In the Eustis High School, Lauren Levingston sits in a

dark classroom during her lunch hour. She was looking

at the computer screen in front of her as she edits*

videos. A few years ago, she didn’t know much about

film, said the 17-year-old from Florida, US. But now, she

and 10 of her classmates are able to write, film, edit and

produce their own TV program that airs on the local TV

channel, Lakefront TV . The students learned these skills

through the school’s TV production course.

Many schools have TV production courses, but most of the time, the programs they produce

are only showed inside the school. The students in the tea cher Michael Ligler’s class, however,

are creating a program for the whole county* to watch.

The program, called What’s New in the 352, presents what it’s like to live in Lake County –

area number 352 – as a young person. It includes mini shows like Taking It to the Streets , during

which students show a historical place in the county, and Redneck Tech , a do-it-yourself

technology lesson. The program airs the first Saturday of every month.

Ligler said the experience makes students work faster and film with higher quality*. They’re

always working on their program – during lunch, after school, and on the weekends.

“It’s really changed their mentality * and made it something that hopefully they’ll really start to

use later in life,” Ligler said.

Anna Mar ie Chwastiak, Lakefront TV’s production manager, said she chose the students

because she wanted to show that “there are a lot of young people in the county”. She says they’ve

come up to her expectations*.

Student Alex Benson, 18, said he enjoys the chance to show off his community*. “You don’t

get to see things through a high schooler’s thought ,” said Benson. “It’s from us, and it’s a great

chance for the school. Our thinking is that the older community would really enjoy seeing kids’

thoughts.”

One day a man saw an old lady standing by her expensive car, clearly in need of help. So he
