Passage One

Young women are wearing the new high platform shoes that came into style not long ago. Young women enjoy wearing stylish clothes. They also enjoy being taller while they are wearing these shoes.

But doctors are not very happy with the platform shoes. Foot specialists report that many women hurt their feet by wearing them. These specialists say that if you turn your ankle when wearing a normal shoe, the foot can easily return to its regular position. However, if you fall while walking on a high platform shoes, your foot may turn so far that you will break a bone in the foot or ankle. There is also a possibility that these shoes cause backaches. Many platform shoes have high heels, and women who wear them say that these shoes sometimes make them feel tired. (It has been found that people use more energy when walking on high-heeled shoes.)

Because the platforms are very thick and stiff, these shoes could cause into accidents. The driver might not be able to feel the

Passage two The High Cost of Living

Many families in the United States have a larger income now than

ever before, but people are finding it difficult to make ends meet anyway. Almost everyone is wondering, “ what happens to all my money? I never seem to have anything left to put away.”

Why isn’t a dollar worth as much as it used to be? One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a

family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, housing or rent, clothes, and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.

No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing but economists believe that workers and producers can make prices go up. As

workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more good. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time, if there’s a shortage of goods, the prices also go up.

For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies withhold gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.

Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet cost

3

of living, so many people plan a family budget. A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you’re spending too much on entertainment. Or if you’re spending too much on clothes, you may w ant to sew your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.

Passage three Teachers and Actors

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.

Watch a good teacher and you will see that he does not sit

motionless before his class: he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.

The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn’t mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important diffe rences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s. the actor has to speak words which he has learnt by hear; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways

4

in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem

natural on the stage.

A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don’t understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.

I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because their brains wouldn’t keep discipline: they could not keep strictly to what another had written.

11. What is the text about?

A. how to become a good teacher

B. what a good teacher should do outside the classroom

C what teachers and actors could learn from each other

D .the similarities and differences between a teacher’s work and an actor’s

12. In what way is a teacher’s work different from an actor’s?

A. The teacher must learn everything by heart.

B. The teacher knows how to control his voice better than an actor.

C. The teacher has to deal with unexpected situations.

D. The teacher has to use more facial expressions.

13. The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that____. A. students can move around in the classroom

B. students must keep silent while theatre audience needn’t

C. no memory work is needed for the students

D. the students must take part in their teachers’ plays

14. A go od teacher’s voice ______.

A. should be clear and fully under his control

B. should not be too loud or too low

C. should be fixed before he goes to class

D. all of the above

15. Which of the following is true?

A. A teachers have to learn by heart what they are going to say in class.

B. A teacher cannot decide beforehand what exactly he is going to say in class.

C. A teacher must speak louder than an actor.

D. A teacher must have a better memory than an actor.

Passage four Will It Matter if I Skip Breakfast?

If you have to miss one meal a day ( or if you want to do so), which meal will cause you fewest health problems if you don’t eat it? If they have to make a decision of this type, most people

(especially dieters or very busy people) will choose to skip breakfast.

However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast

( the meal which “ breaks” your “fast” which started the night before) to be the most important meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients we need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully with good humor. Nevertheless, many people skip breakfast or substitute a donut and a cup of coffee for a well-balanced meal. What happens if we ignore the importance of

5

breakfast?

One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participants included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83. during the experiment, these people were

given a variety of breakfasts, and sometimes, they had to skip breakfast completely. Special tests, including blood tests and endurance tests, were set up to analyze how well the participants’ bodies functioned when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.

The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast, he

or she will work more efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person’s work involves mental activity. The study showed that if schoolchildren eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast diet is inadequate.

The study also showed that, contrary to what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you are on a diet, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

