we should try our best to promote tourism. But what these people fail to see is that tourism may bring about a disastrous impact on our environment. As for me, I’m firmly convinced that too much tourists bring harm to the environment.

The bad impact of tourism on the environment has mainly expressed itself in various ways. One way is the process of exploiting a new scenic spot. In order to attract tourists, a lot of artificial facilities have been built, which have certain unfavorable effects on the environment. This process usually breaks the ecological balance of the area. In some mountainous places, trees are being cut down to build hotels for others to see and explore the beauty of the mountains. Then land slides and mud-rock flows come up. Another way the development of tourism has damaged the environment o ccurs when tourists go to scenic spots. Some tourists don’t have the awareness to protect the environment, and ignorantly throw their garbage here and there. Some people even kill the local wildlife to eat, which badly damages the balance of the natural environment.

It is wrong to sacrifice the environment for the growth of tourism. We must keep in mind that too much tourists bring harm to the environment. We need to find a balance between satisfying the needs of tourists and reducing to a minimum the pollution they cause.

The Benefits of V olunteering

V olunteering has grown into a fashion these years, with volunteers ranging from college students to white collar workers. It is reported now China has 4.5 million registered volunteers having provided more than 4.5 billion hours of volunteer work. Why would so many people like to do volunteer work? Are there any benefits of volunteering?

The answer is absolutely yes. First of all, through volunteering we can gain more experiences.

Whatever volunteering work we do, either being a volunteer teacher for a village school or a volunteer worker in a retired house, we can taste different lifestyles and broaden our horizon. Secondly, through volunteering we can acquire the sense of being needed. Many people feel frustrated with travails in life and empty with the cycling of working and resting. They gradually become numb, losing the sense of being needed. By joining the volunteer group and offering help voluntarily to people who need it, we may feel happy and fulfilled again.

Thirdly, through volunteering we can learn more good qualities. V olunteer work is team work, which needs good cooperation. We can know people with different personalities and different background joining in the volunteer group and devoting to the volunteer work together. From our co - volunteers we can absorb many good qualities that could help us be better persons.

In conclusion, volunteering is of great benefit in that we can gain more experiences, acquire the sense of being needed and learn more good qualities.

范文1 Is It Wise to Make Friends Online?

Currently the public has paid great attention to the debate concerning whether it is wise or not to make friends online. Taking all the favorable and unfavorable aspects into account, I stand firmly on the side that we can benefit from making friends online. This point of perspective, I believe, shared by the largest proportion of the public, can be explained in the following tangible reasons. Firstly, communication is unquestionably regarded as an extremely important element in our society. Unfortunately, there are people around us appear to be apathetic and have got no idea about how to make an acquaintance with a stranger. They may be too shy or nervous or they are afraid of being refused by others. But remember no man is an island entire of itself, every man is a part of the continent, a part of the main. As a consequence, regardless of the fact that whether you like it or not, as individuals, we have to be part of the main. And, internet, as a mass medium, provides us with a chance. Things turn to be quite different because sitting in front of the computer screen, people who are scared to make friends online can talk with others more naturally and confidently.

Secondly, it is well acknowledged that we can learn a lot from our e-pals. If our friend online were a foreigner, we can practice English with him or her. What’s more, we can have a glimpse of general information of another country, such as the culture, the tradition, the custom or the geography.

From what have mentioned above, we can come to the conclusion that making friends online can do us some good. And communication online is having a greater impact on our daily life.

范文2 Is it wise to make friends on the Internet?

With the overwhelming development of Internet, never has been a communication tool, like MSN or QQ, that makes people contact with each other using such a convenient and extensive method. However, is it wise to make acquaintance with cyber friends throughout the globe even when each other’s identity is secretly classified? My answer is no.

Admittedly, making friends online bring us a great amount of joy and unimagined stimulating experience. Nevertheless, as we can only communicate people though words or images, someone with ulterior motives may hide behind the screen waiting for a moment to conspire his illegal actions. Just as the joke tells, a 21 years old pretty girl may turn out to be an 80 years old ugly drunker.

In addition, people are easily getting addicted to this fictitious relationship and losing the ability of surviving in their real living environment. Net communication can never take the place of a face to face taking or a familiar attracting expression. What is more, who are you turning into when emergency happens, someone tho usands miles far away that you even don’t know about his name, or the next door neighbors who smile at you every morning?

In conclusion, when we try to make friends online, it is necessary to be sensible and take precautions to ensure our safety especially meeting net friends outside. Only in this way, can we enjoy the exciting experience and extremely convenient the net brings to us.

范文1 My Idea of Saving Money

A recent survey, carried out by a Beijing-based information company, has shown that two thirds of the Chinese college students today favor the idea of saving money for later use, whereas quite many others deem it much be tter to use tomorrow’s money today. Personally, I side with the former.

