Part I Reading comprehension (40 points)

Directions:In this section there are four passages. Each passage is followed

by five questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are four

choices. Choose the best answer.

Passage 1

Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the

student. If a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be

familiar with information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class

or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to pass

exams). The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn

for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades.

Grade-conscious students may be frustrated with teachers who do not believe

it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned

with brief written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given,

the student is responsible for learning the material assigned.

When research is assigned, the professor expects the student to take the

initiative and to complete the assignment with minimal guidance. It is the

student's responsibility to find books, periodicals, and articles in the library.

Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works.

They expect students, particularly graduate students, to be able to exhaust the

reference sources in the library.

Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not

be overly dependent on them. (This differs from teacher-student relationships

in other countries. ) In the United States, professors have other duties besides

teaching. Often they are responsible for administrative work within their

departments. In addition, they may be obliged to publish articles and books.

Therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is

limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should

either approach a professor during office hours or make an appointment.

1. In the first paragraph "Courses are not designed merely for students to pass

exams." means" ____."

A) teachers want students to fail exams

B) teachers care only about exam grades

C) teachers believe that passing exams is not the only purpose of a course

D) teachers design courses for lectures only

2. Professors in the United States usually expect __________.

A) the students to know all the answers

B) the students never to seek their advice

C) the students to take the initiative and be independent

D) the students to work together

3. The main idea of this passage is that ____________.

A) students should learn independently

B) students should learn under close guidance of their professors

C) students should learn cooperatively

D) students should not learn mainly for high grades

4. If a student has a problem with classroom work, he or she should _____.

A) make an appointment with the professor a week before

B) approach a professor after class

C) seek the professor's help in his office

D) go to the professor's apartment

5. Who is considered to be a good student?

A) One who aims at getting good scores.

B) One who is planning to get a degree.

C) One who is capable of memorizing knowledge.

D) One who has the motivation to learn.

Passage 2

Women in the United States and in many other countries participate in

a growing number of sports and games. This has not always been the case,

however. In fact, women have not been as active in sports as men. Only in

recent years have women begun to catch up to men in this area. Until the

twentieth century, women did not often participate in sports.

Part of the explanation for this is that women simply did not have time.

Many women cooked, cleaned, and took care of children. They were so

busy that they did not have time for sports. A second reason, especially in the

late nineteenth century, is that a woman's image at that time was one of frailty,

线

试密学

三illness, and delicacy. In the Victorian era, people thought that it was

unladylike for a woman to be involved in any sports activity.

There have been changes in both the view of women in the modern world,

and also changes within the world of sports. These changes have

allowed many more women to participate in sports. The general view of

women has changed substantially since the Victorian era. Women are no

longer considered delicate. People do not think it is unladylike for a

woman to compete in sports. Women who win in sports activities are

highly regarded. Many women now take part in sports and games of many

different kinds, and enjoy doing so. This development is partly the result of a

change in the image of women in the modern world.

Women also are more active in sports now because of two changes in

sports. First, in the early twentieth century, women began to compete regularly

in the Olympics. Also, the number of events for women in the

Olympics has been growing quite steadily. The fact that women can

compete in the Olympics encourages many to become active in the various

Olympic activities. In more recent years, television has had a

noticeable effect on both the popularity of and participation in women's

professional sports. Seeing women in professional sports on TV has made

certain sports much more popular among women, as amateurs and as

professionals.

6. Before the twentieth century women ______.

A) took an active part in sports B) were as active in sports as men

C) seldom participated in sports D) did not take part in any sports at all

7. Which of the following is not considered as the image of women in the

Victorian era?

A) weakness B) illness C) delicacy D) strength

8. What causes many more women to participate in sports now?

A) more free time

B) changes in the view of women and in the world of sports

C) television

D) both A and B

9. Women used to be centered on ______.

A) house work B) cooking

C) taking care of children D) cleaning

10. Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage?

A)Women and Sports

B)Sports in the Twentieth Century

C)Women in Olympic Games

D)Women's Past and Present

三Passage 4

One day Thomas Edison learned that the railroad company needed a boy

to sell newspapers, food, and candy on the train running between his town and

the city of Detroit, sixty-five miles away. The job would require that he be on

the train at seven o'clock every morning and not return home until nine-thirty

at night.

The trips to Detroit were full of excitement for Thomas, and each day he

learned new things. He had to wait many hours in Detroit before the train

returned to his town in the evening, and one day he discovered the Free Public

Library. He decided that he would read all the books on its shelves! That

would have been impossible, of course, especially since the library was

constantly adding new books. But he did learn many of the books particularly

those on science which had a great fascination for him.

The boy gave most of the money he earned to his mother but he kept

some of it to buy scientific equipment with which he could make experiments.

There was some vacant(空的) space in the baggage car of the train and the

conductor allowed him to set up a little laboratory there so that he could

perform experiments when he was not occupied in selling newspapers and

things for people to eat. He was very busy and very happy.

One day, however, when he was fourteen, he got off the train to sell

newspapers when it stopped at a station. This was something he did every day,

but on that particular day there was some very exciting news and many people

wanted to buy his papers. Thomas was so eager to make all the money he

could that he didn't hear the conductor yell "All aboard!" The train started to

leave. The young newspaper boy ran to get on it, but by then the train was

moving so fast he could not jump on, as he had often done before. He grabbed

the handrail of the last car, but his hands were stiff with the cold and he could

not pull himself up onto the train. One of the men on the train tried to help but

his grip on the boy slipped, so he grabbed him by the ears and succeeded in

pulling him to safety. Thomas felt something snap in his ears and from that

time on he began to grow deaf.

To lose one's hearing would seem like a great adversity to most people,

but Edison did not let it interfere with the program or scientific study which he

laid out for himself. Many years later he said that losing his hearing might

have been good luck for him, rather than bad luck, because he was not

distracted by noises and sounds that might have interfered with his study and

inventions.

16. It was arranged that Thomas was ______.

So long as I diligently pursue, I believe that I will succeed!
