In this fiercely competitive society where time and money are everything, people crave for instant riches and overnight success. But does money always bring happiness and what constitutes success? I won’t deny the important of money. We need it to keep ourselves fed, clad and doctored. In this sense, the more money we have, the better. But once money helps us meet our basic physical needs and we feel safe and secure, we are, according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, at the middle of that pyramid where belongingness and love, etc are what we seek for. Going further up this pyramid, we have esteem needs including achievement ,responsibility until up at the top of it we want to have personal growth and fulfill our life purpose, in other words we want to define our calling, identify our worth and value and then actualize them.It is apparent that money cant bring all these things. This explains why in an age of relative material affluence, people still feel unhappy and some people even find themselves in a constant state of depression. So what us people of the younger generation need to focus right now is to find our passion, discover what we are truly interested in, choose the path that is the most suitable for us and then persist in going down that path. It is anemic and unconvincing to only preach about the harm of spiritual barrenness, the need of self-improvement and how a profound, well-developed mind can help us live a more fulfilling and fruitful life cause without the bare sustenance to sustain our life, everything else is a castle up in the air. But you shall also discover that, somewhere along your life, you need love of your parents, care of your friends, and an abundance of them.You need a sense of purpose to sustain your hope and faith in life. You need a lot of non-material things to live on through this magnificent but more often harsh and bitter life. So success is more of a personal feeling than public recognition. If you think you have made the most out of your life and despite your stumbling youth and struggling middle-life, you pull through all kinds of tests you’ve been put to. Then you can call your successful. Glamorous clothes, fancy cars, palatial mansions don’t necessarily make for a successful life.
