Unit 11 Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?

二、教学向导

任务一:欢迎到我家

展示自己家的照片,附上一张简单的地图,向同伴或全班同学介绍自己家的地理位置,邀请同学到你家做客。

任务二:我们的学校

下周是学校的开放日,学生将负责接待来宾。让一组学生扮演来宾,另一组学生扮演接待者,进行问答练习。

任务三:我们的小区

一些澳大利亚交换生来我们学校学习一个月,他们想了解学校社区的情况,如:在哪里买生活用品,在哪里寄信,在哪里换钱等等。分别扮演中、澳学生,询问和介绍社区的情况。

任务四:中国旅游

介绍我国的旅游胜地,写一篇中国旅游指南。

语法:

宾语从句的用法宾语从句在复合句中做主句谓语动词或介词的宾语。

A.引导词:

1.陈述句用作宾语从句时,用that引导,可以省略。

I have seen the film, I told her.→I told her(that)I had seen the film.

2.一般疑问句用作宾语从句时,用if或whether引导。

Are you a student? Please tell me. →Please tell me if / whether you are a student.

Do you go to school by bike every day? Could you tell me?

→Could you tell me if/ whether you go to school by bike every day?

3.特殊疑问句用作宾语从句时,用原句中的疑问词引导。

Who are you waiting for? Can you tell me?

→Can you tell me who you are waiting for?

What did the do yesterday? I don’t know.

→I don’t know what he did yesterday.

B.时态:

1.主句是一般现在时,宾语从句时态不变。

2.主句是一般过去时,宾语从句时态要与主句时态保持一致。

C.语序:

宾语从句语序必须是陈述语序。

Period 1

Step 1: Lead-in Making conversations

T: Excuse me, Jim. May I use your dictionary?

S: Sorry, I left it at home.

T: Could you tell me where I can buy a dictionary?

S: You can buy one in a bookstore.

T: Is there any bookstore near here?

S: Go out of the school. There is one next to the school gate.

Step 2: 1a P86

T: Look at the picture. Where can you do the following things? Match each thing with a place in the picture.(Many different answers are possible). Make ss learn the new words of places.

Step 3: 1b. Listening practice

Listen and complete the conversations

Step 4: Speaking

Ask Ss: If you want to buy a gift, where will you go and how to get there?

buy a cup of milk tea, post a letter, buy the lunch buy some school things, buy a magazine, buy a toothbrush, buy a bowl of hot & dry noodles…

Show a map of the district near our school to Ss.Ask Ss to make dialogues in pairs.

Step 5: Make a conclusion

Show directions:

1. It’s over there(on the left / right).

2. Walk / Go along / down the road / street.

3. Go down this street until you reach the second traffic lights.

4. Turn right / Turn to the right.

5. Turn right at the second turning.

6. Take the second crossing at the …

7. Take the turning on your left / right.

8. It will take you about half an hour.

9. It’s about 10 minutes’ walk / ride.

10. It’s next to …/ in front of …/ behind …/ outside …/ opposite to…/ between A and B.

11. Take the elevator / escalator to the second floor.

12. Go past the bank.

Step 6: Listening 2a

Listen and number the directions in the order that you hear them. Add more sentences to the conclusion. Look at the picture, describe what a shopping mall is.

Homework:

Finish self-check.

Period 2

Step 1: Self-check Part 2

Check the homework. Ask Ss to read their dialogues.

Sample conversations:

1. S1: Excuse me, could you tell me where the bank is, please?

S2: Well, there is a bank on the Fifth Avenue. You can take a taxi there. It is about 15 minutes’ ride.

S1: Thanks.

2. S1: Excuse me, do you know where I can find a movie theater?

S2: Sure. Walk along the Central Street until you get to the Fifth Avenue. Turn right, and walk about 50 meters, the theater is just on your right.

S1: Thank you.

3. S1: Excuse me, can you please tell me how to get to the shopping mall?

S2: Sure. The shopping mall is also on the Fifth Avenue. It is next to the theater.

4. S1: Excuse me, could you tell me where there is a good place to eat?

S2: Sure. There are many good restaurants in our city. The nearest one is on the Central Street.

5. S1: Excuse me, can you tell me where the library is?

S2: Sure. The library is on the Garden Road. Take the No. 5 bus and get off at the third stop.

Turn left, walk about 100 meters, and you will see the library.

Step 2: Check the answers of part 1 in selfcheck.

Then use the adjectives to describe places.

Do activity 1a in section B.

T: What qualities are important for each place?

Write the words from the box next to each place.

Then add more works.

Step 3: Reading

Focus on the words about the mall.

Ask the Ss: Do you like going to the mall?

Why?

Is there anybody who doesn’t like going to the mall?

What’s the reason?

Read the article. Then list the advantages and disadvantages of going to the mall.

Step 4: Groupwork

Where do you usually hang out with friends?

At your house? At school? At a mall? At a park?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each place?

Homework: 1. English Weekly.

2. Recite 3a.

Period 3~4 Section B

Step 1: Warm-up and review.

T: Suppose you have a friend who comes to WH for the first time. Which places would you advise him to visit?

S: Hubei Museum / East Lake / Yellow Crane Tower…

T: Why?

S: Because it is interesting / fascinating / historic…

Step 2: Pair work

Get the Ss to work in pairs and talk about places in their own city. They may agree or disagree with their partners and give reasons.

Step 3: Listening(2a, 2b)

Play the tape for the first time and the Ss listen and write what the tourists ask about in each conversation. Then finish the task of 2a.

Play the tape again and ask the Ss to write where the man says the tourists should go. Then finish the task of 2b.

Step 4: Reading(3a)

Get the Ss to read the article in 3a and fill in the chart.

Explain some new words and useful expressions.

Homework:

1.(For period 3)Ask the Ss to complete a guide to Sunville using the information from 2a

and 2b. Ss can consult the passage in 3a to guide their writing.

2.(For period 4)Write a guide to their own city WH. Places like restaurants, museums, travel

spots should be included.

Period 5&6 Reading

Step 1: Pre-reading

Help Ss to understand the expressions we use depend on whom we are speaking to or how well we know them.

(different situations and the relationship between the speakers.)

Step 2: While-reading

The culture of a nation is in its language. When learning any language, it is not enough to only know correct grammar. It is also very import to know how to choose suitable language for every situation. It is done to show respect for the person you are talking or writing to.

Let the Ss read the passage on page 92 and explain some difficult language points to them.

Step 3: Post-reading(3a, 3b)

T: Look at the chart on page 93. We have learned that when we talk with different people, we should use different language to make requests. Read the three requests in the left column and describe situations when the requests would be suitable and then in the right column, make more polite requests.

Ask Ss to give their answers.

T: Now read the passage again and get the main idea of each paragraph. Then match each paragraph with its main idea in 3b.

Step 4: Role play(page 93, section 4)
