August Dietz had a very clear vision in 2005. He says it was as if he saw a plane flying in the skies before him, and it was carrying a long red banner（横幅）saying "Go to China". The 83-year-old retired engineering teacher from Arizona, United States, obeyed the call, and he has been teaching English in Yangshuo as a volunteer for the last seven years.

Before coming to China, he spent much time on the Internet checking the possibilities and made a long list of Chinese telephone numbers, behind which he believed were jobs for him. He called the first number and an English-speaking Chinese businessman operating foreign language schools in Yangshuo answered his call. "Something strange happened and there was immediate chemistry between us," he recalls. "He said he could not hire me but asked if I would consider coming to teach English as a volunteer." He arrived in Yangshuo in late 2006.

His family had lived in different countries. He once worked as an air defense system technician first in the Caribbean in the 1950s and later as a consultant for the US air force headquarters in Europe in the 1960s. "My initial attitude was that 'the people on the islands were poor and I am a rich American'. Later, I realized how ashamed I was because I found out that the local people knew more about how to live in difficult conditions than Americans. Scientists believe that people "dressed up" long before they made a habit of wearing clothes. Primitive man dressed himself in feathers, painted his body or wrapped himself in animal skins. It was probably some time before man discovered than decorations kept him warm and protected him from various injuries.

When primitive people began to wear clothing regularly, they had to make it from the materials at hand. In cold regions, they often used skins of animals as protection against the cold. In warmer regions people dressed themselves in clothing made from leaves, tree bark and grass. Some people scraped the hair from animal skins to make soft leather for their clothes.

Linen was the first woven material from which clothes were made. From very early times, man has known how to make flax into fine linen. In fact, over 4,000 years ago, Egyptians grew flax along the banks of the Nile River. They learned how to make thread from the fiber of the flax plant. Egyptian and Jewish priests, who lived in warm lands, wore fine linen clothing at religious festivals. The Egyptians wound their mummies in bands of linen before placing them into the tombs. Fine linen was also worn by the wealthy Greeks of ancient times.

Wool was probably the second woven material for clothes because sheep can live in many different climates and are easy to raise. They have been raised in many parts of the world for their meat and wool. We don’t know when people first thought of cutting off the sheep’s wool. However, we do know that, very early in history, rich and poor people alike were wearing wool clothes. Amusingly, sheep’s wool wasn’t the only wool used by early man. The people of northern India and Tibet wove the fleece of the Cashmere goat into soft warm clothing and the South American Indians made clothes from the wool of Hama, their beast of burden.
