The winter holiday we are looking forward to is drawing near. The past holidays brought me many wonderful memories. The most unforgettable experience is the party held two days before the Spring Festival last year to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary of my grandparents. Before the party, I made a careful plan for it with my parents. All our relatives got together for this special occasion, when my cousins and I gave my grandparents some nice handmade presents. My grandparents were so happy that they sang and danced like a young couple.

As a Senior 3 student, the coming winter holiday is sure a busy one. I'll make good use of it to work hard at my lessons, getting ready for the college entrance examinations. I'll also try to spare some time to do some exercise to keep fit. In addition, I can watch my favourite TV Festival, I'll visit my grandparents and help them prepare food for the family get-together.

I hope I'll have a joyful and fruitful holiday.

Recently, we had a discussion on how to make learning English relaxing and fun. Most students believe that there are many ways to do so. First of all, we can have more interactive activities in class, such as discussions, interviews, story-telling and role-play. In this way, we can have more fun learning English. Secondly, we can take part in more out-of-class activities like English speech contests and English evenings. Through these activities we can improve our English skills in an easy and relaxing way. Thirdly, we need to find more opportunities to communicate in English with people, whether they are English teachers or classmates, foreigners or Chinese, because using English is the best way to learn.

These ideas sound reasonable and practical. From my experience, there are many other interesting and relaxing ways. For example, we can listen to English songs and watch English movies. We can also watch English programs on TV or join English clubs or make English pen-friends on the Internet.

All in all, what we need is more free time and more space.

Dear Xiaolin,

Thank you for writing us about your problems with your parents. I'm glad you love your parents and want to get on well with them. Y ou think they don't understand you and don't let you do what you want to do.

My question is whether you understand your parents. I think your parents are right in getting you to do housework. In fact, they are preparing you for your future family life. As a student, you should devote most of your time to studies. It is their duty to urge you to spend more time on your studies. What you're learning in school today will determine whether you can meet the greatest challenges in the future.

My suggestion is that you try your best to do well in your studies and help with the housework as much as you can. In doing so, I'm sure your parents won't be hard on you and will allow you to practise your hobbies.

Best wishes,

Dr. Wang

Health Care Reform

From the picture, we can see that the old man was suffering from heart trouble. He had to go to hospital for treatment. When he saw the medical bill from the hospital, which was far beyond what he could afford, he was so shocked that he couldn't stand on his feet. It was really another heart attack for him.

At present, many people can't afford heavy medical fees. Because of this, they may get into debt in order to get proper medical treatment or have to wait helplessly for the last day of their life. This situation may do harm to the harmony of our society and eventually interfere with the development of our country.

Therefore, we strongly call for health care reform. The government should build up a favorable medical care system so that every person can afford their medical care and can enjoy their life as long as possible.

Dear My Past Self,

I am now studying in Xiamen University and I am satisfied with my present conditions actually. This university provides very flexible study environment for me to purse my dream. Also, freedom of arranging time by myself contributes much to my physical and mental development. I do believe I will be successful in my future life.

In fact, I owe all these to your hard and effective work in Senior Grade 3. Almost every day, you would study late into night, sacrificing much of the pleasure of relaxing and entertaining yourself. In addition, with the help of your teachers and classmates, you formed a good habit of "asking more, thinking more", which benefits me even in university study.

However, every coin has its two sides. It's a pity that too many exam-oriented exercises you did cost the time for building up your body and broadening your vision. If only you had read various kinds of books and developed some healthy hobbies such as playing basketball and joining some clubs.

Y ours sincerely,

My Present Self

One possible version:

We can see in this cartoon that the parents of a student are meeting with their child’s teacher.

Fro m their expression and words, we can imagine that they are talking about their child’s being rude to the other kids at school. Obviously, the parents are very angry, but not because their child has been rude to others, but because the teacher “has called their child rude”. What they do exactly accounts for their child’s performance at school. What an example they have set to their child! They are rude to the teacher, so it’s no wonder that their child is impolite to others.

To my mind, parents are the first teachers of their children. Parents must be cautious of whatever they say or do in or out of their home because their children are learning from them both consciously and unconsciously. Not only do they have to take care of their children’s life and study but also they must teach them how to conduct themselves.

As is reported in the first half of 2010 over 70,000 fires broke out nationwide causing 656 deaths and 271 injuries. The terrible fire of last November in Jing’an District, Shanghai also claimed 53 lives. All these have taught us a good lesson. How can we survive a fire if it happens?

First of all, stay calm. Panic solves no problem. Only by keeping calm can you gain hope of survival. At the same time, find the nearest door or exit and get out as quickly as possible. If there is too much smoke, wet a cloth and cover it over your mouth and nose before rushing out. Keep close to the floor since the higher you are, the heavier smoke there will be.

If the door is surrounded with fire and you are on the 1st or 2nd floor, try to climb out through the window. But if you are above 3rd floor, you have to be more cautious since careless jump may lead to serious injuries or even death. Y ou may tear the curtain to make a rope and climb down carefully.

In a word, be calm and wise, and then you will find a way out.

