Passage 1

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

Education achievement is a vital measure of any society's level of development. In modern times, universal literacy for all social groups has become the goal of all nations, and education has been recognized as a right of both women and men. Apart from the absolute benefits that education brings to women, women's education benefits society. Studies have shown that women's education is closely

related to children's health outcomes ( 结果) and other social development indicators. Education and

training increase women's opportunities in the modern economic sector by better qualifying them for well paid employment. Education also expands women's life choices beyond marriage and child-raising.

Arab countries have made great advances in improving literacy rate in the past two decades for both men and women. However, women still remain behind men. In most countries the urban-rural contrast in female literacy is still great, creating an increasing gap of development opportunities for women within the same country.

Overall, the difference between male and female literacy rates is greater in lower-income countries, which suggests that when resources are scarce male education takes precedence( 领先)over female education. The lower social value of girls' education causes high dropout rates among those who come from poor families.

Girls may also be removed from school to care for the younger or to be married at a young age. But a problem facing women and men alike is that the content of education is often

unrelated to the needs of the labor market--so much so that some rural families prefer not to send

their children to school, where they will lose useful agricultural skills and emerge with unmarketable

knowledge.

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

When the computer magazine Byte was started in 1975, there was no such thing as the personal

computer, and virtually no competition in the computer publishing market. For

23years, as the

computer revolution changed society, the magazine held on, despite the emergence of a number of rival publications. But those changes finally caught up with Byte. The monthly magazine and three other computer publications were sold by McGraw-will Hill Inc. to CMP Media Inc, and its editors and

Byte's circulation has fallen to a recent average of 442, 553 from 522,795 in 1996. Advertising has also fallen. Uphoff, a vice president at CMP, said CMP would revitalize Byte under a new business model

and improved editorial focus. Byte was a personal computing magazine aimed at technical professionals and others who wanted very serious, in-depth reporting, on technology. It was known for its influence on the computer industry and its new writing style.

For those who were involved in computer publishing long before computers were as popular as

they are now. byte's suspension() was treated as the end of an era. "It's unfortunate," said Carl

Passage 4

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the

following passage:

Oceanography has been defined as ― The application of all sciences to the study of the sea‖.

Before the nineteen century, scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between. Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work.

For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let

alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that question ―What is at the bottom of the

oceans?‖ had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph

cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers had to know the depth profile

of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be manufactured.

It was to Maury of the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned,

in 1853, for

information on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings ( 测声) were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea.

The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the

early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in

living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea.

Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition (考察), which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples from the sea. Their classification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895.

How men first learned to invent words is 61 in other words, the 62 of language is amystery. 63 we really know is that men, 64 animals, somehow invented certain sounds toexpress thoughts and

66 certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to 67those sounds and which could be written down.

Those sounds, whether 68 , or written in letters,we call words. The power of words, then, lies in

their associations---the things they 69 before our minds.Words become filled with meaning for us by

and 71 during an important ceremony at the royal court. 72 the word ―etiquette‖began to indicate a system of correct manners for people to follow. 73 this meaning, the word passed into English.

Consider the word ―breakfast‖ . ―To fast ‖ is to go for some period of time without 74 . Thus in

the morning after many hours 75 the night without food, one 76 one’s fast.

Consider the everyday English 77 ―Good-bye‖. Many many y ears ago, people would say to

The details of the settlement make clear that Facebook, which 4 over 800m users, betrayed its users’ trust.

考研英语翻译模拟试题及答案(一) Directions: Read the following passage carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation must be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. Economics, as we know it, is the social science concerned with the production, distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods and services. Economists focus on the way in which individuals, groups, business enterprises, and governments seek to achieve efficiently any economic objective they select. (46) Other fields of study also contribute to this knowledge: Psychology and ethics try to explain how objectives are formed, history records changes in human objectives, and sociology interprets human behavior in social contexts. Standard economics can be divided into two major fields. (47) The first, price theory or microeconomics, explains how the interplay of supply and demand in competitive markets creates a multitude of individual prices, wage rates, profit margins, and rental changes. Microeconomics assumes that people behave rationally. Consumers try to spend their income in ways that give them as much pleasure as possible. As economists say, they maximize utility. For their part, entrepreneurs seek as much profit as they can extract from their operations.

