Levy told the prize’s website she wanted to write about that period because it was part of her family’s history.

Ours has become a society of employees. A hundred years or so ago only one of every five Americans at work was employed, i.e. worked for somebody else. Today only one out of five is not employed but working as a factory laborer, the employee of today is increasingly a middle-class person with a formal regular education, holding a professional or management job requiring professional and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterized American society during these last fifty years. Middle-class and upper-class employees have been the fastest-growing groups in our working population growing so fast that the industrial worker, the oldest child of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in importance in number.

Yet you will find little, if anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a great deal of very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion(提升). You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field. Every trade requires different skills, sets different standards and requires a different preparation. Yet they all have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business or in government, employeeship is more important to success than the special professional knowledge or skills. Certainly more people fail because they do not know the requirements of being an the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative(管理上的)work, the greater the emphasis on ability to work tithing the organization rather than on technical abilities or professional knowledge.

59. It is suggested that fifty years ago .

A. to be more successful in his work

B. to be more specialized in his field

C. to solve technical problems

D. to develop his professional skills

C

The time you spend at the office may be the most stressful(紧张的) part of your day, but it doesn’t have to be. You have a greater ability to shape your office environment than you may realize.

Tale breaks throughout the day. It will help clear your mind and relieve pressure. Something as simple as going to the water cooler for a drink may do the trick.

Take part in a noontime or an after-work exercise class. This will give you a chance to relax and a way to relieve stress.

To help your workday go smoothly, try arranging your activities. Do more demanding work in the morning, when your energy level is higher, and easier work later in the day, when you may be tired.

Try listening to music recordings, such as a pounding surf or songbirds, to help you relax. Such tapes are sold in many shops. Use headphones if you are listening to them in the middle of the workday.

Get to work early or stay late once a week. You may be able to complete more when you change your daily work.

If your stress comes from job insecurity, take stock of yourself. Renew your knowledge, and remind yourself of your skills and strengths. Also, make sure you keep up with new developments in your fields. This will make you valuable to employers.

Don’t let rumors(谣言)at work, which are usually false, cause your worry. A co-worker may be just thinking out loud about worst-case imagined events.

If your office is less structured(or if you are the boss), consider a company mascot(吉祥物). A cat or dog can do wonders for workers’morale.

63. Which of the following can work out your stress at work?

A. Having rests during the day.

B. Doing hard work in the afternoon.

C. Never to learn new things.

D. Getting up early or staying up late.

A. The disadvantages at work

B. How to improve your work

C. How to reduce stress at work

D. The greatest problem – stress at work

D

Americans tend to put their own special brand on any foreign import and equestrian(马术)sports are no exception. It’s hard to imagine a horse show in Paris or Brussels, for example, opening with a parade of mule teams.

American carriage contests differ in more significant ways as well. Professional athletes dominate European shows because of the large cash prizes, but American competitions are strictly for amateurs. Veteran pleasure driver Elizabeth Cole says it gives the shows a very different atmosphere. “Granted, everybody wants to win a ribbon when different type of sport where people will help each other; if someone forgot a whip, or they forgot part of their equipment, one of the other competitors will probably come up and say, ‘well, I have an extra you can borrow.’It’s a very friendly atmosphere.”

The absence of a big prize money also tends to draw competitors of a different age. Jim Keithly, host of the Cannon Classic, says American carriage enthusiasts are generally older than those in Europe. “Our oldest competitor here, he drives two ponies, and he is 78! When people are young, they tend to go out and ride hunter-jumpers, and do a lot of activities,” said Jim Keithly. “As the body ages a little bit, that’s not as much fun as it once was, and so a lot of those folks learn to…hey, this carriage driving is kind of neat. It doesn’t hurt the body as bad as being thrown around on top of a horse.”

