The terrible college entrance exam is not only a big challenge for Chinese high school students, but also a very important exam in the lives of South Korean students.

Although the long, cold winter has already started in South Korea, the annual (一年一度的) national exams have made the atmosphere very heated.

More than 675,000 South Korean high school graduates(毕业生)took the college entrance exam last Wednesday. They usually take exams in Korean, maths, sociology (社会学), history and foreign languages.

Officially there is one college place for every 1.33 students. But because all the students want to go to the top universities in the country, the competition can reach one place for 10 students. The students want to attend these colleges for both their famous names and better job opportunities.

Because students face fierce competition, they have to study very hard to realize their dreams. Park Seung said he and his classmates often go to school before 7:30 am. After school has finished at 6:30 pm, most of them go to the library to continue their study instead of returning home. Since many libraries in South Korea are open 24 hours a day, they often stay long into the night. Many of the Senior 3 students only sleep for three to

four hours a day.

“I feel a lot of pressure, but I have to study very hard in order to make my dream come true. This is my lifetime goal and it will be a turning point in my life which could decide my future,” Park said.

The exam day is a very serious day for the whole of South Korea. Vehicles are not allowed within a 200-metre radius (范围) of all the test sites to make sure the students have quiet surroundings. Tooting (吹奏) of horns is forbidden, even airplanes are ordered to avoid landing and take-off near the test sites during listening comprehension test hours. Students are told their scores in December before they apply for college. This is followed by face-to-face oral tests(口试). There are public and private universities in South Korea. Many private universities are well-known, but their fees can be 18, 000 yuan each term. This has made a lot of students think again.

59. In South Korean ________.

A. there is only one college

B. there is only one top college

C. there are only top universities

D. there are a number of colleges

60. We can infer that there are almost ________ college places for high school graduates.

A. 675, 000

B. 507, 520

C. 500, 000

D. 600, 000

61. Airplanes are not permitted to land near the test sites ________.

A. when the test begins

B. when the test is going on

C. during some period of the test

D. during the tests

62. Before students are allowed to colleges ________.

A. they will be interviewed

B. they will ask questions of colleges

C. they will not be tested any more

D. first they will pay all the education fee at all

C

You are seeing a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!

Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen(特技演员).That is to say, they perform tricks.

They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall onto hard ground but onto empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar!

But although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.

Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They sometimes get seriously injured, and even killed. A Norwegian(挪威的)stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute (降落伞) failed to open and he was killed.

In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women to perform some dangerous actions. For nowadays there are stunt girls, too.

63. What can be inferred from the author’s example of the Norwegian stuntman?

A. Sometimes an accident can happen to a stuntman.

B. Parachutes must be of good quality.

C. The percentage of serious accidents is high.

D. The cliff was too high.

64. Stuntmen are those who ________.

A. often dress up as actors

B. like to lead dangerous lives

C. often perform seemingly dangerous actions

D. often fight each other for their lives

65. Stuntmen earn their living by ________.

A. playing their dirty tricks

B. selling their special(特别的)skills

C. jumping out of high windows

D. jumping from fast moving trains

66. When a stuntman falls from a high building, ________.

A. he needs little protection

B. he will be covered with a mattress

C. his life is in danger

D. his safety is generally all right

67. Which of the following is the main factor of a successful performance?

A. Strength.

B. Exactness.

C. Speed.

D. Carefulness.

D.

"Penn Station," I told the cab driver and got in.The young, heavy-set man looked friendly and we naturally started a conversation, which went from the weather and quickly varied into the struggles of a cab driver's life.

"What do you do besides your job?" he asked curiously."I help a nonprofit organization trying to bring some goodness in the world," I responded."Do they pay you well?" "Well, no, but I get by.I don't have many material things in life, but I've realized that I don't need all that to keep me happy. If I die tomorrow, I want to go out knowing

that I've made a few people smile."

The young cab driver, perhaps in his late thirties, looked back through the sliding glass as if extending his hand for a hand shake---"Man, it is nice to meet you." Although we were strangers, both of us felt deeply conn-ected as human beings. And by now, 7 minutes into our ride, we were on a first-name basis. He even spelled his name for me: H-a-k-e-e-m.

Hakeem and I talked a bit about simple acts of generosity, the power of a pay-it-forward mindset and how that can promote trust and connection in our communities. He understood the idea, but it seemed very abstract and foreign to him.We arrived at Penn Station and traded e-mail addresses after I paid my ride fare.As I was heading out, I turned to him and said, "Hakeem, here's a $20.Whenever you feel like it, you give a ride to people and tell them that someone before them has paid for their fare.See what happens."

Hearing this, Hakeem was visibly moved."Really? Are you sure?"

68.The phrase "get by" in Paragraph Two probably means “____.”

A.receive some profits by helping the organization

B.receive no profit by helping the organization

C.gain some fame by helping the organization

D.gain some happiness by helping the organization

69.From the description that Hakeem looked back through the sliding glass the author expects to indicate that _______.

A.Hakeem was inspired by his words

B.Hakeem didn't believe what he had said

C.Hakeem was carefully driving while talking with the author

D.Hakeem felt a little tired and wanted to shake his hand

70.Hakeem understood the idea of a pay-it-forward act_________.

