Outside her shabby cottage, old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They were determined to find out if she really was a witch(女巫).

They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick(扫帚柄)and take flight. Suddenly, the old lady’s work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen—a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on top of the haystack(干草堆). The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. With only three legs, it was hard for Sooty to keep up with the old lady. The cat provided proof—the children were sure that only a witch would own a black cat with three legs.

There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretching out to gather her precious egg. Taking the egg in one of her hands, she began to climb down when, without warning, the box broke and the old lady fell.

“We have to go and help her, ”whispered Amy.

“What if it is a trick?”r eplied Ben.

“Don’t be silly, Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs

already,”reasoned Meg. “Come on Amy, let’s go. ”The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack.

Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady’s face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken. “Go and get Dad,” Amy yelled to her brother. “Tell him about the accident.”

The boys did not need another excuse to leave. They ran as fast as they could for help, hoping that Mrs. Tailor would not wake and turn the girls into frogs.

What’s black and white and read all over? Not newspapers, at least not anymore. In fact, if you’re like most young people, you probably don’t read the news-paper at all. In one recent survey, just 19 percent of 18-to-34-

-year-olds said they read a newspaper every day, while 37 percent watch local TV news and 44 percent visit Internet news sites daily. As people turn more and more to new technologies, they turn the pages of news-papers less and less.

“There’s a revolution (革命) in the way young people get news,” says media consultant Merrill Brown.

Just a generation or two ago, the newspaper was the main way that many people got their news. Now, nearly every home has at least one TV set. There’s high-speed, wireless Internet both at home and in many public places.

You no longer have to wait for a bundle of newsprint to arrive on your doorstep every morning. Thanks to new technology, if you want to know what’s going on in the world, you can get breaking news immediately in more ways than one.

So newspapers face a very big challenge. Raised on MTV and video games, today’s

kids and young adults want flashy displays, special effects, quick information, and the chance to interact (互动) in real time, even when they’re reading about serious problems.

If newspapers can’t find creative ways to be more than just ink on paper, some experts suggest, they might disappear completely.

Traditional newspaper articles are supposed to be read from beginning to end, lack (缺乏) of interaction. With Web pages, on the o ther hand, there’s more freedom. You can look through the things you’re interested in, then follow links to other sources. You can join discussion groups, read other people’s opinions on a topic, or start a blog to express your own views.

A. the future of the Internet

B. different news sources

C. the disappearing newspaper

D. the new technologies

C. more than half of the 18-to-34-year-olds visit news sites daily

D. newspapers are no longer the major source of news

62. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the disadvantage of newspapers?

A. High price.

B. Lack of changes.

C. Slow speed.

D. Lack of interaction.

63. The author of the passage would probably think the future of newspapers is ______.

A. attractive

Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to change their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on misconceptions—mistaken ideas. One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures. It’s ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To avoid ethnocentrism, it’s necessary to study the different elements (组成部分) of culture:language, values and attitudes, and customs and manners.

Language

A knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways. First, people can communicate directly.Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks their language. Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better. Values and Attitudes

Values are people’s basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad. An attitude is a way of thinking or acting. Values and attitudes influence

international business. For example, many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and they buy a lot of it.

Customs and Manners

Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For example, in the United States, it is the custom to have salad (色拉) before the main course at dinner, not after. It’s not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company in France doesn’t sell well because the French don’t usually drink juice with breakfast.

64.A knowledge of the local language allows international business people________.

A. to be more open with their customers

B. to communicate without outside help

C. to express their thoughts indirectly

D. to have a better idea of their own culture

65.The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role of________.

A. manners

B. Values

C. attitudes

D. customs

66.What would be the best title for the text?

A. Misconceptions in Business

B. Basic Beliefs in Business

C. International Business Culture

D. Successful International Business

67.The author’s purpose of writing this article is to tell people________.

A. how to take a right attitude in business

B. how to avoid misunderstandings in business

C. how to use a local language in business

D. how to act politely and properly in business

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (AP)--Bill Gates is finally getting his Harvard degree--32 years after he walked away from the university on the path to becoming the world's wealthiest person.

