A Hero Born, the first volume of famous Chinese martial arts novelist Jin Yong’s Legends of the Condor Heroes, was on Thursday published in English for the first time.

British publishing house MacLehose bought the rights to the book five years ago and commissioned Anna Holmwood, a professional focused on Chinese-English literary translation, to the translate work. After years of hard work, the 400-page translation, priced at 14.99 pounds ($20.8), finally hit bookstores. “I feel very excited and a little nervous also, of course. It is a big moment for me personally,” Holmwood told Xinhua from her home in Sweden. “If you are a fan of Lord Of The Rings and are looking for the next best thing, A Hero Born is definitely the book for you,” Waterstone, one of Britain’s biggest chain bookstores, said on its website.

Jin Yong(1924-2018) is the pen name of Louis Cha. He is one of the best-selling Chinese authors with over 300 million copies of his works sold in the Chinese-speaking world. Despite their popularity, only few of Jin Yong’s martial arts novels have been translated into English. The Legends of the Condor Heroes, one of his most well-known works, covers the Song Dynasty and features hundreds of characters, telling a story full of gravity-defying kung fu, treachery, loyalty and love.

Holmwood, who has also translated works by other contemporary Chinese authors, said she became very involved in the details and admired Jin Yong’s brilliant writing. As a fan of Chinese classical poetry and literature, she recommended Jin Yong’s novels to a book agent in 2012. “It was mainly because of the quality of the writing and also because of his status in Chinese culture. The publisher in Britain was very excited to see there was such a big beloved author who still hadn’t been translated into English, at least not by a trade publisher,” she recalled.

“Of course it does make me nervous that the translation will be read against the original in a way that most translations don’t. So I have taken on the task with a humble heart,” she said.

The Times called the book she translated “hugely entertaining” and selected it as Book of the Month.

In the online world, it’s very difficult to talk to Chinese people without using emojis. However, did you know that people in different age groups have totally different preferences for choosing their emojis? The result is based on a report released by Tencent’s WeChat, China’s most popular messaging app, on its official weibo account on Wednesday.

Specifically, for users who were born in the 2000s, their favorite WeChat emoji would probably be the widely used “facepalm”, rumored to be based on the famous Hong Kong movie star Stephen Chow. They also may be a night owl without much sleep, while iced beverages and desserts are their cup of tea.

For China’s post-90s WeChat users, they are likely to get out of bed later in the morning compared with other groups, and the emoji “face with tears of joy” may rule their online social life. Also, their reading materials have shifted from entertainment and gossip three years ago to the current relationship and lifestyle pieces.

For those born in the 1980s, their tastes have remained the same, as they are still fond of reading news on national affairs. And “smiling widely” is their emoji of the year.

WeChat users born in the 1970s are called the optimistic group, who like to use the emoji “laughing quietly” and go through their moments frequently every day. Their bed time unusually takes place around 11:30 pm.

Users over 55 are the early-bird group with rich entertainment activities in WeChat platforms, such as looking through moments, reading and shopping. They like to cheer up other age groups, so their favorite emoji is “giving a thumbs-up”.

The report also indicates that WeChat boasts more than 1.08 billion active users with 45 billion messages being sent and 410 million calls getting through the app each day in 2018. In addition to covering users’ socializing, WeChat has gradually come into our daily lives. Compared to the year before, people used WeChat 4.7 times more to purchase public transport tickets, and 2.9 times more to pay for medical expenses. Also, the app was used 1.5 times more over the previous year to pay for meals, with Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen ranked as the top three cities in dining purchases through WeChat.

28. Which of the following emojis do users born in the 1980s prefer to use according to the passage?

A. B.

C.

D.

29.What can we know about the WeChat users born in the 1970s?

Living abroad has a great impact on everyone. It makes most people more flexible, open-minded and relaxed. More often than not people adapt so well to their new surroundings that they pick up habits from their host country.

People quickly start casually incorporating foreign words into their vocabulary. I know plenty of foreigners who would use the Chinese words for so-so (Mamahuhu), or annoying (Mafan) casually while speaking their mother tongue or English. Most people wouldn’t even notice that they added some Chinese words into their word pool until they go home and get constantly questioned about it. Another popular habit from China is to start using chopsticks. Then there are the more unusual habits. One of my German friends stopped asking people about their age, but rather asks

about their zodiac sign.

While I am in Beijing, I seldom really realize that I also have picked up some Chinese habits. But every time I go back home, I notice them. For instance, I am not used to tipping anymore. Since it is not common to give a tip in a bar or restaurant in China, I have completely let go of that habit. In Germany, this earns me a lot of angry stares since you would usually tip around three to 10 yuan there. But since I am not used to this German habit anymore, I require the waiters to give me back even the smallest amount of change. Additionally, in China I stopped carrying cash with me since using mobile payments is just too convenient. Sadly, my home country is still a very cash-based society, with hardly any mobile payment methods available and even using your debit card (借记卡) can be a challenge at times. So, whenever I am in a café, restaurant or bar with friends, I will have to borrow cash from them because I always forget to bring my wallet with me.

