记得中学时期，身为语文老师的校长曾发表过一篇论文，说临川方言有八个音调，除去普通话里的四声外，还有长音、短音等。还给我们举过几个例子，生活有趣，令人捧腹。今晚闲得没事，在网上瞎转，看到有个论断，说临川方言很可能是保持唐朝音调最原始的语言。还别不服气，有例子为证。例证一：唐代诗人骆宾王的诗—— 鹅鹅鹅，曲项向天歌。白毛浮绿水，红掌拨清波。这首诗如果用普通话朗诵，韵角是不严谨的，有e和o两个韵母。但如果用临川话朗诵，则十分严谨，因为“鹅”“歌”和“波”在临川方言里韵母全是o，奇妙吧？例证二：唐代诗人杜牧的诗《山行》远上寒山石径斜，白云深处有人家。停车坐爱枫林晚，霜叶红于二月花。这首诗用普通话朗诵同样韵角不严谨，因为第一个字韵母是e，而后面是a。但临川话就显得韵角严整了，临川方言中，“斜”念xiá，“家”念gā，“花”念fā。看看整齐吧，韵母全是a，韵角一点毛病都没有！不仅如此，临川方言中还有相当一部分保持了古汉语的风韵。比如：（即一个提手旁，加一个双字，念sǒng），推搡之意；闶（“抗”音），藏；晏，晚；翼，翅膀；啐，吮吸；嗅，闻。、闶、晏、啐等字现在都变成冷僻字了，很少有人用，可这些字在临川方言中随处可见。另外，临川方言中还有相当一部分词汇是单音节，而普通话里却是双音节。比如：禾，水稻；杆，稻草；屋，房子；咀，嘴巴；颈，脖子；面，面条或脸蛋。
