The first time I saw Kai, she was sitting in my front yard, hugging my dog Harley. She and her husband Sean had just moved into a small house down the road from us. I think she was drawn to Harley’s friendliness, just as he was drawn to hers. From the moment I talked to her, I knew Kai would be a friendly friend. Her smile and good cheer made me feel better just being around her.

It didn’t take long before Kai was beloved by everyone in our neighborhood. Children and adults visited her home often. Although she already had four cats, she also adopted(收养)a homeless dog.

When we visited her, she would kindly listen to all of our trouble and then say something so wise that we would leave her home with our hearts singing. Sometimes I would read her my stories and she would always encourage me to keep writing.

All of this time, though, Kai was slowly dying from cancer. But she lived each day with such cheer that I often forgot just how ill she was. Still, she died on a cold winter day with heavy snow falling down.

I’d not heard of the word “slashie” (斜杠青年)until a couple of days ago. It’s really funny how new words go mainstream(主流). But, well, every day is a school day.

We all know slash is “/”, so a slashie means a person with more than one job. Some people think slashies are those who cannot find a full-time job, or people who are lazy and don’t want to work full time. I disagree. As long as t he young would like to try, there are plenty of full-time jobs there. And some slashies actually work even longer hours and have to be on call during weekends. Then why are people becoming slashies?

The trouble with working in a single job is that the security(保障) of that job is unsure. It is less possible for slashies to see all jobs gone at the same time.

Some slashies work more than one job because they need money, but many appear to be doing so for more creative reasons. They can test a new idea without jumping straight into it and taking the full risk. They are more experienced and prefer to try something new.

Besides, they won’t do anything long enough to get bored with it. Sally Gray is a so-called slashie. She says, “With lots of different jobs, I have to stop thinking about what I was doing and what problems I had, because I am getting paid to do something else.”

A. want to test a new idea

B. would like to be more creative

C. they need money badly

D. won’t lose all jobs in one go

( ) 59. Sally Gray isn’t bored with her work because she .

A. is busy with many jobs

B. is experienced in her job

C. spends time on one job

D. has no problems with her jobs

( ) 60. The purpose of this passage is to .

A. introduce a new lifestyle

B. ask people not to be bored with jobs

C. tell people how to find a new job

D. show how to get skills from work

D

The world is a greener place today than it was 20 years ago. How does this happen? Well, it appears China is leading the change. The tree-planting programs in China have made huge contributions to the global greening.

Taking a bus or subway, making payments online, or just walking---these daily activities can help turn China's deserts into forests if you are using Ant Forest. It was launched by Ant Financial Services Group.

Ant Forest is a feature in the Alipay mobile payment app. It records users’ low-carbon activities ---taking a bus to work instead of driving, for example ---and gives users “green energy” when the users’ green energy gets high enough. Ant Forest and its partners will plant a real tree for the user.

Ant Forest recently received the 2019 Champions of the Ear th award, the UN’s highest environmental honor, for encouraging people to live greener lifestyles and protect the environment.

About half a billion people have used Ant Forest since it came out in August 2016. Ant Forest and its partners have planted about 122 million trees in China’s driest areas, including parts of Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai and Shanxi. The trees cover a total area of 112,000 hectares( 公顷). This makes Ant Forest China's largest tree-planting project started by a private( 私人的) company. Ant Forest shows us how we can use technology to solve environmental problems.

This is only part of China's efforts to make Earth greener. In 1978, China began a national-level forestation project----the "Great Green Wall". The program has seen trees planted in northern China to act as windbreaks( 防风林). China is one of the most successful countries in greening the desert and has lessons to share with the world.

Do you ever hope to have a chair right for you when standing for too long? 66 The different chair was made in a company in Switzerland. The company’s boss Keith Gunura said the idea came from his work experience when he was young. 67 The place was not big enough for all the workers to sit on chairs, and it was tiring for him to stand for several hours at a time. 68 Then the Chairless Chair came out.

As its name implied, it doesn’t look like a chair at all. 69 When you want to sit down, just push a button, and it will move and work like a chair. The Chairless Chair is only two kilograms, so it doesn’t make you feel anything different.

The Chairless Chair definitely moves more easily than a traditional folding chair.

70 Most of them are the people who need to stand at work for a long time.

A.With a belt, it can be tied along your body.

B.Well, a special chair has come to the world.

C.At that time, Keith worked in a packing factory.

VIII.书面表达

Recently recycling textbooks has been put into practice in some provinces in

China. As far as I am concerned it is a good way which will benefit both society and us students.

For one thing it is good news to students from poor families who can’t afford textbooks. For another recycling textbooks can save natural resources. We are cutting down too many trees every day. In the long run it helps develop the students’ environmental awareness. What’s more students may learn to share and work with others through recycling textbooks.

To sum up, I consider recycling textbooks useful and helpful. And I still hope students shouldn’t damage their textbooks and keep them clean for the benefit of the next student to use them.
