Unit 3 Robots

Task

I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. complete a complaint letter according to the questionnaire;

2. write a letter to complain about your robot or a reply to a complaint letter.

II. Teaching contents

1. New words and phrases: satisfied, completely, regret, product, quality, be satisfied with, first of all, at most, last

for at least two months, up to standard, get my money back]

2. New structures: How long do you expect your r obot’s batteries to last?

How often do you think your robot should be checked?

I am not satisfied with it at all.

A good robot should only need checking every six months.

To write a letter to complain about your robot or a reply to a complaint letter.

IV. Teaching procedures

Step 1 Lead-in

1. Revision

T: Robots can do a lot of things for us. What good things could Mr Jiang’s robot do for him?

S: It could make breakfast for him in the morning, iron his business suit, prepare his lunch box, do all the housework when he was at work, go shopping at the supermarket, prepare a delicious dinner for him and tidy up after dinner.

2. Your ideal robot

T: If you have a robot, what do you look for in it? Here is a questionnaire for you. Discuss with your partners and complete it.

Step 2 Presentation—Daniel’s complaint letter

1. Learn about Daniel’s ideal ro bot

T: Read Daniel’s answers carefully. What’s his ideal robot like?

S: Daniel’s robot’s batteries should last 2 months.

His robot should work 24 hours a day.

Daniel wants his robot to help him with his homework.

He thinks his robot should be checked every 6 months.

2. Complete the complaint letter

T: Daniel’s robot has stopped working recently. He decided to write a complaint letter to the shop. Let’s help Daniel complete the letter according to the questionnaire above.

3. Learn about the complaint letter

Task 1: Fill in the form

T: The Customer Service Department of the robot shop has received Daniel’s letter. They need to fill in a form before sending the letter to the manager. Can you help them fill in the form?

Task 2: Careful reading

T: T he manager is reading Daniel’s letter carefully and trying to find out what’s wrong with Daniel’s robot.

Let’s give him a hand.

S: He regrets having bought the robot and would like to get his money back.

Task 3: How to write a complaint letter

T: Work in groups and underline some useful expressions in Daniel’s letter first.

What information should be included in a complaint letter? Suppose you are also unhappy with your robot.

Have a discussion with your group members.

Firstly, you can tell the Customer Service Department what you are unhappy with, when you bought it and what you think of it.

Secondly, you can tell the differences between your ideal robot and the real robot carefully. It’s important to make them know why you are unhappy with the robot.

Finally, you can tell them how you plan to deal with it.

Step 3 Presentation—The reply from the robot shop

1. Read the reply

T: After the robot shop received Daniel’s letter, the manager sent a reply to Daniel. Read the letter with Daniel together. How many ways does the manager offer to solve Daniel’s problems?

S: Two. Daniel can accept a new robot or get his money back.

2. Help Daniel make a decision

T: What should Daniel do with the robot? Can you give him some suggestions? Work in groups and tell me your decision and reasons. You can give as many reasons as possible.

3. How to write a reply

T: Underline some useful expressions in the reply.

T: Here is some advice for you. When we receive a complaint letter, we should send a reply immediately.

What’s more, we should pay attention to our words when we are explaining something. Most of all, we should find out ways to deal with the problems.

Step 4 Writing

T: Today we’ve learned how to write a complaint letter and the re ply. Susan bought a mobile phone last week. However, there is something wrong with it. She is planning to write a complaint letter to the shop. Can you help her write the letter?

Susan上周买了一台手机,型号NKZ03,但在使用中碰到了一些问题,她发现这台手机与店家所作的承诺不相符。请你以Susan的名义给店家写一封投诉信。要点包括:

1. 电池最多只能用一天;Susan认为应该至少能用两天。
