“The situation in Syria is terrible --so terrible that I think it stops kids from dreaming. I wish I could just give them a little bit of hope and make them believe that they can have dreams,” says Obada Kassoumah, who is a Syrian student in Tokyo now. He has become a translator of Japanese comics into Arabic(阿拉伯语).

As a student at university in Syria, Obada received a scholarship to go to Japan on an exchange program. That was in 2012, and the unrest(动乱) in the country had already started. When the situation got too dangerous, his parents decided to send him to live with his aunt in Jordan until he could leave for Tokyo.

When his scholarship ended a year later, he was able to stay in Japan as a regular student, and picked up a part-time job translating Captain tsubasa.“I watched it as a kid and I loved it,” says Obada. “It’s a story about a kid having a dream to become a professional

football player and working hard to make that dream come true. That’s something should make these kids see.”

“For Syrian kids it is very important to be able to escape from reality for a while. And these books can also give them some hope for their own future,” explains Prof. Masanori Naito, who had spent several years looking for ways to help kids affected by the conflict. One of the places where Captain Tsubasa now provides a small escape from reality is a refugee(难民) home where copies were handed out to around 60 refugees. “What the kids usually get are of course clothes and food, and so they were really surprised when they suddenly had Japanese comic books in their own language. And you really could tell that from their eyes!” says Prof. Masanori Naito.

Back in Tokyo, Obada Kassoumah has decided to keep translating even more adventures of Captain Tsubasa into Arabic. He hopes his translations will put a smile on the face of a Syrian child somewhere, trying to forget the terror of the past.

24. Why did Obada translate the Japanese comics?

C. To inspire Syrian kids.

B. around 60 refugees lack basic necessities of life

D. the conflict has ruined Masanori Naito’s hope for the future

27. What will Obada do next?

A city beneath the sea

French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio discovered the remains of Heracleion, a long-lost Egyptian city, beneath the waves of the Mediterranean Sea in 2000. After more than a decade of research, he and his team are now presenting their discoveries to the world.

Heracleion was founded around the 8th century B.C.(800-700B.C). Because Heracleion was located at the mouth of the Nile River, it was an important economic and trading centre. 36._____________________.

“It was the major international trading port for Egypt at this time,” says Damian Robinson. He is the director of the Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the University of Oxford and working with Goddio’s team.

37.___________________. This, as well as a rising ocean and possibly even earthquakes, eventually caused the city to sink around 100 A.D.

The underwater site has proved rich in historical artifacts(人工制品). 38._________.

“The archaeological evidence is simply amazing,” says Oxford University archaeologist Sir Barry Cunliffe.” By lying untouched and protected by sand on the seafloor for centuries, the artifacts are brilliantly preserved.”

39._________________. They have also found miniature Egyptian coffins that may have held animal mummies! Additionally, the remains of 64 ancient ships and more than 700 anchors lay buried in the sand around the ruins of the city.

But Goddio and his team have barely scratched(刮)the surface of Heracleion’s remains. “40 _________________.” says Goddio.” We will probably have to continue working for the next 200 years for it to be fully revealed and understood.”

A. The Greeks called it Heracleion.

B. We are just at the beginning of our research.

C. All trade from nearby Greece had to pass through Heracleion.

D. For many years, historians were not sure if this city ever existed.

E. But the ground on which Heracleion was built wore away over many centuries.

F. The researchers have uncovered numerous 15-foot-tall statues as well as hundreds of

smaller artifacts.

G. In fact, because the city sank to the bottom of the ocean, many ancient pieces have

remained undisturbed.

高中英语素养阅读限时练习(高二上11)附答案解析

高中英语素养阅读限时练习(高二上11)(附答案详细解析) (建议用时:40分钟) In seventeen seventy-six, a new nation declared its freedom from Britain. The Declaration of Independence was the document written to express the reasons for seeking that freedom. It stated that all men were created equal. It said that all men had the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not every citizen of the new United States of America had one important right, however. That was the right to vote. At first, the only people permitted to vote in the United States were white men who owned property and could read. By eighteen sixty, most white male citizens over the age of twenty-one had the right to vote. The Fourteenth and Fifteenth corrections to the Constitution gave black male citizens the right to vote. These corrections were passed in eighteen sixty-eight and eighteen seventy. In America in the eighteen hundreds, Women had no economic independence. For example, everything a woman owned when she got married belonged to her husband. If a married woman worked, the money she made belonged to her husband. In addition, women had no political power. They did not have the right to vote. In the eighteen fifties, women organized in an effort to gain voting rights. Their campaign was called the women's suffrage movement. American women sought to gain that right for more than seventy years. One of the leaders of the movement was Susan B. Anthony of Massachusetts. Miss Anthony was a teacher. She believed that women needed economic and personal independence. She also believed that there was no hope for social improvement in the United States until women were given the same rights as men. The rights included the right to vote in public elections. Susan B. Anthony was born in eighteen twenty. Her parents were members of the Quaker religion. She became one, too. The Quakers believed that the rights of women should be honored. They were the first religious group where women shared the leadership with men. 1. His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation. Kevin took out his scrapbook (剪贴簿). The exams had just finished, and summer vacation had just started. Now he was free as a bird — free to draw, paint, play basketball, and watch television…anything he wanted to do. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling (使惊吓) him. It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!” screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.” Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this bad. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life. The next few days were horrible for Kevin. After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a Pepsi bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling Pepsi all over the painting and totally ruining it. The next day was even worse. Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes. One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.” This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

A week later, the mayor of Arvada received a package of beautifully sliced tomatoes. He took them straight to his pig, which ate them right up.
