Guided Discussion 2

World English 2 Units 9-10

Focus Listening & Speaking Book 2 Units 3-4

Instruction:

-Form groups of 4 to 5 and choose a suitable topic for your group from below.

-Then select one of your group members to be the group leader; he/she should be able to lead the preparation of your presentation and make decisions.

-Then select one of your group members to be the secretary; he/she should keep the preparation and presentation of your topic organised, for example by taking down notes.

-Each group will have 5-10 minutes for preparation and 3-5 minutes for presentation.

?Note that all group members must speak during the presentation.

?Unless your topic requires a specific format, presentations may be as creative as you like including role play or a short skit such as a news bulletin.

?Group members should work closely together for the highest possible marks. Any group member who is not present or who does not speak will not receive marks. If there are questions asked by the floor/the teacher any group member can answer them. By doing so, the group may get higher marks.

?Marks will be given for content, fluency, pronunciation, grammar accuracy, and vocabulary range.

?Additional marks will be given to groups that ask relevant questions after a given presentation at the discretion of the teacher.

Topic 1: Life in the Past

(Please see Unit 9 in your World English 2 textbook)

You may want to use the following words and phrases in your discussion:

Make a comparison of your life now and the life of your grandparents. .The following questions will help you prepare:

1)What tools and conveniences do you have now that your grandparents didn’t?

2)Is life harder for young people now than it was when your grandparents were your age?

How?

3)What did your grandparents do for entertainment?

4)How has the environment changed from the time your grandparents grew up until

present day?

5)Is life better for you than it was for your grandparents? Why?

6)Would you like to experience life in the past?

Your group is to make a role play about traveling abroad. Y ou must decide where you are going and for what purpose (touring, study, etc.). The following questions can help you prepare:

1)What do you need to bring?

2)How will your travel and how long will you stay?

3)What is your itinerary?

4)How will you purchase tickets?

5)What accommodations will you use?

6)What do you expect to see and experience while traveling abroad?

Topic 3: Giving Advice

(Please see Units 3-4 in your College English 2 Focus Listening and Speaking textbook) You may want to use the following words and phrases in your discussion:

Create a role play or presentation in which your group offers two pieces of advice about one common situation college students face. Use the following questions to help you prepare:

1)What would you do in a similar situation?

2)What would be the worst thing to do? Why?

3)What makes one opinion better than another opinion?

4)What are the possible outcomes of accepting one piece of advice versus another?

5)Is it always good to seek advice from others? Why?