A.as soon as the author had told him about it

B.after the author set an example to him

C.after he made some further explanations

D.after he saw a scene of it acted out

71.We can learn from the passage that the author's goal of an act of kindness was____ A.to help people in trouble B.to strengthen friendship among friends

C.to make people happy D.to contribute to people's trust and connection.

An early invention by Albert Einstein has been rebuilt by scientists at Oxford University. They are trying to develop an environmentally friendly refrigerator that runs without elec-tricity.

We all know that modern fridges cause damage to the environment. They work by using a kind of man-made greenhouse gas called Freon(氟里昂), which is far more dam-aging than carbon dioxide.

Now Malcolm McCulloch, an electrical engineer at Oxford, is leading a three-year project to develop appliances that can be used in places without electricity.

His team has completed a prototype (样机)of a fridge patented in 1930 by Einstein. It used only pressurized gases to keep things cold. The design was partly used in the first refrigerators, but the technology was dropped when more efficient compressors (压缩机)became popular in the 1950s.That meant a switch to using Freon.

Einstein's idea uses butane (丁烷)and water and takes advantage of the fact that liquids boils at lower temperatures, when the air pressure around them is lower."If you go to the top of Mount Qomolangma, water boils at a much lower temperat-ure than it does when you're at sea level and that's because the pressure is much lower up there," said McCulloch. At one side is the evaporator (蒸发器), a bottle that contains liquid butane."If you introduce a new vapor above the butane, the liquid boiling temper-ature decreases and, as it boils off, it takes energy from the surroundings to do so," says McCulloch."That's what makes it cold."

The gas fridges based on Einstein's design were replaced by Freon-compressor fridges partly because Einstein's design was not very efficient. But McCulloch thinks that by changing the design and replacing the types of gases used it will be possible to quadruple (翻两番)the efficiency.

However, McCulloch's fridge is still in its early stages."It's very much a prototype," he said."Give us another month and we'll have it working."

72.According to the passage,an early invention by Albert Einstein __

A.has been rediscovered because it costs much less and works more efficiently

B.is being redesigned because it could be used in places without electricity

C.has just been found to be energy-saving and environmentally friendly

D.will be fully made use of and become the fridge of the future

73.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A.Freon was used in fridges long before the 1950s.

B.Freon is what makes current fridges big polluters.

C.McCulloch thinks he could improve Einstein's design by using other types of vapors.

D.The fridge Malcolm McCulloch and his team designed will be put into production soon.

74.We can learn from the text that the prototype completed _______.

A.changed the air pressure around it

B.was tested on the top of Mount Everest

C.increased the liquid boiling temperature

D.used only pressurized gases to keep things cold

75.McCulloch's words in Paragraph 6 _____.

A.serve as an explanation for the principle behind Einstein's fridge

B.give you the reason why Einstein's fridge was not efficient

C.tell you how to take advantage of low air pressure

D.show you how Einstein's fridge works

第II卷(共两节,满分35分)

第一节任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Robot(机器人)revolution

The day that a robot wakes you up, cleans your room and walks your dog might still be a few decades off. But increasingly, engineers are saying that robots are going to make the leap(跳跃)from the factory floor to your family room.

Companies like Sony and General Electric are working on designs for small robots. Products like the Roomba, a robot that can clean floors, are flying off the shelves. On the cover of a recent issue of Scientific American magazine, Bill Gates predicted the “Dawn of the Ag e of Robots”.

What’s behind this new era (时代)? It’s partly a matter of technology. Devices that can recognize and respond(回应)to a human voice have been developed. There are now a few different ways for robots to move around. They can walk, crawl(爬行)or ride on wheels. They are being made smaller and smaller. They are also becoming more and more energy efficient.

A bigger part of the story is on the demand side. From the day Robert Adler invented the television remote control in the 1950s, people around the world have tirelessly searched for ways to get lazier.

Also take into consideration the increasing wealth of rich people, the time appears ripe to introduce robots to ease our daily lives.

To be sure, robots that walk on two legs and talk like people are still too complex for our present engineering abilities. Today’s robot revolution is to make them for everyday use. Robots will do basic housework such as cleaning or gardening, or just help you have more fun on the basketball court.

What makes a robot different from an ordinary cleaning machine is not the presence of computer chips (芯片). Nowadays even your microwave has a computer chip. It is the ability to sense and make changes to the environment(环境)in real time.

For example, a floor-cleaning robot should be able to sense your scared cat and move out of the way. Today’s computing ability is, for the first time, able to make machines that could “think”, at least in certain limited ways.

Our class held a discussion about whether music should be played during the break or not .The opinions are divided .

Most of the students think that music should be played .As we know, music can produce a lively and happy atmosphere .Besides , after hard study , music can bring us relaxation , which reduces the tiredness .This can help us make full preparations for the next class .Listening to music also makes us feel happy .

On the other hand , some students don’t think so .In their opinion , they can’t get the expected effect from playing music , for the class break time is too short .What is needed most during the class break is peace instead of noise produced by music .

In my opinion…..
