Part ⅡReading Comprehension (40points)

Directions: There are 4reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding

letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

It was Christmas Eve 1959, and the beginning of another routine flight. The hostesses started preparing the food trays. A few of the passengers were trying to get some sleep. But most of them were reading. There was nothing to see from the windows except the vast blackness of the Australian desert below. There was nothing unusual about the flight. Except perhaps that the plane was nearly full.

A lot of passengers were traveling home to spend Christmas with their families. The hostesses started serving dinner.

It was a smooth and quiet flight. The hostesses had finished collecting the trays, and they were putting things away when the first bell sounded. One of the hostesses went to check. When she came back she looked surprised. “It’s amazing,” she said, “Even on a smooth flight like this two people have been sick.”

Twenty minutes later nearly half the passengers were dramatically ill. Several were shivering, some were doubled up in pain, and two were unconscious. Fortunately there was a doctor on board, and he was helping the hostesses. He said, “I’d better speak to the captain. This is a severe case of food poisoning. I think we’d better land as soon as possible. ”“What caused it ?” asked one of the hostesses.

“Well,” replied the doctor, “I had the beef for dinner, and I’m fine. The passengers who chose the fish are ill.” The hostess led him to the flight deck. She tried to open the door. “I think it’s jammed,” she said. The doctor helped her to push it open. The captain was lying behind the door. He was unconscious. The co-pilot was dropped across the controls, and the radio operator was trying to revive him.

16. Where did the incident happen?

20. What caused the incident?

A.The passengers ate beef.

B.The passengers ate the fish.

C.There were too many passengers on the plane.

D.There was a lack of oxygen in the plane.

Passage Two

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

The market is a concept if you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale, you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the manager or the local supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.

If you take care of a sick person to earn money, you are producing for the market. If your father is a steel worker or a truck driver or a doctor or a grocer, he is producing goods or service for the market.

When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, supermarkets, gas stations, and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. When the local grocer hires you to drive the delivery truck, he is

buying your labor in the labor market.

The market may seem to be something abstract. But for each person or business who is making and selling something, it is very real. If nobody buys your tomatoes, it won’t be long before you get the message. The market is telling you something. It’s telling you that you are using energies and resources in doing something the market does not want you to do.

Passage Three

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

To understand how Americans think about things. It is necessary to understand “the point.” Americans mention it often: “Let’s get right to the point,” they will say, “My point is…”“What’s the point of all this? ”

The “point”is the idea or piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of people’s thinking, writings, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to “make their points clear,” meaning that they are supposed to say or write clearly the idea or piece of information they wish to express.

People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. African traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating “the point”clearly. Japanese traditionally speak indirectly, leaving the listener to figure out what the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend, “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit,” a Japanese might say, “Maybe this other coat would look even better than the one you have on.” Americans value a person who “gets right to the point.” Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude.

The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness (模糊) and ambiguity. The precision and directness Americans associate with “the point” cannot be achieved, at least not with any grace, in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.

26. According to the passage, Americans expect speakers and writers to ______.

A.be clear about their main ideas

B.give as much information as possible

C.express their personal views

D.be honest about their true feelings

27. Which of the following people will tell a story to express what they have in mind?

A. Americans

D. Chinese

28. In the sentence “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit”, the word “outfit” most probably means _

A. office

B. time

C. speech

D. clothes

29. According to the passage, Japanese may consider it unacceptable to be ______.

A. indirect

B. straightforward

C. poorly-dressed

D. curious

30. In order to communicate with Americans satisfactorily, speakers of Chinese need to ______.

A.learn the language well

change their way of thinking

B.be careful about their choice of words

C.explain their reasons clearly

Passage Four

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

A material is generally used because it offers the required strength, and other properties, at minimum cost. Appearance is also an important factor. The main advantage of metals is their strength and toughness. Concrete may be cheaper and is often used in building, but even concrete depends on its core of steel for strength.

Plastics are lighter and more corrosion-resistant(抗腐蚀的),but they are not usually as strong. Another problem with plastics is what to do with them after use. Metal objects can often be broken down and the metals recycled; plastics can only be dumped or burned.

Not all metals are strong, however. Copper and aluminum, for example, are both fairly weak—but if they are mixed together, the result is an alloy(合金), which is much stronger than either pure copper or pure aluminum. Alloying is an important method of obtaining whatever

special properties( 性能)are required: strength, toughness, resistance to wear, high electrical resistance or corrosion-resistance.

The properties of a metal can be further improved by use of heat treatment. Heat treatment is the term given to a number of different procedures in which the properties of metals and alloys are changed. It usually consists of heating the metal or alloy to a selected temperature below its melting point and then cooling it at a certain rate to obtain those required properties. For example, hardening is used to make metals harder. Tempering makes them softer and less brittle(硬而易碎的). Annealing is conducted to make a metal soft so that it can be machined more easily. In this way, metallic materials can be produced to meet every kind of engineering requirement.

31. When choosing a material, people may consider all the following except the material’s ______.

A. Strength

B. Appearance

C. recyclability

D. cost

32. Which of following statements is true?

A.Concrete must always be used together with steel in building.

B.Aluminum bronze is stronger than any pure metal.

C. A major advantage of plastics over metal is that they are cheaper than metal.

D.It’s sometimes an advantage for a metal to be soft.

33. Alloying is useful in that______.

A.It turns a weak metal into a strong one

B.It makes such useless metals as copper and aluminum useful

C.It produces new materials that can meet special requirements

D.All of the above

34. Which of the following methods can be used to obtain a more corrosion-resistant material?

A. Alloying.

B. Hardening.

C. Tempering.

D. Annealing.

35. Generally, what is heat treatment used for?

A.To improve the quality of a metal or alloy.

B.To obtain a special property of a metal or alloy.

C.To melt a metal or alloy to make it easier to use.

D.To make a metal or alloy stronger.

学位英语考试练习题(四)

学位英语考试练习题(四) Part I Reading Comprehension A teddy bear is delivered to No. 10 Downing Street after the birth of Prime Minister Tony Blair and wife Cherie’s fourth child. Britain’s baby alert is over-Cherie Blair gave birth to a boy. Mrs. Blair, 45, wife of Prime Minister Tony Blair, had the baby this morning. The baby will be named Leo after the prime minister’s father, his office announced, the baby weighed in at 6 pounds, 12 ounces. Mother, father and the baby boy returned to 10 Downing Street-the prime minister’s official residence-after the birth, a spokesman said. The baby is the couples’ fourth child. “Cherie and the baby are absolutely fine,” Blair said today outside his Downing Street residence. “He is a gorgeous little boy. They are resting right now.” Blair, dressed casually in an open shirt, appeared emotional about the birth, the first of his four children whose birth he has been at from beginning to end. “this is the first time I’ve seen the whole thing though,” he said. “it was quite a struggl e, really, for Cherie.” The switchboard was reportedly lit up with calls from world leaders wishing them well, including a call from Hillary Colliery Clinton. Former prime minister John Major was the first public figure to get through on the phone at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The baby came after a 12-year gap from the Blairs other three children-Euan, 16, Nicky, 14, and Kathryn. He is the first to be born to a serving Buitish prime minister in over 150 years. News of the pregnancy took Cherie and the rest of the nation by surprise when it was announced last year. After decades of much older occupants at No.10 Downing Street, the Blairs’ arrival at the prime minister’s residence with their children and assorted toys in tow was hailed as a breath of fresh air.
