I think there are four main reasons for the widespread use of English.

First of all, the number of the population using English is huge. Secondly, the widespread of english is due to some historical reasons. We all know that english is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially those former British colonies. Thirdly, compared to other languages like Chinese or French, English is much easier to learn and master.