One possible version:

As is vividly shown in the picture, a country boy is crying helpless in the darkness ,longing eagerly for school education. It implies severe educational problems in some rural areas of China. In contrast, the city boy on the right is enjoying all the benefits.

The comparison indicates the phenomenon of educational inequality in modern China. School-age country children are often dropping out of school due to poverty. Even those who manage to stay in school are still suffering from the low standards of educational facilities and academic qualities. Comparatively, city children have much better opportunities to receive good education. Thus, schools in the countryside generally have much lower enrollment rates than those in the city, which in turn worsens the problem of educational inequality.

To solve this problem, the government should spend more money on the improvement of education in rural areas. Meanwhile, the media can appeal for public donations for rural education. Moreover, all people in the community should be aware of the seriousness of the problem and do whatever to help. Only if we do these can we have more social justice and thus make our society more harmonious.

One possible version:

As can be seen in the cartoon, the young couple educate their child in different ways. Father educates their child with a ruler but Mother with a bar of chocolate. What is illustrated in the picture is that Father is too hard on their child while Mother spoils him. They adopt strikingly inconsistent methods, which makes their child confused.

I subscribe to neither of their education methods. If we always give children severe punishment, they will become nervous and lack self-confidence or become violent and aggressive, following in the father’s footsteps. If we always love children too much, they will turn out to be self-centered and dependent, tending to do whatever they want to.

So far as I am concerned, it is better to use appropriate methods based on children’s individual personalities. Since praise and criticism both play vital roles in children’s education, it is essential that parents should try to maintain the balance between love and strictness. Only in this way can children benefit from proper family education and achieve all-round development.

Dear Li Hua,

Thank you for your email about the question“If you are asked to donate an hour every day, what would you do and why?”I agree with the judg es that your answer is not to the point.

From your reply, I can see you misunderstand the word“donate”, which has something to do with helping others. Y ou may get to the point if the question is put like this:“If you can spend an hour every day helping oth ers, what would you do and why?”

If I were you, I would answer the question like this.

“If I am asked to donate an hour every day, I will do two things. First, I will spend half an hour walking around the school, picking up rubbish. As students we all wish to live and study in a clean environment. Second, I will use another half an hour to help my neighbour's son with his lessons because his parents are too busy to do so. By doing so, I not only help others, but also benefit a lot.”

I hope my answer will be of some help to you.

Best wishes.

How to Be Mentally Healthy

Many of us students now have some mental problems, which worry us much and even have bad effects on both our studies and lives. Some students are so worried about exams and academic achievements that they can’t fall asleep at night. As a result, they feel sleepy in the day time and can’t concentrate in class. Others can’t get along well with their parents or with their classmates. They always feel stressed and easily get angry.

As a matter of fact, there’re many ways for us to deal with our mental problems. First of all, we can turn to our teachers for help, including our teacher of psychology. Secondly, communication is of vital importance. When we have a talk or discussion about our problems with our friends or classmates, we can feel greatly relieved. Lastly but not least, we need to develop a positive attitude towards our studies and our life. Wearing a smile is not only a sign of friendliness but also a cure for bad feelings. I believe these methods will help us live and study happily.

For a time, disposable chopsticks became popular, which caused great damage to forests. But since our country began to ban the use of them in 2004, things have changed.

As is vividly shown in the left cartoon, in the past disposable chopsticks made of wood were often used in our daily life. It is a waste of wood and does harm to the environment. Due to the abuse of disposable chopsticks, many trees were cut down, which resulted in the decrease of the forest.

Since 2004, with the ban of using disposable chopsticks and the awareness of forest protection, people begin to reject using disposable chopsticks. Our government has also taken measures to prevent factories from producing such chopsticks and attach importance to forest conservation. Now disposable chopsticks are out sight and more trees appear.

This teaches us a good lesson. In our daily life, we should try to use less wood and plant more trees so that our resources can be sustainable and our world can be a better place to live in.

Dear schoolmates,

As I am graduating, I'd like to write this letter to express my feelings before leaving school.

In the past three years, I've benefited a lot from my school education, which helps me grow into an independent thinker and an efficient learner, as well as preparing for the future.

However, during this period, I was too concerned about mu academic performance to get actively involved in the extra-curriculum activities. That left me a little regretful but will always remind me to better myself in an all-round way.

Looking ahead, I think the biggest challenge in my college life will ben the adaptation to living apart from my parents and taking care of myself. But I'm full of confidence that I'll get used to it soon and move on.

I also want to make some suggestions to you, Senior 1 and 2 students. Time and tide waits for no man. We teenagers should make the most of our valuable time at high school and realize our potential.

Good luck to all of you!

Y ours,

Li Hua

Parents nowadays tend to set high goals for their children ,yet they don't know how to help them reach the goals. Many of them are really worried and simply don't know how to educate their children.

The cartoon above shows what some parents do when their children fail in school studies. They often burst into anger, scolding or even beating them, while their children in fact are already feeling very sorry for their poor grades. At the same time, some parents may turn to books for help, hoping to find a ready answer. But in fact, what the book says doesn't work in most cases because children are all different - every child has their own way of being smart.