The horses themselves aren’t always members of distinguished breeds. At this year’s Tennessee Classic, the big winner was Linda Ward and her pony Casper. Casper has no known bloodline and was on the verge of starving to death when Ms. Ward bought him for$100. Four years later, the pair won the most prestigious carriage competition in America. “Last year I went to Walnut Hill, Pitsford, New York,” she said. “It’s pretty much by invitation, so you pretty much have to have won a lot, be very competitive. So I wroth them a letter and sent them a picture of my turn-out. And so, I was invited to go up there. And we won four ribbons there.”

One thing that American and European equestrian sports do share is a respect for tradition. Show Judge Dade Bushneck inspects each them to insure that the carriage, harness and even the driver’s clothing are all authentic to the heyday of pleasure driving ——the late 19th century. “We carry spares with us,” said Dede Bushneck. “In the old days, everybody did, because you would leave your farm, and maybe go I don’t know how many miles to another farm. And if you broke down, you had to have your tools with you, so, tools to get you back on the road and home.”

B. some elderly people can also take part in equestrian sports

69. The underlined word “heyday” in the last paragraph probably means .

A. The golden time.

B. Days without orders.

C. Memorable moments.

C. The carriage contests in America are especially dangerous.

D. Both Europeans and Americans enjoy carriage contests very much

Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students. If a long reading assignment is given, teachers expect students to be familiar with the information in the examination. (Courses are not designed only for students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed only for students to pass exams.) the ideal(完美的) student is considered to be one who is motivated (目标明确的)to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Grade-conscious(清醒的) students may be frustrated (受挫) with the teachers who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned with short written comments but not with a grade. Even if a grade is not given, the student is responsible for learning the material assigned.

When research is assigned, the professor in the United States expects the students to take the initiative(积极性)and complete the assignment with less guidance. It is the students’responsibility to find books, magazines, and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works, but they expect students, particularly graduate students, to be able to use all the reference materials in the library.

Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be over-dependent on them. In the United States, professors have other duties teaching. Often they are responsible for management within their department. In addition(此外),they may be required to publish articles and books. Therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach(接近) a professor during office hours or make an appointment.

71. The sentence “Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams.”, means

D. teachers design courses for lectures only

72. Professors in the united states usually that .

A. the students to know all the answers

B. the students to take the initiative and be independent

C. the students never to ask for their advice

D. the students to work together and help each other

73. The main idea of this passage is that .

A. students should learn independently

B. students should learn under close guidance of their professors

C. students should learn how to work together

D. students should not learn mainly for high grades

74. If a student has a problem with classroom work, he or she should .

A. make an appointment with the professor a week before

B. approach a professor after class

C. turn to the professor for help in his office

D. go to the professo r’s home

75. What is considered to be a good student?

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as

语篇提能 阅读理解 A Lobsters (龙虾) can be found throughout the world's oceans, with the exception of the north and south polar regions. Different types of lobster choose different areas to live. Many lobsters live in shallow water in the coastal areas around islands. One group of lobsters, called deep-sea lobsters, lives in the cold, deep sea. When it comes to predators (捕食者), humans have to be placed first on the list thanks to a multi-billion dollar fishing industry. In the oceans lobsters face threats from a range of fish and sea mammals. Atlantic Cod Atlantic cod are found throughout the Atlantic Ocean at depths of between 200 and 440 feet. Small cod are primarily bottom feeders. Fully-grown cod will eat pretty much anything they can swallow whole including lobsters. Summer Flounder The summer flounder is a flat fish. What is unique about the fish is that both its eyes are on one side of its body. They stay close to the sea beds in the Atlantic waters off the coast of North America. They are effective predators that search for food on the sea floor. The flounder has sharp teeth capable of crushing (粉碎) small lobsters. Harbor Seals Found in Arctic and sub-arctic waters in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the harbor seals rest on sandy beaches and take to the water to hunt. Seals have a varied diet, eating a range of fish. They also eat lobsters. Wolffish The wolffish is found in coastal waters on both sides of the North
