He is too big, too fat.

He is fat and overweight.

He is seriously overweight,

I mean, way beyond plump!

He has ballooned out to an incredible size. He’s so fat now he can scarcely walk.

Now the planet is getting global warming. The weather is not good.

Global warming is a big problem. The ice is melting.

Global warming is causing significant climate change. For example, the glaciers are getting smaller and weather patterns are changing.

Global warming is a major threat. Glaciers are dwindling and potentially the sea level could rise and flood many coastal cities.

Autumn in Beijing is nice but the winter is too much cold.

The autumn in Beijing is a nice period, but it gets chilly from late October and the winter is very cold.

Autumn is lovely in Beijing but the winter can be freezing. Temperatures drop below zero and the wind makes it even colder.

Beijingers complain that the autumn is too short. You can understand their point of view because when winter arrives, you really need long johns and gloves and scarves and all the gear because the temperatures can really plummet.

I am not good at communicating with people. I do not like to go the party.

I am quit e shy so I don’t often go to parties.

I am a little introverted. I mean that sometimes I prefer to be alone.

I guess it’s fair to say that I’m a little introverted. I mean I like parties and people but sometimes I need to spend time alone to recharge my batteries.

Do…

Project interest and energy, and put energy into your voice and into your body language

Listen carefully, and don’t misunderstand the question. And then get to the point!

Maintain good eye contact with the examiner

Be as original as you can

Grab opportunities to use some of the less common verb tenses like the present perfect or the conditionals

Make sure your pronunciation is clear

But don’t…

Don’t trot out memorized replies because they sound dull and boring

Don’t ask the examiner questions, because they don’t have time to reply

And now here’s your topic. I’d like you to talk about a news story that interested you.”

contamination (污染) wind (风)

ocean (海洋) tsunami (海啸)

media (媒体)

A news story1 that real ly impressed me in 2011 was about the nuclear disaster in Japan, in Fukushima. Um, I remember2 very clearly that night, when the news came out, I was at a bar in Shuang jing, and we started getting news. People were receiving3 news on their phones. Some people were trying… onto the net. They were going online, and I know my first reaction was to call my mum and to ask her to close the windows in the house and also I remember4 texting my best friend who has a young brother and, you know5, sort of saying to her, “Hey, you need to check out what’s happening online. Maybe there’s a nuclear disaster happening in J apan.” And in fact here in China we were lucky.

I mean the wind blew a lot of the, um, the radiation6 into the ocean rather than7 towards us here, but even in China they found there had been8 some traces of radiation in vegetables. But I mean it was an absolutely terrible disaster and the Japanese people were… Actually my dad has been to Sendai. It’s so heavily9 populated… The whole of Japan, it’s not a very big country in terms of landmass, but it’s got a big population, and people were overwhelmed10. That tsunami, terrible… The farmers that lived in that area, I mean they couldn’t leave their land because otherwise who would feed their animals and so they just had to kind of sit there and hope for the best. So it was a terrible disaster, and of course it has made people all around the world much more cautious about nuclear power… Um, I saw on CCTV 9 that people in Europe11 are worried about nuclear power at the moment too, and they want to get rid of their nuclear reactors.

Part Two

Saving Private Ryan

Well, actually1, the kind of films I like best are probably2 the older ones. For example3, one of my favourites is Saving Private Ryan. I think I like war

movies and I particularly like that one, I suppose4 because5 the acting is excellent with Tom Hanks6 and a bunch of other people who are really really good. It’s a

good story but I suppose the thing that is most impressive for me is that initial opening scene where the troops are actually landing in Normandy on the beaches. It’s

very meaningful for me because my dad was in the Second World War and also because I visited those beaches in Normandy7. It’s easy for me, having been there8, to

imagine what those guys were actually facing as they came off the landing craft and had to face a hail of bullets from the German machine gun posts. And I think the

other reason I really like that film is because it represents America when America was great, when America was at its best. Around the time of the Second World War, I

think America was a beacon (灯塔) for many countries. It seemed to be freer, and more powerful, more hopeful, more optimistic as well as gutsy9 (勇敢的). It seemed to

offer more pleasure for human beings as a

nation and to be less cluttered up by old traditions that weren’t very useful any more. So I think that’s one of the reasons

I really like that film10 because it represents the best of the US whereas now I guess the US is a bit more in decline.

