Before I go on vacation, I always plan my trip. For starters, I usually take a look at travel guide books or go on line and review possible destinations. Then, I checked the costs involved in travelling to that particular place. If I’m going by plane then I have to compare prices on airfare for different airlines. If I’m travelling by train then I have to look into train passes or tickets. I also need to locate hotel accommodations. Fortunately, I don’t mind staying at a cheap hotel or in motel. Finally, I try to plan money for meals and other sightseeing expenses. If I plan carefully, I usually have a good time.

Good morning, everybody. Welcome to our meeting. First of all, I’d like to talk about our sales this year. Please look at the screen. From this chart, you can see our sales this year have been very successful and we have already achieved all our sales targets for the year. Our salespeople have been working very hard and the department has performed very well. When we think back to the problems we had last year the success is especially pleasing. By that time sales were down by 10% and things did not look good at all. We made some difficult decisions and some people were not happy with them at first.

However, since then we’re happy to see that performance has improved.

Part V Writing

Subject: Department Managers Meeting

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I have received the marketing report of our company for the

first half of the year. The report shows that product sales have declined by 20%, and even as high as 50% in some places. Some of the possible causes of the decrease are as follows:

1. Buyers are more informed than ever. They know our products

and our customers. They have visited social networks and read consumer comments on our products.

2. Marketing is not providing what sales really need.

3. Some of our salespeople are good at interviewing but not good at sales.

4. Few salespeople have had formal sales training and most sales training is tactical, rather than focusing on the needs of buyers.

A department managers meeting will be held next Monday morning, at which the Marketing Department is required to put forward specific measures to make improvement so as to increase product sales.

Sincerely,

George Smith

General Manager
