Passage 1

Question 1to 5 are based on the following passage.

Looking back on my childhood. I am convinced that naturalists are born an d not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sister s soon abandoned their pressed(紧抱的) flowers and insects. Unlike them ,I hand no ear for music and languages, I was not an early reader and I could not do m ental arithmetic.

Before World war I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only t he dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. (76) Nor do I r ecall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who g athered next door . but I do have a crystal-clear memory of dogs, the farm ani mals , the local birds and above all ,the insects.

I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural w orld, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussin g my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight. I love discussing my favor ite topics and enjoy burning t he midnight oil, reading about other people’s ob servations and discoveries .then something happens that brings these observatio ns together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle(谜) ,because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publ ishing 300 papers and books ,which some might honor with the title of scientifi c research.

But curiosity ,a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential quali ties required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. Passage 2

Question 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to f ind how “foolish” the Finnish people are.

Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tel l the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to atten d to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also s erve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go t o the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show the ir good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loo se check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of frie nds to dine free of charge.

The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. (77) They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they j ust say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.

With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a he aven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they hav

e attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account o

f the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everythin

g they do, living in suc

h a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.

(78) In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for peop le to be on guard against others?

6.While taking a taxi in Finland, _____

A. a passenger can go anywhere without having to pay the driver

B. a passenger pays two US dollars for a taxi ride

C. a passenger can never be turned down by the taxi driver wherever he wa nts to go

D. a passenger needs to provide good faith demonstration before they leav

e without paying

7. We know from the passage that big hotels in Finland_____

A. provide meal for only those who live in the hotels

B. provide meals for any diners

C. provide free wine and charge for food

D. are mostly poorly managed

8. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The workers in Finland are paid by the hour.

B. The bosses in Finland are too busy to check the working hours of their employees.

C. The workers are always honest with their working hours.

D. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about t he pay.

9. The word “those” in the last paragraph probably refers to _____

A. people who often take taxis

B. people who often have meals in big hotels

C. people who are dishonest

D. people who are worthy of trust

10. It can be concluded that _____

A. Finnish people are not smart enough in daily life

B. Finland has been a good place for cheats

C. the Finnish society is of very high moral level

D. all the Finns are rich

Passage 3

There are many factors which may have an influence on adults and children being able to lead a healthy life.

ents. They also have sporting and leisure activities as well as school expecta tions.

The busyness also adds another factor: the need to use cars to get from o ne place to another quickly.

Today, society places a lot of emphasis on technology. Computers, DVDs. C Ds, television, PlayStations and Xboxes have become major leisure activities, r ather than traditional more active pursuits. This has led to a more sedentary l ifestyle.

The media provide entertainment and information. (79)Unfortunately, they also promote fast food which fits easily into busy lifestyles. It is much more convenient at times to buy a quick takeaway rather than prepare a meal. The med ia constantly bombard(轰炸) their audience with ‘perfect’ body images, the ne ed to buy the most fashionable clothes, the most up-to-date computer games, the best places to visit and the best things to do.

Environments vary. We may be exposed to pollution , such as cigarette smo ke. This can be harmful to people who suffer from breathing difficulties. (80)E nvironments where passive smoking is unavoidable make it difficult to lead a he althy life.

It is important factor influencing healthy lifestyles is motivation. Or the desire to be healthy. Any person who wants to be healthy will find a way to be healthy —if he/she is motivated enough!

电大学位英语试题及答案

学位英考试试题-1 Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Archaeology, like many academic words, comes from Greek and means, more or less, “the study of old things”. So, it is really a part of the study of history. However, most historians use paper evidence, such as letters, paintings and photographs, but archaeologists (考古学家) learn from the objects left behind by the humans of long ago. Normally, these are the hard materials that don't break down or disappear very quickly—things like human bones and objects made from stone and metal. It is very unusual to find anything more than the hard evidence of history--normally, the bacteria (细菌) in the air eat away at soft materials, like bodies, clothes and things made of wood. Occasionally, things are different. In 1984, two men made an amazing discovery while working in a bog called Lindow Moss, in the north of England. A bog is a very wet area of earth, with a lot of plants growing in it. It can be like a very big and very thick vegetable soup—walk in the wrong place and you can sink and disappear forever. The men were working when one of them saw something sticking out—a human foot! Naturally, the men called the police, who then found the rest of the body. Was it a case of murder? Possibly--but it was a death nearly two thousand years old. The two men had found a body from the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. Despite being so old, this body had skin, muscles, hair and internal organs—the scientists who examined him were able to look inside the man's stomach and find the food that he had eaten for his last meal! Why was this man so well preserved? (76) It was because he was in a very watery environment, safe fi:om the bacteria that need oxygen to live. Also, the water in the bog was very acidic. The acid preserved the man's skin in the way that animal skin is preserved for leather coats and shoes. How did he die? Understandably, archaeologists and other scientists wanted to know more about the person that they called,“Lindow Man”. (77) His hands and fingernails suggested that he hadn't done heavy manual work in his life—he could have been a rich man. They found that he hadn't died by accident. The archaeologists believe that he was sacrificed to three different gods. 1. Which language does the word “archaeology”come from? A. French. B. Greek. C. Roman. D. German. 2. The word “these” in the first paragraph refers to_______. A. letters B. photographs C. paintings D. objects 3. Which of the following helped to preserve“Lindow Man”? A. Ice and Iow temperature. B. Bacteria and oxygen. C. Soil and energy. D. Acid and water. 4. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

For each of them there are four choices marked A ,B ,C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: The reflective towers of New York City ,which is on the Atlantic migrating (迁徙的)route ,can be deadly for birds. “We live in an age of glass,” said https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9a8683718.html,urel ,an architect.(76)“ It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights ,and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is.” About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into building in the city each year. Often ,they strike the lower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat (栖息地)loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year. (77)As glass office and apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standard for new building in July. The United States Green Building Council , a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings , will introduce a bird-safety credit this as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes , however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviolet (紫外线的)signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and net are the main options available. Often , only one section of a building needs to be changed. “ You don‘ t necessarily have to treat every window ,” https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9a8683718.html,urel said. “ It would be too expensive to do the whole building. ” The Jacob Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations , is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns. 1. What is the main idea of the passage? A. New York is a city of glass towers. B. Glass tower are dangerous for migrating birds. C. New York adopted new safety standards for buildings. D. Glass towers are a new trend in the United States. 2. What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds? A. Climate change B. Habitat loss C. Lack of food D. Crashing into buildings. 3. What does the word “fixes” in the third paragraph probably mean ? A. Choices B. Explanations C. Solutions D. Developments 4. ___ are used in the alteration of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. A. Dot patterns B. Shades C. Nets D. Covers 5. Which of the fowling statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. In many cases, the whole building needs to be altered to prevent bird crashes. B. The Jacob K.Javits Convention Center is the first building to deal with the problem of bird crashes. C. About 90 , 000 birds are killed due to habitat loss in New York City each year. D. Unfortunately , glass designs that use ultraviolet signals are still in their early stages. Passage 2 Question 6 to 10 are based on the fowling passage: Today‘s students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F.D.R. , and they live in a world where amazing innovations (革新)are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford;Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital (数字的), they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship (企业家才能)education , in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them. A report published last year by the Kauffman Foundation , which finances programs to promote innovation on campuses, noted that more than 50, 000 entrepreneurship programs are offered on two-and four-year campuses—up from just 250 courses in 1985. Lesa Mitchell , a Kauffman vice president, says that the foundation is extending the reach of its academic influence , which used to be found only in business schools.