Firstly, saving money can relieve one’s anxiety in case of accidents, disease or other mishaps. As we all know, when one faces such tragedies as fir damage or fatal disease, one would need a large amount of money to survive such difficulties. Secondly, saving money can give one a sense of fulfillment. Since most people work hard every day, they will be quiet happy and satisfied with his “achievement” when they find they have accumulated a large deposit in the bank. Thirdly, saving money allows one to give a helping hand to others. With money available at the moment, one can offer badly needed help to those in temporary difficulty, say, those who are suffering from flood, famine, a car accident, or things like that. Yet taking a loan from a bank is often too costly. Thus, the timely help will be rewarded with gratitude. A dependable friendship will eventually be fostered.

To sum up, saving money does have many advantages. Indeed, it is an important aspect of the Chinese conception of virtue. Therefore, let’s start saving money from today on.

范文2 Using Tomorrow’s Money for Today’s Comfort

Recently a Beijing information company did a survey of student life among more than 700 students, and the results have shown that 67 percent students think that saving money is a good habit, while the rest believe using tomorrow’s money today is better. For me, I agree with the latter point of view.

Most people may have heard of the story about a Chinese old lady and an American old lady. The former spent all her life painstakingly saving enough money to buy a new apartment, without living in it for a long time before her death, while the latter first borrowed money form the bank to buy a new apartment in her youth and lived in it comfortably, then spent the rest of her life paying the loan. In the story, the results are the same---they both bought an apartment, but their life experiences are radically different; the former hardly lived in the house for she had spent all her life saving money for it, while the latter enjoyed living there for quite a long time because she “ used tomorrow’s money today”. By comparison, we can clearly see that the latter’s choices of lifestyle is much better than the former’s Then, why don’t we use tomorrow’s money for today’s comfort?

To conclude, I think using tomorrow’s money today is much better than saving money all day.

2005年专四真题作MY IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY ARTS FESTIV A

With merely four months to go before the arts festival starts, my fellow students are getting increasingly enthusiastic in brainstorming for the significant event. While in my opinion typical activities such as performances, forums and lectures on art should be taken into consideration. The festival itself is an image-creating undertaking. Students should be attracted to the festival at the first glimpse, so the opening ceremony must be of vital importance. Fascinating performances, for instance, pop music, ballet dancing and instrument playing ought to be put on in this section and if possible an orchestra can be invited to add spice to the ceremony. Certainly only performances are too superficial. To help students take a deeper insight of arts, forums and lectures must be held. Forums can be held through BBS owning to the wide accessibility to Internet, whereas professors and experts can be invited to give lectures concerning basic knowledge of art and the role that art plays in daily life. However, prior to all the above, professional organization, detailed plans and effective promulgation are needed to promise a success.

A university arts festival, in brief, must embrace rich content and careful preparation. Only then can it be successful and can everyone enjoy himself.

Letter Writing Will Not Be Killed

Nowadays, young people choose to phone each other rather writing letters. But even if so, I still maintain that letter writing will never be killed by phones, though we have stepped into the Information Age.

Firstly, letters can express your subtle feelings. With the increase of the living pace of modern society, we find that there is a lack of communication now. Sometimes when you are speaking to someone that you care and love on the phone, you are so shy that it’s too hard to express any of your feelings towards him/her. Your throat seems to be blocked! At this time, letters will help. Without any embarrassment, you can just write down your deep concern and love on a piece of paper. When you drop the letter into the pillar-box, you will feel what he/she will receive is not only a letter, but also your deepest love.

Secondly, letters can be kept as a record of memory, while phones cannot. Just imagine when you open an old box of letters and read them years later, a lot of beautiful and indelible memories will be brought back to you. What an irreplaceable feeling it is! And I believe, this feeling is something that you can definitely never experience through several phone calls.

All in all, letter writing will absolutely survive and even thrive in the Information Age. Phones can never kill it, neither will anything.

THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING A GOOD MOOD

People in modern society live under a lot of pressure. There are three kinds of pressure working on people today: pressure from education, family and career. It is easy to blame the school for charging too much money, the family members for the heavy burden, and the society for the fierce competition. It is universally acknowledged/ There is public perception people should relax. It is important for them to keep a good mood under whatever circumstances.

Long gone are the days when people lived their life with a certain relaxation, sampling a wide

variety of activities—film, music, art, poetry. But now, a lot of people suffer from a lot of pressure. They can’t communicate well with co-workers and family members, and have unbalanced, one-dimensional lives. Some people complain of symptoms of stress, for instance, loss of appetite, a complete sense of exhaustion, insomnia and low morale. Thus have destructive effect on their health. People tend to lose temper easil y, and this may interfere personal relationship. What’s more, a high rate of suicide may warn people of their emotional well-being.

