The Internet has led to a huge increase in credit-card (信用卡)fraud. Your card information could even be for sale in an illegal web site.

Web sites offering cheap goods and services should be regarded with care.

On-line shoppers who enter their credit-card information may never receive the goods they thought they bought. Computers hackers(黑客) have broken down security(安全) systems, raising questions about the safety of cardholder information. And shop only at secure sites; send your credit-card information only if the Web site offers advanced secure system.

If the security is in place, a letter will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. The Website address may also start https://--the extra “s” stands for secure. If in doubt, give your credit-card information over the telephone.

My father was a foreman of a sugar-cane plantation in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first job was to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields. I would walk behind an ox, guiding him with a broomstick. For $1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks.

It was very tedious work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being respectful and faithful to the people you work for. More important, I earned my pay; it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work.

I was only six years old, but I was doing a man’s job. Our family needed every dollar we could make because my father never earned more than $18 a week. Our home was a

three-room wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-esteem(自尊心), one of the most important things a person can have.

When I was seven, I got work at a golf course near our house. My job was to stand down the fairway and spot the balls as they landed, so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dreamt of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle.

The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of guava limb(番石榴树枝) and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with the same devotion and intensity. I learned working in the field—except now I was driving golf balls with club, not oxen with a broomstick.

61. The writer’s first job was __________.

A. to stand down the fairway at a golf course

B. to watch over the sugar-cane plantation

C .to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields

D .to spot the balls as they landed so the golfers could find them

62. The word “tedious” in paragraph2 most probably means______________.

A difficult B. boring C. interesting D. unusual

63. The writer learned that __________ from his first job.

A. he should work for those who he liked most

B. he should work longer than what he was expected

C. he should never fail to say hello to his owner

D. he should be respectful and faithful to the people he worked for

64. ____________ gave the writer self-esteem.

A. Having a family of eight people

B. Owning his own golf course

C. Bringing money back home to help the family

D. Helping his father with the work on the plantation

65. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. He wanted to be a successful golfer.

B. He waned to run a golf course near his house.

C. He was satisfied with the job he got on a plantation

D. He wanted to make money by guiding oxen with a broomstick

C

Believed it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.

Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons, painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.

Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.

Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards(danger) are the greatest curves , exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.

Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drives become used to seeing the painted bars.

Chevrons ,scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

66. The passage mainly discusses___________.

A. a new way of highway speed control

B. a new pattern for painting highways

C. a new way of training drivers

D. a new type of optical illusion

67. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that__________.

A. they should avoid speed-related hazards

B. they are driving in the wrong lane

C. they should slow down their speed

D. they are coming near to the speed limit

68. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former________.

A. can keep drivers awake

B. can cut road accidents in half

C. will look more attractive

D. will have a longer effect on drivers

69. The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to ________.

A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas

B. change the road signs across the country

C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons

D. repeat the Japanese road patterns

70. What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?

A. They are suitable only on broad roads.

B. They are falling out of use in the United States.

C. They are ignored in a long period of time.

D. They cannot be used successfully to traffic circles

PART FOUR WRITING (45 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Many universities are providing more financial aid for their students.

Harvard already offers a free education to students from families that earn up to sixty thousand dollars a year. This has helped increase the numbers of lower-income and minority students.

Now the aim is to help all but the wealthiest American families pay for a Harvard education. What Harvard has done is change the way it offers financial aid. College students will not be expected to take out loans.(贷款). Increase in grant aid(助学金) will replace loans. Also, Harvard officials will no longer consider the value of a family’s home when deciding how much aid to give.

Harvard says it expects to spend up to twenty-two million dollars more a year in financial aid. This will come from its own fund. School invest their money to earn more. Harvard’s fund is valued at thirty-five billion dollars. Harvard university’s expanding

financial aid is putting pressure on other universities to do the same.

Other universities with large funds are also changing their financial aid policies. Examples include Yale, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania.

Yale’s fund is the second largest after Harvard, at twenty-two and a half billion dollars. This week, Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, announced that it will use more of that money for financial aid as well as scientific research, which will attract more students.

Some colleges, however, say they simply do not have enough money to compete with the new policies that are being announced.

Critics of the rising costs of a college education say universities are making these changes in an attempt to avoid action by Congress. Some lawmakers have criticized universities for raising their prices even as their funds grow larger and larger.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

Not long ago, people thought babies were notable to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.

Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.

One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.

The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.

Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression.

The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.

These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

作文。

Good morning, everyone,

My topic today is how to live a low-carbon life. As we all know, the earth is becoming warmer and warmer due to the global climate change. Many people may think that low-carbon life is far away from us. However, every one of us can reduce our daily carbon emissions by doing something.

Firstly, changing our previous living habit of wasting things is the first step. We can use energy-saving electricity lights instead of the traditional lights, and turn them off when we don’t use them. Never leave the water running when we don’t use it. When we need to contact someone , it’s better to send an e-mail than use paper to write letters.

Use the public transport or ride your bicycle instead of driving private cars when we travel somewhere. Even if we have to drive ,we’d better plan it well in advance to avoid wasting fuel.

It is believed that the global climate change is due to the human activities. Only if we know what we do in our daily life and live a low-carbon life can we make a difference.
