Though impressive, works of sand art are temporary masterpieces that disappear with the first large wave of rain. However, Tim Bengel's sand art is permanent. That's because the German artist uses the sand to “paint” his masterpieces on canvas (帆布). While the final product is certainly brilliant, what is even more so is the way it is created.

Bengel begins by covering a blank canvas with a special glue that dries extremely slowly giving the artist ample time to draw the desired image. He then begins “painting” with grains of black sand and in some cases, gold foil. It takes the young man anywhere from 80 to 300 hours to complete each work of art.

What is most interesting about Bengel's process is that only the artist knows what the image is. To the rest of the world, the canvas appears to be a mess of black sand. It is only when Bengel spreads white sand over the canvas and then dramatically sweeps off all the surplus sand that the masterpiece is shown!

The talented artist says his interest in the subject began after he visited the Stuttgart Art Museum as a child. Bengel was so inspired that he came home and began trying to reproduce the paintings he had seen at the museum. After winning an art competition at school at the age of 18, Bengel knew that it was the career he wanted to pursue. But the young man also realized that to be successful, he would have to develop his own unique style.

A few years ago, Bengel came up with his sand art idea. He says his first few paintings were a total disaster. But after some practice, he managed to perfect his sand art skills and was soon creating the masterpieces that have made the young artist world famous.

After four months' running, the national children's singing competition has come to an end in Beijing, but the wonderful songs and music still remain in the air.

One of the ideas growing out of the event is to sing China's Tang poems. The movement has given great inspiration to those who compose songs for children.

Excerpts from well-known poems of Li Bai, one of China's greatest poets, are perfectly mixed with music of the 21st century. As these children sing, it's how they find pictures and songs in the ancient poems.

Reading Poems of Tang Dynasty is a golden award winner of the 2007 national composing competition for children's songs. Winning again at this year's nationwide children's singing competition, the song will be collected in an album which contains another 20 pieces inspired by the famous ancient poems.

Famous composer Gu Jianfen says there's no better way to attract the younger generation than singing, especially when asking them to memorize the legacy of ancestors.

Gu Jianfen said, “When we recorded the song, we discovered how involved the children were. Their sincere feelings and true thoughts let us learn the innocence of young hearts. For me, nothing is more precious than this.”

Singing is also one great way for those young minds to sing out their gratitude to their parents, teachers and those who care for them. Those kinds of songs have taken a big slice of the winning pieces at this year's competition.

Many Chinese people have awakened their interest in classical Chinese poetry recently thanks to a popular TV show that aims to “appreciate classical Chinese poetry, explore cultural genes and enjoy the beauty of life” by combining traditional literary form with light-hearted TV quizzes.

The ten-episode Chinese Poetry Competition, since its broadcast, has been praised for injecting vitality (活力) into TV programmes with fantastic performances of the contestants,impressive comments from judges as well as its innovative interactive mode. In the show, poems can be adapted into songs or depicted (描绘) through artistic pictures. Any contestant who can memorize the latest number of poems may not necessarily be the final winner, while fast reaction and usage of poems matter a lot more in the competition.

Wu Yishu, a 16-year-old student from the High School Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, is the champion of this season. Her rich knowledge of classical poetry impressed everyone and she rose to become famous online. In an earlier episode, Wu wowed the audience when performing in a section. She amazingly recited lines from the Classic of Poetry(《诗经》),the earliest collection of poems in China.

“Learning poems isn't about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one's view of life and developing one's inner world,” said Li Bo, an expert guest at the Chinese Poetry Competition's second season.

When it comes to teaching people about poetry, Li Dingguang, the show's academic advisor, suggested that teachers should explain more about the beauty of poetry from both the aesthetic (审美的) and emotional sides, and guide students to lose themselves in the poems,rhythmic and rhyming (押韵的) lines.

“Although the proportion (比例) of ancient Chinese poems in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools has increased, many students still learn them for exams,” Li Dingguang said. “Therefore, it's important to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry.”