Another thing I very much got used to in China, is that most restaurants have no problem if you bring outside food or drinks as long as you still order something. In Europe, this is a total no-go. At first, I felt very guilty when I brought outside drinks into a restaurant in Beijing, but now it seems I got too used to it. Already more than once I was scolded for bringing my own drink into a restaurant in Germany and one time the waiter even made me leave. Furthermore, in China, I highly appreciate that getting tap water for free is the standard. On my last trip through Europe, I asked on multiple occasions for tap water and always received the same answer, “No free tap water. Y ou have to pay for water.”

32.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.People in China have a habit of asking about others’ zodiac sign.

B.People are not used to tipping in Germany when dining out.

C.People prefer to use debit card when shopping in Germany.

D.People can bring drinks into restaurants if they tip in Beijing.

33.The underlined phrase “word pool” is closest in meaning to _____.

A.memory

B. vocabulary

C. habits

D. custom

34.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Waiters tend to get angry when the author doesn’t tip in his home country.

B.Living abroad may make people relaxed and pick up some new habits.

C.In Germany people still like to bring cash with them when shopping.

D.The author began to use mobile payment when going back home.

35.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Learning to live like a Chinese

B. Cultural diversity

C. Adapting to Chinese habits

D. Cultural difference

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。

A great number of people can get injured or even killed resulting from a human stampede (踩踏). 36 What’s worse is that the stampede can be caused while there seems no actual danger. If you are in a crowd, the most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice the exits. 37 Make yourself aware of the type of ground you are standing on. If you are in a crowd of moving people, wet or uneven ground can be slippery

or dangerous, causing you to fall.

Get to know the general atmosphere of the event, as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference. If you find yourself in the middle

of a moving crowd, do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down. 38 Take advantage of any space that may open up and try to move sideways to the crowd movement where the flow is weaker.

Keep your hands up by your chest, like a boxer — 39

If you fall, get up quickly. If you fall and cannot get up, keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd, or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl (蜷缩)up. Do not lie on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs.

40

A. It gives you movement and protects your chest.

B. Instead, move in the same direction of the crowd.

C. Sometimes, finding a right posture can save your life.

D. If you are stepped on, you should shout for help.

E. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out.

F. The bad thing is that a peaceful group of people can quickly turn into a crazy panicked

crowd.

G. Stretch your arms to the full length so that you can make more space to move in the crowd.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)

Dear Peter,

How is everything going with you? I am really delighted to learn that you are planning a

trip to China in May. Welcome to China. Here I would like to tell you something about travelling

in China.

When in China, you can choose to travel by taking high speed railway or by plane, which allows

quick and easy access to most of the big cities in China. More amazingly, unlike previous years

when you had to get into some tourist attractions with the ID card, now you can do it through

a face recognition app, which will save you much time spent waiting in a queue. Besides, you

can use mobile payment instead of paying in cash when shopping. Thus don’t bother to take a

lot of cash with you. Anyway, with artificial intelligence, travelling in China will be an unforgettable experience that you can’t miss.

Hopefully, I will have a three-day holiday for May Day when you come here, so I can show

you around. Looking forward to your coming.

2019年浙江省十校联盟高三10月联考 英语试题 注意事项: 1.答题前填写好自己的姓名、班级、考号等信息; 2.请将答案正确填写在答题卡上。 第I卷(选择题) 一、阅读理解 One evening last summer, 11-year-old Owen and his mom put on white suits and taped their rain boots to their pant legs. Then they each grabbed a wooden pole with a large white cloth attached to it and started dragging the tools through the trees and grass in their Wisconsin backyard. They were looking for ticks(扁虱虫). Owen’s mom, Amy Prunuske, teaches microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wausau. She studies diseases that ticks carry. Owen, though, is known as a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people—young or old—who help collect data for research projects. They usually aren’t professional scientists, or if they are, not in the field of the project. Still, their work can be incredibly important. Citizen scientists can help trained scientists gather data from all over the world—even from space. They can provide new ideas and new ways of thinking. Kids often make great citizen scientists because they tend to be curious and good at following precise directions. Sometimes they’re even better at these things than adults. And schools are convenient places for scientists to recruit big groups of helpers. As a bonus, citizen science often gets kids more excited about science. Citizen science takes advantage not just of many sets of eyeballs, but also of many minds. When professional European scientists in Austria were trying to find how best to encourage people to use less energy, they partnered with student citizen scientists. The adult scientists had a long list of questions for people about how much energy they used. Right away, the students noticed some problems the adults hadn’t thought of. There were too many questions, the kids said. And some of those questions were too complicated.
