1.What does it mean if people demand peace?

demand需要,要求(语气较强烈)

A.v. demand sth / demand that sb (should) do sth / demand (of sb.) to do sth

demand sth. from/of sb. 向某人要求某事物

(比较:require/request sb to do sth; require doing sth=require to be done,而demand 无此句型)She demanded to see her lawyer.

Her mother demanded that she (should ) be sent to hospital at once.

B. n. 常和for连用,也可接that引导的同位语从句(should+动词原形,should可省略)

These developments have created a great demand for home computers.

He made the demand that she (should) come earlier.

【拓展】in demand(for…)(对……)需求很大on demand一经要求

satisfy/ meet one’s demands 满足某人的要求

Step 2. Vocabulary and Reading

1. The war, which lasted until 1945, is known as the Second World War.

last v.

(1) 延续,持续(后面一般不接for)vi.

The war lasted (for) four years before the North won in the end.

(2)持久,继续存在vi.

The coat has lasted well. 这件衣服经久耐穿。

This weather won’t last. 这种天气持续不了多久。

(3)够……之用:保持供应充足vt.

We’ve got enough food to last us for three days.

【拓展】last adj.最后的;上一个的;最不可能的;最不适当的

December is the last month of the year.

He is the last person I want to see. 他是我最不想见的人。

He is the last person to do the job. 他是最不适合干这工作的人。

last adv. 最后;最近,上一次

He came last in the race.

I last saw him in New York two years ago.

last but not least (提及最后的人或物时说) 最后但同样重要的

Last but not least, I’d like to thank all you’ve done for me.

last n. ( the last) 最后来的人(或发生的事)

He is always the first to arrive and the last to leave.

2.During the war, Germany occupied many countries, including France.

occupy vt. 占领;占用(时间、空间);使忙碌/从事

occupation n. 占领;职业What’s your occupation?

The dinner and speeches occupied two hours.

The tall bookcases occupy a lot of space in his room.

He occupies an important position in the Ministry of Education.他在教育部充任要职。

He was occupied with (in writing) a novel. 他忙于写小说。

【归纳】正从事于……,专心于……

(1)be occupied in doing sth. = occupy oneself in doing sth.

be occupied with sth.= occupy oneself with sth.

(2)be busy with sth. / be busy (in) doing sth.

(3)be absorbed in (doing) sth

(4)be engaged in (doing) sth

3.The operation was extremely dangerous and many soldiers were killed before they even got off

the boats.这次登陆行动特别危险,许多士兵还没来得及下船就牺牲了。

before conj. 在……之前;……才……; ……就……; 还没来得及……就……

Three weeks went by before she realized her mistakes. 三周过去了,她才意识到她的错误。

The meeting lasted two hours before they reached an agreement.会议开了两个小时他们才达成了一致意见。

It won’t be long before they understand each other.他们不久就会互相了解。

4.The situation at Omaha Beach was so bad that the Us army commanders thought about

abandoning the invasion. Eventually, the soldiers made a breakthrough and the D-Day landings were successful. 奥马哈海滩的形势非常严峻,以至于美军司令员都考虑放弃进攻了。战士们最终取得了重大突破,诺曼底登陆获得成功。

5.The survivors lay on the beach, exhausted and shocked. 死里逃生的战士躺在沙滩上,疲惫不

堪,心有余悸。

exhausted and shocked过去分词(或形容词)作状语,说明主语的状况。

He turned away, disappointed.

The old lady, deeply moved, thanked Mr Li again and again.

The boy went back home, depressed(情绪低落)/ safe and sound(安然无恙).

6. Six men drowned before help arrived. Twenty men fell into the water and were picked up by

other boats. 六人在救援到达之前溺死。有二十人落水后被其他舰艇救起。

(1) drown v. 淹死;使溺死;(声音等)淹没,压过

Don't play by the river in case you fall in and drown! 不要在河边玩耍,以免你掉到河里淹死。

The cheers of the audience drowned the professor's voice.听众的欢呼声淹没了这位教授的声音。

drown oneself in埋头于He drowned himself in work. 他埋头工作。

(2)pick up停下来让某人搭车(船等);用车接人;救起;捡起;(无意间)学会;

接收(节目等);(健康等)恢复;变好(I believe things will pick up soon.)

7.The cemetery and memorial are situated on a cliff overlooking the beach and the English Channel, from where the boats attempted their landings. 墓地和纪念碑坐落在一处悬崖之上,俯视着海滩和英吉利海峡,当时一艘艘船只就试图从那里登陆。

8.rescue vt. & n. 援救, 营救(常与from连用rescue sb from the river)

It was not long before a helicopter arrived on the scene to rescue the survivors of the plane crash.

不久一架直升飞机飞到了现场,来搭救这次飞机失事的幸存者。

However, rescue operations are proving difficult.然而营救工作进行得很不顺利。

go /come to sb.'s rescue进行援救, 营救某人

We came to his rescue and pulled him out of the river.我们来救他,把他从河里拉了出来。