To be a healthy person physically and psychologically, one should keep a good mood, according to some psychology experts. Those little things may seem relatively insignificant—reading mystery novels, playing volleyball, spending time with family and friends, maintaining your emotional well-being, getting plenty of rest, going fishing. They can help you keep a good mood.

The Best Way to Stay Health

Nowadays, the desire for good health is universal. Wherever you are and whatever you do, staying healthy is always important. With the improvement of our living standards, people are attaching more and more importance to their health. However, which do you think is the best way to keep healthy? Different people come up with different views: eating green food, doing outdoor exercises or going to hospital for medical treatment frequently. As far as I am concerned, the best way to keep healthy is to develop a good quality of psychology.

According to some surveys, nowadays, most patients are not physically sick but mentally ill. The burden on their shoulders is much heavier than others, so they can’ t step out of the shadow of depression and sadness. They need to release their spirit to the nature.

Besides, if you have developed a good quality of psychology, you’ll become more sociable and thus more willing to play your part in the society. Enrolling for some keep-fit clubs or joining some travel agency, which by themselves are various versions of physical exercise, will benefit you a lot.

As a poem says, youth is not a period of time; it’s a state of mind. Everybody wants to keep young at heart because youth is a symbol for endless energy and passion for living.

Keep a good quality of mind, or keep a sense of humor, to be precise, even if you are 80, and you’ll never be old.

Travel broadens the mindSample A:

Nowadays, travel has become a popular activity. Many people are rich enough to afford a travel at home or abroad. As a matter of fact, travel has become part of our life. The increasing popularity of travel is, among others, due to the following reason: travel broadens our minds to an extent which may not be reached previously.

For example, if we travel to Africa, we will find a culture totally different from that of ours, and people who think and live in a way unimaginable for us before we set foot on the continent. And we will marvel at the natural wonders, historic miracles and cultural brilliances we find there. All these experiences help to broaden our minds. As a result, our misunderstanding about the continent, if any, will be weeded out, our perspective of seeing the world possibly changed, our mode of thinking altered and, above all, our mind broadened.

Reading makes an erudite博学的man; practicing a capable man; and traveling a broad-minded

man.

Sample B:

Travel has many benefits to offer. It enriches our experiences and helps us know more about the world, aside from relaxing ourselves both physically and psychologically.

To begin with, travel is one of the best ways to enrich our experiences. If we visit tourist attractions and historical or cultural relics at different places of our country or foreign lands, we will meet different people, enjoy exotic natural sceneries, have a taste of varied cultures and, in the long run, enrich our knowledge. Moreover, travel also helps to enlighten and broaden our minds, since it provides us with new perspectives through what we learn from other cultures. For example, it helps to reduce cultural prejudice after we have got a better understanding of civilizations that vary sharply from one another.

Travel is gaining increasing popularity among us. We travel to relax ourselves, enrich our experiences and broaden our minds.

The importance of extracurricular activities

College is a place to raise all-round intellectuals, which means that life on campus should consist of diverse activities rather than mere academic studies; and that’s why extracurricular activities become important.

For one thing, extracurricular activities can provide students with real-life experience in decision-making and problem-solving, through which some specific knowledge or skills are required. For example, the development of leadership skills occurs as students assume ownership for the success of their organization. Such experience will help them more about themselves and point the way to their future career. For another, participation in extracurricular activities will enable students to develop a balance between academic accomplishments and social development. This necessary balance will greatly aid each student to more successfully encounter the challenges of our contemporary society. Moreover, participating in extracurricular activities could also boost students’ development of interpersonal relationship. The awareness of responsibility, cooperation and punctuality, are fostered as each student interacts with other members of their group.

In short, extracurricular activities are vital because they could help students explore their interests and talents, teach them to manage their time and know their limits, as well as fit them in with other students.

专四作文样题 (2016年发布) 第一部分:原题 PART VI WRITING [45 MIN] Should we review traditional Chinese characters or continue using simplified characters? This has been an intensely discussed question for years. The following are the supporters' and opponents' opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Yes No Traditional characters, which date back to more than 2000 years ago, have a more beautiful appearance and a more reasonable structure. As indicated by the 親and 愛examples, traditional characters make more sense, convey traditional values and can therefore represent traditional culture. For two millennia, Chinese historical records and classic works were written in traditional characters. To be able to read them and inherit traditional cultures, we need to bring traditional characters back. Politically, it is also necessary to restore traditional Chinese characters. Currently, traditional characters are still in use in Hong Kong, Taiwan and many Chinese communities around the world. Restoring them can contribute to cross-Strait exchanges and national reunifications and unite Chinese people around the world. In today’s world, efficiency matters most. Traditional characters, which usually have more strokes than simplified ones, are more difficult to learn. By contrast, simplified characters are much easier to learn and use. Over the past 50 years, lots of classic texts have been turned into simplified-character versions, which means simplified characters can also promote and preserve traditional culture. Constant simplification has been a trend in the evolution of Chinese characters. From the oracle bones script of 3000 years ago to traditional characters, the Chinese writing system has always been slimming down for better communication.