1. 在发 /?/ 音时,比如读usually /'ju??u?li/, measure /'me??/, casual /'k??u?l/ 和 juice /d?u?s/ 时,中国人通常会把 usually 读成

/ju:r?li/。

/?n'wa?t/,把development /d?'vel?pm?nt/ 读成/ d?' wel?pm?nt /。

His wallet may be full /ful/, but he is still a fool /fu:l/。

Describe a foreign culture that you like You should say 1.what culture it is and how you know about it 2.what differences there are between that culture and your own and why you like that foreign culture. 1. Which culture and how I know about it I'm going to talk about France and French culture. I know France quite well because it was the first foreign country that I visited as a child. I've been on several family holidays there, and I lived and worked in Paris for a while after finishing university. 2. Cultural differences The first thing that comes to mind when I think about France is the bread! I love the fact that French people buy fresh baguettes every morning, usually from small local bakeries or 'patisseries'; it makes a change from the loaves of sliced bread that most of us buy from the supermarket here in the UK. One slightly negative difference I noticed in Paris is that Parisians don't seem to make friends with their work colleagues to the same extent as we do here. 3. What I like about it I really like the café culture in France. You can always find somewhere interesting to sit and have a coffee and chat

Chapter 1 Importance of structure 发音;读法) 这考查你的重音和语调 Vocabulary(词汇):Use BIG words, but make sure they are pronounced correctly and used in the correct context! 语法:Don’t worry too much about making mistakes but be sure to use a variety of ways to describe different tenses and try to use high-level grammar. Fluency/Coherence (流利/连贯):There are many skills involved with this part! The most important skill-structure-is what this book is about! To simplify, “fluency”refers to how natural you are and “coherence”refers to how clear/well-organized you are. In particular, in both the speaking and writing tests, structure is very important. (这一点同样适用于口语考试,如果你有疑惑,follow this guideline!)Chapter 2 Basic structure Here is the basic structure that you can/should use for almost every question: Firstly, when you respond to a question, you answer needs some kinds of introduction. Let’s call this the: say something stage When the examiner ask you a question, don’t directly answer the question (even if you only say

These days there are no real rules for a western wedding; even religious ceremonies can be held at a couple's venue of choice, or outdoors. Many people like to stick to traditional ways though, so here are some aspects of a Western wedding. The ceremony This is often held in a religious building such as a church, chapel, synagogue or mosque. If the wedding is a civil ceremony, the Registry Office of the local government offices becomes the venue. In church, the friends and family of the bride sit on one side of the aisle, and those of the groom on the other. The bride arrives last, and the Groom and the best man wait for her at the end of the aisle, near the altar. The bride is 'given away' by her father, a custom with roots in the idea of women being men's property! During the ceremony, the couple exchange marriage vows and gold rings, guarded until this moment by the best man, and the broom is given permission by the person marrying them to kiss the bride. As they leave the church, their guests throw rice or paper confetti and may tie old shoes and lucky horseshoes to the back of their car, which is also decorated. They drive to the wedding reception in a hotel, pub or garden, or at home. The white dress and trimmings Bridal gowns of ancient times were brightly colored to signify joy, but many brides wear white, supposedly to represent purity or virginity. In fact, Queen Victoria is commonly credited withbeing the first bride to wear white as a sign of wealth. Long ago the bridegroom would cover hisbride's head, to conceal her identity if he had capture her, or as protection from evil spirits, resultin g in the bridal veil, usually made of net or lace. Brides may also wear a garte r,originally intended to keep her stockings up, and carry a bouquet of flower s. These last aregiven away after the ceremony; the garter is torn off and gi ven to a lucky bachelor, or evenauctioned, while the bouquet is thrown by th e bride to her single female friends: the personwho catches it will marry next. These traditions actually have roots in England when guestswould tear at the bride's clothing and flowers to share in her happiness. While fleeing from her attackers, the bride would toss her bouquet into the mob to placate them. The wedding cake Traditionally in England, wheat cakes were broken over the bride's head to br ing good luck and fertility. During the reign of King Charles II of England, a b aker stacked these cakes andfrosted them, creating the wedding cake we kno w today. The bride and groom kiss over theirtall cake for luck and then cut th e first piece together. Feeding cake to each other is a symbol of how they will always trust and provide for each other, and feed and nourish their relationshi p. The honeymoon Back when a bride married by capture and not by choice, the groom would take h er away followingthe wedding, and keep her in hiding for a full cycle of the m

Today I am going to talk about collecting postcards—a hobby that is both fascinating and financially rewarding. I would like to explain the basic kinds of collectible postcards, why they are so valuable, and how collectors buy and sell their cards. It’s Saturday morning, and you are helping clean out your grandmother’s house. After working a while, you stumble upon a trunk, open it, and discover hundreds of old postcards. Thinking about getting to your driving lesson on time, you start tossing the cards into the trash can. Congratulations! You have just thrown away a year’s tuition.

1) At what age did you start studying mathematics? I can't exactly remember, but it was probably in my first year at primary school when I was 5 years old. I probably learnt simple addition at that age. 2) Do you like mathematics? Why / why not? I don't dislike maths, but I wouldn't say that I've ever really liked the subject either. I'm happy to do simple calculations, but my brain can't cope with the complex stuff! 3) Is it necessary for everyone to learn mathematics? Yes, I think it is. We all need a basic grounding in maths so that we can do daily tasks, like managing our money, working out bills, and so on. 4) Do you prefer to use a calculator when doing mathematics? It depends. I quite like exercising my brain with anything that's easy enough, but I use the calculator on my phone for anything tricky.