(2) There is no question that science-fiction writers have become more ambitious, stylistically and thematically, in recent years. (1) (But this may have less to do with the luring call of academic surroundings than with changing market conditions —a factor that academic critics rarely take into account.) Robert Silverberg, a former president of The Science Fiction Writers of America, is one of the most prolific professionals in a field dominated by people who actually write for a living. (Unlike mystery or Western writers, most science-fiction writers cannot expect to cash in on fat movie sales or TV tie-ins.) (2) (Still in his late thirties, Silverberg has published more than a hundred books, and he is disarmingly frank about the relationship between the quality of genuine prose and the quality of available outlet. )By his own account, he was “an annoyingly verbal young man ” from Brooklyn who picked up his first science-fiction book at the age of ten, started writing seriously at the age of thirteen, and at seventeen nearly gave up in despair over his inability to break into the pulp magazines. (3)( At his parents ’ urging, he enrolled in Columbia University, so that, if worst came to worst, he could always go to the School of Journalism and “get a nice steady job somewhere ”.) During his sophomore year, he sold his first science-fiction story to a Scottish magazine named Nebula. By the end of his junior year, he had sold a novel and twenty more stories. (4) (By the end of his senior year, he was earning two hundred dollars a week writing science fiction, and his parents were reconciled to his pursuit of the literary life. )“I became very cynical very quickly,” he says. First I couldn ’t sell anything, then I could sell everything. The market played to my worst characteristics. An editor of a schlock magazine would call up to tell me he had a ten-thousand-word hole to fill in his next issue. I ’d fill it overnight for a hundred and fifty dollars. I found that rewriting made no difference. (5)( I knew I could not possibly write the kinds of things I admired as a reader —Joyce, Kafka, Mann —so I detached myself from my work.) I was a phenomenon among my friends in college, a published, selling author. But they always asked, “When are you going to do something serious?” —meaning something that wasn ’t science fiction —and I kept telling them, “ When I ’m financially secure.”

(1)(In classical physics, the mass of an object had always been associated with an indestructible material substance, with some “stuff” of which all things were thought to be made.)Relativity theory showed that mass has nothing to do with any substance, but is a form energy. Energy, however, is a dynamic quantity associated with activity, or with processes.(2)(The fact that the mass of a particle is equivalent to a certain of energy means that the particle can no longer be seen as a static object, but has to be conceived as a dynamic pattern, a process involving the energy which manifest itself as the particle’s mass.) (3)(This new view of particles was initiated by Dirac when he formulated a relativistic equation describing the behavior of electrons.) Dirac’s theory was not only extremely successful in accounting for the fine details of atomic structure, but also revealed a fundamental symmetry between matter and anti-matter. It predicted the existence of an anti-matter with the same mass as the electron but with an opposite charge. This positively charged particle, now called the positron, was indeed discovered two years after Dirac had predicted it. The symmetry between matter and anti-matter implies that for every particle there exists an antiparticles with equal mass and opposite charge. Pairs of particles and antiparticles can be created if enough energy is available and can be made to turn into pure energy in the reverse process of destruction.(4)(These processes of particle creation and destruction had been predicted from Dirac’s theory before they were actually discovered in nature, and since then they have been observed millions of times.) The creation of material particles from pure energy is certainly the most spectacular effect of relativity theory, and it can only be understood in terms of the view of particles outlined above.(5)(Before relativistic particle physics, the constituents of matter had always been considered as being either elementary units which were indestructible and unchangeable, or as composite objects which could be broken up into their constituent parts)and the basic question was whether one could divide matter again and again, or whether one would finally arrive at some smallest indivisible units.

A black hole in the universe is not a solid object, like a planet, but it is shaped like a sphere. Astronomers think that at the center of a black hole there is a single point in space with infinite density. This single point is called a singularity. If the singularity theory is correct, it means that when a massive star collapses, all the material in it disappears into the singularity. The center of a black hole would not really be a hole at all, but an infinitely dense point. Anything that crosses the black hole is pulled in by its great gravity. Although black holes do exist, they are difficult to observe. These are the reasons. ● No light or anything else comes out of black holes. As a result, they are invisible to a telescope. ● In astronomical terms, black holes are truly. For example, a black hole formed by the collapse of a giant star would have an event horizon only 18 miles across. ● The nearest black holes would be dozens of light years away from Earth. One light year is about 6 trillion miles. Even the most powerful telescopes could not pick out an object so small at such a great distance. In 1994 the Hubble Space Telescope provided evidence that black holes exist. There are still answers to be found, however, so black holes remain one of the mysteries of the universe. 1. Black holes are part of space. A. True B. False C. Not Given 2. Black holes exist but are difficult to observe. A. True B. False C. Not Given 3. The black hole is shapeless as it is not a solid subject. A. True B. False C. Not Given 4. The center of a black hole is empty.