As parents, they should try to communicate with their children, respect and understand them, especially when they are not doing very well in their studies. To some extent, parents are their children's first teachers. Their actions and attitudes may encourage their children to behave in the same way.

In my opinion, parents should set reasonable expectations for their children, rather than give them high pressure.

They should also act as models for their children instead of just giving them 'lectures'.

A good habit, a successful life

A habit is something that you do often or regularly almost without thinking, especially something that is hard to stop doing.

Good habits of learning, such as previewing what you will study, listening to teachers attentively in class, completing given assignments by yourself and reviewing what you’ve learned in time, will he lp you acquire more knowledge and improve your skills. Meanwhile, good habits of living will make you develop soundly, both physically and mentally. Therefore you must attach importance to healthy food, constant exercise, reasonable schedules and eyesight protection.

Good habits contribute to our success. Once a good habit is formed, it will give us power to control ourselves. While we are making efforts to form good habits, we should try to kick bad habits. Though bad habits are hard to get rid of, yet we all know where there is a will, there is a way. If we insist on behaving ourselves properly, we are sure to remove them.

Do remember good habits will give us a successful life.

Walking in almost any big department store, you will find clothes, handbags, shoes and so on made of rare animal skins. As we all know, the precious animal skins used to produce luxurious clothes are popular in markets, which accounts for so many illegal killings.

Some people like to wear and use such things for various reasons. Clothes made of animal skins are comfortable to wear. In winter, fur clothes protect you from the cold and keep you warmer. Carrying a fine bag made of animal skins, you look and feel graceful and superior to others.

It is true that more and more people have come to be aware of the importance of protecting rare animals, but if we can't stop relevant consumption right now, they will die out soon. It has to be admitted that killing still exists because of the profits it promises. This has also led to the decrease of valuable animals. There should be more education work among us. To protect animals is to protect our nature and ourselves.

One possible version:

Recently, parents, students and teachers sometimes care much about test results, especially when kids fail.

Some parents, when their kids fail in an exam, choose to yell at their kids and complain much about present education system while their kids would blame the bad results on teachers. Teachers, who always work hardest, have more complaints like lack of co-operation from parents and less hard work of students. What should be the appropriate attitude towards test results is always under hot discussion. Gladly, most parents nowadays are quite aware of their own responsibilities. They would co-operate more with teachers afterwards and give enough guidance to their kids. Teachers will undoubtedly re-consider and thus improve their teaching methods aiming to increase classroom efficiency. Students will certainly study harder.

In my opinion, it is always the best for family, students and schools to co-operate closely. When kids fail, everybody should be brave enough to bear responsibilities and find practical solutions to avoid similar mistakes. It surely benefits a lot in the construction of a harmonious society as well as forming a friendly relationship between families and schools.

Dear Y ang Lin,

Glad to know you're making progress. I'm also making preparations and I want to say you are not alone there.

Academically, I think we should follow our teachers' advice since they're experienced and always helpful. Moreover, it would be a great idea to focus on your reviewing plans and make some timely adaptations if necessary. For me, what I am doing now is going through the test papers I have finished recently and learning by my mistakes. I find this helps a lot.

As for how to be emotionally ready, keeping believing in yourself, communicating more with parents, and having fun with your peers will help you relax yourself and get through all these. In addition, eat well, sleep well and exercise regularly. Following your established routine can guarantee your good performance in the examinations.

I'm very excited about your travel plan. I can't wait to join you and I'm sure we'll have a great time!

Best of Luck!

The picture shows us a touching moment when a little girl comes to greet her working mom. Realizing her mom must be very tired after a day's work, the girl helps to remove the bag from her shoulder. In response, the mom kneels down to show how happy and thankful she feels.

All this reminds me of my mother who has been doing whatever she could to let me have the best. But, totally engaged in my own study, I seldom pay attention to what mother needs and feels, and always think studying well is the only thing I could do in return. Now I know I can do my bit to help with the everyday washing, bedroom cleaning, or at least prepare breakfast myself, so as to share mother's daily burden. The picture convinces me it is even more important to be a good daughter than a "good" student.

A Suddenly another thought went through Kate’s mind like an electric shock. An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last -she never knew how long it had taken her – she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21. What did Kate decide to do? A. Stop the express train. B. Check the signal light. C. Meet the passengers. D. Visit the station-master. 22. Which of the following words best describes Kate’s journey? A. Fruitless. B. Boring. C. Well-planned. D. Ricky. 23. Why did the station-master turn pale? A. He suddenly fell ill. B. He realized the danger. C. He discovered his mistake. D. He became over-excited. B The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guest will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity – roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guest staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but generally I don’t think people will take advantage of our programme.” Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition an 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website https://www.wendangku.net/doc/7d10874853.html, recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).” If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement. 24. What is the main purpose of the free meal programme? A. To promote the hotel’s green concept. B. To make the city known to the world. C. To attract people to the hotel restaurant. D. To get guests to stay longer at the hotel. 25. How can a participant get a free meal? A. By becoming a professional cyclist. B. By cycling to produce some electricity.