Gates, billionaire co--founder of Microsoft Corp.philanthropist(慈善家) and college dropout, will receive an honorary degree June 7 when he delivers Harvard University' s 356th graduation address(演说).

"His contributions to the world of business and technology, and the great example he has set through his far--reaching philanthropy, will rightfully put him on center stage in Harvard Yard," Harvard Alumni Association President Paul Finnegan said in a statement.

Gates is considered a member of Harvard' s Class of 1977, which celebrates its 30th reunion this year. He first came to the university in 1973 but left in1975 to devote his time to developing Microsoft, which he founded that year with childhood friend Paul

Allen.

Gates helped turn Redmond, Wash--based Microsoft into the world's largest maker of computer software, with revenues of more than $ 44 billion during the year 2018. He was the company's chief executive(首席执行官)until 2000 and still serves as chairman.

Gates and his wife, Melinda, created the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000,which is now the world's largest philanthropic foundation with an endowment(捐赠资金) of about $ 33 billion. The foundation concentrates on promoting global health, ending poverty and hunger, and enhancing education. The Gates Foundation also is a major donor to Harvard.

Jack Reardon, Harvard's associate vice president for university relations, said there was no particular reason why the university waited until this year to honor Gates. He said Harvard considers many people for honorary degrees every year.

Forbes magazine earlier this year estimated Gates' worth at $ 56 billion, making him the world's richest person.

68. Which of the following is probably the best title of this passage?

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.

Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成)as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival.Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.

Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for.Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential (潜在的)resources to be found.Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later.Resources may be more than physical possessions.Knowledge or techniques

have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems.Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副产品)of technological

developments in the space industry!

While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us.While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive.Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.

While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.

71.Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph1 ?

A.To express his doubts.B.To introduce points for discussion.C.To compare different ideas.D.To describe the conditions on Earth.72.What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph2?

A.Humans don't like to stay in the same place.B.Humans have the tendency to fight.

C.Humans may find new sources of food.D.Humans are nature-born to do so.73.The underlined word "spin-offs" in Paragraph 4 probably refers to______.A.survival chances B.potential resources

C.unexpected benefits D.physical possessions

74.What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?

A.The adaptive ability of humans B.Resources on the earth.C.Our genetic makeup.D.By-products in space exploration.75.Which of the statements can best sum un the passage?

A.Space exploration has created many wonders.

B.Space exploration provided the best value for money.

C.Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.

D.Space exploration can benefit science and technology.

Events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, and tornadoes are all natural disasters. They are mostly related to the weather. Some are predictable ----like a hurricane. Some, like an earthquake, surprise us. It is necessary for us to learn about them, so we can be prepared!

Flooding happens during heavy rains, when rivers overflow, when ocean waves come onshore, when snow melts too fast or when dams or banks break. Flooding is the most common of all natural disasters.

Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the Pacific Ocean. Hurricanes gather heat and energy through contact with warm ocean waters. Evaporation from the seawater increases their power.

Hurricanes have winds at least 74 miles per hour. When they come onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and heavy waves can damage buildings, trees and cars. Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storm s. Tornadoes must always be taken seriously. Tornadoes can be very dangerous ---- sometimes even deadly. They come from powerful thunderstorms and appear as moving. Tornado winds can reach 300 miles per hour. They cause damage when they land the ground. They can damage an area one mile wide and 50 miles long.

While thunder won't hurt you ----lightning will! So it's important to pay attention when you hear thunder. Thunderstorms happen mostly in summer and every

thunderstorm has lightning. Lightning can strike people and buildings, which is very dangerous.

Thunderstorms affect small areas when compared with hurricanes and winter storms. The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 30 minutes.

A volcano is a mountain with a large opening at the top through which melting rock, steam, gases escape from time to time with violent force from inside the earth. When pressure increases, eruptions occur. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening fill the air with small pieces. Eruptions can cause lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, falling ash and floods, which is likely to knock down entire forests, cause floods and earthquakes. Fresh volcanic ash can cause damage to the lungs of older people, babies and people with respiratory problems.