专八写作热点话题范文三例 Private cars With the fantastic spur both in industry and in economy in China, the number of people who own private cars is on the rise. Some people have bought cars of their own, and others are planning to buy cars. But there have been two quite different views on this phenomenon. Some claim that there are many advantages brought about by cars. First, the automobile industry provides jobs for countless workers and strong support for other industries. Second, if conditions permit, owning a car can make us work more efficiently. Finally, life will become more convenient. A car allows one to move freely and with a car there is no need to wait for the bus in the cold or under the burning sun. However, others strongly object to the increase in developing private cars. They hold that automobiles will give rise to a series of problems. In the first place, as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. Next, private cars contribute to traffic congestion so greatly that the advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled out by the frustration caused by traffic jams. The last problem is the increasing number of car accidents that have killed and will kill a lot of people in a friction of a second. In my opinion, although automobiles have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of our society, they also bring us numerous troubles such as more serious environmental pollution, more traffic accidents and more angry consumption. They drink up huge amounts of fuel and throw out huge amounts of pollutants. Traffic accidents kill thousands and thousands of people each year and cripple more. Jams waste our precious time. Therefore I am against developing private cars. Studying Abroad: Hardships and Rewards There is no denying the fact that studying abroad is a hotly debated topic today. Obviously, studying abroad has a number of rewards/advantages. In the first place, a student can have access to advanced science and technology as well as desirable working conditions which might not be available at home. In the second place, he can be exposed to entirely new ideas and trends. Last but not least, by living and studying in a foreign country, one can improve his foreign

专四 历年作文真题及范文汇总(TEM4 WRITNG)

1990 – 2011 (TEM4WRITNG)历年英语专业四级作文真题及范文汇总 2011—COMPOSITION: Recently government agencies in some big cities have been studying the possibility of putting a "pollution tax" on private cars. The amount of tax private car owners would have to pay would depend on the emission levels, i.e. engine or vehicle size. This has caused quite a stir among the public. Some regard it as an effective way to control the number of cars and reduce pollution in the city. But others don't think so. What is your opinion?Should Private Car Owners be Taxed for Pollution?(200 words) One possible version: Should Private Car Owners be Taxed for Pollution? With the development of society, many people can afford a car. As the number of the cars is rising, we are facing some problems. One big problem is the pollution caused by the use of cars. In order to solve the problem, government agencies in some big cities recently suggest that a “pollution tax” should be put on private cars to control the number of cars and reduce pollution in the city. For my part, I agree to this viewpoint, and my reasons are as follows: Firstly, cars contribute to the environmental pollution. For example, lots of big cities in China are now plagued by serious air pollution. Then it is the responsibility of these private car owners to pay for the pollution and they should be taxed. The purpose of collecting environmental pollution tax is to raise the fund, and then utilize the tax revenue lever to protect our environment.Secondly, it is a good way to raise people’s environmental awareness by putting a pollution tax on private cars. Sincerely yours, Sally 2010—COMPOSITION: It was recently reported in a newspaper that six students who shared a dorm at a university hired a cleaner to do laundry and cleaning once a week. And each of them paid her 60 yuan a month. This has led to a heated debate as to whether college students should hire cleaners. Should College Students Hire Cleaners?(200 words) One possible version: Should College Students Hire Cleaners? It’s a popular phenomenon nowadays that college students would hire cleaners to help do the laundry and clean their dormitories, which has sparked a heated debate among students, parents and teachers. In my point of view, such practice should not be encouraged on campus. To begin with, college students should have the capacity for the basic laundry and cleaning work. Doing family chores is a simple way to cultivate independence. If college students can’t even do the most basic things in their life, how c an they handle big challenges under pressure in the future? In addition, college students should feel shamed of disposing of their parents’ hard-earned money in this way. Since a large proportion of their living expenses and tuition are covered by their parents, hiring cleaners could be considered a waste of money. Finally, I do not agree with those who claim they hire cleaners for the sake of either study or saving time. This is a mere excuse for their sloth and overreliance. In summary, hiring cleaners should be discouraged on campus, where students are supposed to cultivate a sense of responsibility and independence rather than become lazy parasites.