16. In the word “breakfast”, “fast” probably means_______.

A. “ moving quickly”

B. “going without food”

C. “unlikely to go fast”

D. “fast food”

17. Many experts in the field of health think _________.

D. that breakfast is most important in a working day

D. were mostly young people under 20

Passage Five

The elephant is the only animal in the world with a trunk. It uses

its trunk in many ways. It pulls leaves off trees with its trunk and

英语阅读理解练习题20篇及解析

英语阅读理解练习题20篇及解析 一、英语阅读(日常生活类) 1.阅读理解 When it comes to helping developing countries, we often think about offering money in order that they can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies. These seem to be the most important basic needs in their lives. However, it's far from enough. We have to come up with better ideas. A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which he decided to invent after he visited a school in Cambodia. The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is not the same as the normal one that you can buy in the shops. One difference is that it will be covered in rubber so that it is strong and won't be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle in order that children can wind the computer up to give it extra power when needed. This special laptop computer will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to produce as many as 15 million laptop computers in the first year. The idea is that these computers will help the children's education as they will be able to access the Internet. These computers might not benefit the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children's education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term. Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again. In the UK. And probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year. The waste crested by throwing away thee old phones is very bed for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to achieve two important goals at the same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others. In other words, we will be able to" kill two birds with one "and that is always a good thing. (1)The underlined phrase "wind up" in paragraph 2 means . A. 吹风 B. 给……上发条 C. 摇上 D. 利用空气……使……(2)The laptop computer that Mr. Negroponte has designed . A. will be damaged much easier than the normal one B. has a special handle to access the Internet C. is cheap and can run with extra power D. can be helpful to find the people's own solutions (3)According to the passage, what benefit can we get from recycling old mobile phones? A. We can reduce the waste to protect the environment. B. We can help children in developing countries reuse the old mobile phones. C. it is good for the environment and very educative for phone users. D. It not only reduces the waste produced by developed countries but also helps the children in developing countries. (4)Mr. Negroponte's cheap computer is mentioned in the passage to . A. illustrate the kindness of people in the developed countries

(英语)英语试卷分类汇编英语阅读理解(及答案)含解析

(英语)英语试卷分类汇编英语阅读理解(及答案)含解析 一、阅读理解 1.阅读理解 What do you see when you look at abstract (抽象的)art? Can you understand it? Does it look like anything? Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn't want their art to be realistic(现实的). They were more interested in basic shapes and colours. Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his "blue period"). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his "rose period"). Many of his other paintings are called "cubist (立体派的)" because they are made of painted squares. After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so strange that many of his workmates didn't understand it. Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings. Other artists like the surrealists (超现实主义画家),were interested in subconsciousness (潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams. There are still many abstract artists around the world. That's the way many artists prefer. They want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it. (1)Which would be most like abstract art? A. A painting of a house. B. A sculpture of a car. C. A drawing of two people in a coffee house. D. A red and blue painting, with no clear subject. (2)What happened to Picasso's work after a long time? A. It became more abstract. B. It became less strange. C. He went from using red colours to using blue colours. D. He only painted with coloured squares. (3)How did Kandinsky express feelings? A. By using strong colours. B. By painting realistic people. C. By painting with a lot of symbols. D. By painting in red and pink colours. (4)Which of the following is NOT true? A. Picasso painted in many different styles. B. Dali was interested in dreams. C. Abstract artists feel each work of art only has one meaning. D. Magritte's art was full of symbols.

【英语】高考英语阅读理解试题经典

【英语】高考英语阅读理解试题经典 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 There are lots of ways to educate yourself on the Internet. You can find photos, documents, and films on almost any topic you can imagine. And at https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9515413704.html,, you can access lectures by artists, scholars, designers, technicians and others. TED began in 1984 as a conference that brought together individuals from the fields of technology, entertainment and design. It was intended to be a one-time event focusing on technology and design. The event ended up losing money, and it was six years before the founders tried it again. This time it worked, and since 1990, the TED conference has been an annual event. There are now two held every year, with topics as diverse as music, medicine, and money. Other specialized spin-off conferences address narrower issues. The TED website came from a desire to share the conferences with the world, to "offer free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers," as the website puts it. The current version of the site was launched in April 2007, and contains videos of talks given at the TED conferences around the world. The talks are transcribed into hundreds of languages. The TED website is owned by the Sapling Foundation, a non profit devoted to fostering the spread of great ideas. The Sapling foundation acquired TED in 2001. Since then, it has been focusing on using TED to broadcast ideas that might change the world. TED, of course, isn't immune to criticism. It's been called elitist(精英) for its high ticket prices (more than 6,000 dollars total). It's been accused by a few people of censorship for not publishing their talks. One controversial speaker was upset about being criticized by the conference's host afterward. The complaints, however, seem to be relatively few for such a large, long-running organization. And accusations of elitism ring hollow when so much is given away for free on TED's website. Whatever its failings, TED is a source of inspirational information for those who seek it out. (1)What is the main topic of the article? A.The case against TED B.What's on TED today. C.Pros and cons of https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9515413704.html,. D.What is TED (2)Which of the following statements is NOT true? A.The TED conference came after the success of https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9515413704.html,. B.Two TED conferences are now held every year.
