1-4 Structure analysis & writing

Structured writing: Practice

Some bookworms in my dormitory often spend hours reading their "Bible", Practical English Grammar, and do a lot of exercises in that book, but I don't care about it at all. My assumption is since I have never learned Chinese grammar, what's the sense of learning English grammar? In fact, English grammar has always been a big headache to me.

English grammar is very complicated because, unlike Chinese, there are many verb tenses. Even stranger than verb tenses, English grammar also contains something very confusing. For example, I don't remember how many times my middle school

teacher tried to "impose" the differences between used to and be used to on us. Sometimes he would go on with the explanation for 20 minutes or so. He even summarized the differences by listing three or four points for us to memorize. However, they could never stay in my head. I don't remember how many times I got it wrong with the sentences containing used to or be used to on my exams. I was really confused with these two phrases, and I can never get them right.

In brief, I'm allergic to learning English grammar. Curiously, I just wonder if the native speakers of English have a microcomputer in their brain to help them utter the two phrases promptly with just a click of their brain mouse!

②Chinese calligraphy is a unique art and the unique art treasure in the world. The formation and development of the Chinese calligraphy is closely related to the emergence and evolution of Chinese characters. In this long evolutionary process, Chinese characters have not only played an important role in exchanging ideas and transmitting culture but also developed into a unique art form. Calligraphic works well reflect calligraphers' personal feelings, knowledge, self-cultivation, personality, and so forth, thus there is an expression that "seeing the calligrapher's handwriting is like seeing the person". As one of the treasures of Chinese culture, Chinese calligraphy shines splendidly in the world's treasure house of culture and art.

unit1 When I think of people in this world who have really made a difference, I think of my parents. They were truly saints among ordinary people. I was one of the ten children my parents adopted. They rescue (挽救)each of us from a life of poverty and loneliness. They were hardly able to restrain(克制)themselves from bringing home more children to care for. If they had had the resources (资源)they certainly would have. Most people do not realize how much they appreciated(感激)someone until they pass away. My sisters and brothers and I did not want this to happen before we uttered(说)the words "Thank you" to our parents. Although we have all grown up and scattered(散落) about the country, we got back together to thank our parents. My brother Tom undertook(从事,承担)the task of organizing the event. Every Friday night, Mom and Dad have had the ham dinner special at the same restaurant for the last twenty years. That is where we waited without their knowing. When we first caught a glimpse (瞥一眼)of them coming across the street, we all hid underneath(在…之下) a big table. When they entered, we leapt out and shouted, "Thank you, Mom and Dad." My brother Tom presented(提供)them with a card and we all hugged. My Dad pretended that he had known we were under the table

新视野大学英语读写第三版第三册原文及翻译

Never, ever give up! 1 As a young boy, Britain's great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, attended a public school called Harrow. He was not a good student, and had he not been from a famous family, he probably would have been removed from the school for deviating from the rules. Thankfully, he did finish at Harrow and his errors there did not preclude him from going on to the university. He eventually had a premier army career whereby he was later elected prime minister. He achieved fame for his wit, wisdom, civic duty, and abundant courage in his refusal to surrender during the miserable dark days of World War II. His amazing determination helped motivate his entire nation and was an inspiration worldwide. 2 Toward the end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the patriotic young boys at his old school, Harrow. The headmaster said, "Young gentlemen, the greatest speaker of our time, will be here in a few days to address you, and you should obey whatever sound advice he may give you." The great day arrived. Sir Winston stood up, all five feet, five inches and 107 kilos of him, and gave this short, clear-cut speech: "Young men, never give up. Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never, never!" 在他担任总理的时期即将结束之际,他被邀请在他的旧学校哈罗向爱国青年发表演讲。校长说:“年轻的先生们,我们这个时代最伟大的演讲者,几天后将到这里向你们讲话,你们应该听从他给你们的任何合理建议。”伟大的一天到来了。温斯顿爵士站了起来,他身高五英尺五英寸,体重107公斤,简短而清晰地说:“年轻人,永不放弃。永不放弃!永不放弃!从不,从不,从不,从不!” 3 Personal history, educational opportunity, individual dilemmas —none of these can inhibit a strong spirit committed to success. No task is too hard. No amount of preparation is too long or too difficult. Take the example of two of the most scholarly scientists of our age, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. Both faced immense obstacles and extreme criticism. Both were called "slow to learn" and written off as idiots by their teachers. Thomas Edison ran away from school because his teacher whipped him repeatedly for asking too many questions. Einstein didn't speak fluently until he was almost nine years old and was such a poor student that some thought he was unable to learn. Yet both boys' parents believed in them. They worked intensely each day with their sons, and the boys learned to never bypass the long hours of hard work that they needed to succeed. In the end, both Einstein and Edison overcame their childhood persecution and went on to achieve magnificent discoveries that benefit the entire world today.

Unit 1 The Way to Success 课文A Never, ever give up! 永不言弃! As a young boy, Britain's great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, attended a public school called Harrow. Toward the end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the patriotic young boys at his old school, Harrow. Never, never, never, never!" Personal history, educational opportunity, individual dilemmas - none of these can inhibit a strong spirit committed to success. Einstein didn't speak fluently until he was almost nine years old and was such a poor student that some thought he
