I don't ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it's like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes.

At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement-jobs, research papers, awards-was viewed through the lens of gender(性别) politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus(相对于) right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind.

Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations: I don't talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn't want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don't study sociology or political theory.

Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women's college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how may of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don't dismiss those concerns. Still, I don't tell them “war”stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that's a sight worth talking about.

1.Why doesn't the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?

A) She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields.

B) She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination.

C) She is not good at telling stories of the kind.

D) She finds space research more important.

2.From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would attribute the author's failures to ________.

A) the very fact that she is a woman

B) her involvement in gender politics

C) her over-confidence as a female astrophysicist

D) the burden she bears in a male-dominated society

3.What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research?

A) Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.

B) Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.

C) People's stereotyped attitude toward female scientists.

D) Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurtured.

4.Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?

A) Female students no longer have to bother about gender issues.

B) Her students' performance has brought back her confidence.

C) Her female students can do just as well as male students.

D) More female students are pursuing science than before.

5.What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?

A) Women students needn't have the concerns of her generation.

B) Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.

C) Women can balance a career in science and having a family.

D) Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.

I don't ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again,以“again”一词造成悬疑,引起读者对原因的探究,而后整个第一段叙述了相对于这一again的上一次作者面对性别问题时的态度;并解释了原因是兴趣不在于此(I never found them interesting)。

第二段开始初步为“again”释疑,叙述了考试&大作者从最初对性别问题的超然态度(it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom)转变为积极捍卫女性利益态度(I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind)的过程。

Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don't study sociology or political theory这一问一答可以看出,虽然多年过去,但作者用以对付性别问题这一心理重担的利器依然是兴趣(don't study sociology or political theory)。

(45 women driven by a love of science)。

B,She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination,我认为这个结论有待商榷。

(It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19),这也是题目中使用again的原因。

19岁时完全超脱(it did not bother me in the least),麻省理工求学及之后研究时开始受到干扰(the issue started to bother me),这种干扰就是作者所有的成就:工作、研究论文、获奖,都受到性别偏见这副有色眼镜的过滤(viewed through the lens of gender politics),而后作者写了一句So were my failures,so在这里是代指,指代viewed through the lens of gender politics,即my failures were also viewed through the lens of gender politics,意思就是人们是从性别政治的角度看待她的失败,也就是认为她的失败是由性别偏见引起的。

It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 ,但这

世人戴着性别的有色眼镜看她(was viewed through the lens of gender politics),但这也仅仅是一种态度罢了,还没到指责、责难的地步。

But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me这句开始,讲述了作者面对世人成见时如何挺身而出、为女性仗义执言。

Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women's college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45,汉译为:我现在在纽约一所女子大学Barnard做研究和教书,最近有人问我,我的班级里45名学生中有多少个女生。

19岁时,她是班里唯一的女生(the only woman in the classroom),做研究后,人们总是问她在一个男性主导的领域里工作的情形(the only woman in the classroom work in a field dominated by men)。

I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children,意思是作者知道有些学生还是为科研与家庭之间如何平衡而忧虑。

I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments,身怀六甲的物理教授依然在做物理实验。 I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children,一些学生担心不能很好地处理科研与生育孩子之间的平衡。 而在这句话之后,作者给出了结果:in turn they have given me the image of 45 women

driven by a love of science,45个学生完全投入到科学之爱中。

强转折:通常由“but, yet, however”引导。

Small Schools Rising This year's list of the top 100 high schools shows that today, those with fewer students are flourishing. Fifty years ago, they were the latest thing in educational reform: big, modern, suburban high schools with students counted in the thousands. As baby boomers(二战后婴儿潮时期出生的人) came of high-school age, big schools promised economic efficiency. A greater choice of courses, and, of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved: the creation of excessive bureaucracies(官僚机构),the difficulty of forging personal connections between teachers and students.SAT scores began dropping in 1963;today,on average,30% of students do not complete high school in four years, a figure that rises to 50% in poor urban neighborhoods. While the emphasis on teaching to higher, test-driven standards as set in No Child Left Behind resulted in significantly better performance in elementary(and some middle)schools, high schools for a variety of reasons seemed to have made little progress. Size isn't everything, but it does matter, and the past decade has seen a noticeable countertrend toward smaller schools. This has been due ,in part ,to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has invested $1.8 billion in American high schools, helping to open about 1,000 small schools-most of them with about 400 kids each with an average enrollment of only 150 per grade, About 500 more are on the drawing board.

1、听力 (1)使用具有增加信息接受方注意力功能的词汇,例如most, only, just, particularly, really, new, free, famous, strange , unusual, surprise, shocked, always , each, ever, every, little, few, any, nothing, full of, complete, throughout, all, almost, nearly, total, i mportant, must, stress, note, notice, range, insist, add , laugh, desperation, horror, fear, disaster, ke y, minimum等等; (2)使用特殊结构及句式,例如比较级、最高级、as…as结构、not so…as结构、different from、similar to、强调结构、否定结构、感叹句、if丛句、完成进行时态、as…as possible、make it clear that、you can imagine that、don’t forget that等结构; (3)含有数字、时间及相关词汇的句子,例如first(start, pioneer), second, millions of, figure, many, one day, years ago, today等等; (4)重复和自问自答; (5)引用:语气语调一般会有明显的变化。 因果原则: 含有表示因果关系的词汇的句子,命题的可能性很大,这些词汇包括because, why, reason, so, as a result, as a sign of, thanks to, therefore, due to等等。 首先要注意听表示转折关系的词汇,例如but、however、unfortunately、unexpectedly、to tell the truth 等。 在对话题中,往往会有一些表示建议或劝告的句子,例如“Why…?”“Why…not…?”“Why don’t you/we…?”“It would be better to do...”“Wouldn’t it be better to do…?”

如2005年1月份考题:“Free play has been introduced in some

Japanese kindergartens in order to”, 本题通过“free play”,“some Japanese kindergartens”反映了原文考查对象,题干内容比较具体,属于细节分析。又如2005年6月份出现的题目:“What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves? 如“What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves? What was confirmed by the Boston University Medical Center’s study?

As a manager, Tiffany is responsible for interviewing applicants for some of the positions with her company .During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,” Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different” behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding . He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting(避开) your eyes. “I was just thrown off by the lack of ye contact; not realizing it was cultural,” Tiffany says. “I missed out ,but will not miss that opportunity again.” Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our under-standing of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions . Hire Advantage At a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult ,employers who can eliminate invalid biases(偏爱) from the process have a distinct advantage .My company, Mindsets LLC ,helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots .
